Expertly designed by renowned studio Atelier Hsu, its open, industrial-style featuring exposed steel beams and reclaimed redwood furniture instantly reflects its Silicon Valley surroundings. It doesn’t take a genius though to see this home is pretty special. The living room’s huge glass doors give way to a sun-soaked patio while just inside, a large dining table is perfectly positioned for semi-al fresco dining. An eye-catching iron staircase leads upstairs to the bedrooms, both boasting their own freestanding bathtubs in their respectively luxurious bathrooms. Wander down to the large, white kitchen to cook up a Cali-fresh meal, or head out to explore Mountain View’s downtown bars and restaurants just under a mile away. While the area is known for its many cycling and walking paths, you can also easily explore further afield. San Francisco is just a forty-minute drive away or a short train ride from Mountain View station, just ten minutes down the road.

This home might be close to Stanford University, but it's a million miles away from your average student house. In fact, parts of it feel more like a learned professor's seminar room, from the shelves packed full of books and the grand piano, to the historic paintings hanging on the walls. There are a couple of desks if you need to study, as well as a few nooks nestled below the window or a roaring fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs for any late-night philosophical conversations. With its large windows, there’s plenty of California sun that pours in creating a dazzling effect against the neutral decor that’s sprinkled with reclaimed wood. There's a harmony here between the natural world and modern sophistication to create a home that is as sleek as it is serene. This Victorian-style home caught our eye for its great location in the heart of Noe Valley. San Francisco’s iconic cable car runs just in front of the building to whisk you away to all the famous tourist spots, and you’ve got 24th Street, with its bakeries, cafes, and cheese and wine shops, on your doorstep. And when you’re not busy sightseeing, you can relax on the private, sunny balcony or enjoy a meal around the ten-seater dining table. While babies and teenagers are welcome here, the home isn’t suitable for children aged 2 to 12.

With its multiple terraces and separate one bedroom casita, this home is just the ticket for a group of friends or multi-generational family wanting their own space. If you fancy venturing out, Downtown Sonoma is around a 5-minute drive away, but we really wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to step a foot away from this truly magical place.

Surrounded by hiking trails, golf courses, and stretches of Pacific coast, this home in Santa Cruz not only has an enviable location, but it’s bursting with the potential for plenty of memories made. The backyard, alone, has a private swimming pool, tiki bar, and a swath of green turf that the kids will love running around on – especially when they’re hiding from the dinosaur. Now, although their ancestor is just a statue, the chickens are very real – find them in their coop when you’re making the rounds outdoors. Pass through trees, make your way up and down steps as you stretch out and shake off the last dregs of sleep, and refresh yourself with a morning swim before going back inside to brew a pot of fresh coffee.

Just outside of the village of Calistoga in the northernmost tip of the Napa Valley, you'll encounter this rustic yet refined retreat surrounded by acres of verdant vineyards and lush gardens. With no nearby neighbours, enjoy that all-too-rare feeling of seclusion, yet the convenience of only being a mile and a half from downtown Calistoga. The estate is divided across three adjacent villas – which helps maintain privacy for large family get-togethers and groups of friends – while there's a yurt on the grounds that makes for an adventurous option for the kids. Everything here is set up for outdoor living. There are no fewer than twelve sets of French doors leading out onto ~1,000 sq ft of balconies and ~2,000 sq ft of patio space. The large outdoor gazebo boasts a full outdoor kitchen with a serious gas barbecue and alfresco dining area overlooking the stunning pool and Jacuzzi area. In addition to the usual high-end outdoor amenities, you'll also find professional-standard courts for sand volleyball, bocce ball and tennis. We sense a bit of friendly competition. Take a peek inside the barn, and you'll find a private games room with a pool table, ping pong, air hockey, and dartboard and a large rose garden adjacent to the villa, which provides fresh roses daily.

Nestled in the city of Roseville, California, this modern home is great for friends and families. Well-behaved pets are welcome for an additional fee, and your host can provide a cot and safety equipment for little ones. You'll find a gym, shops, and Blue Oaks Park within walking distance. That said, we recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay here – it's less than an hour's drive to Sacramento, and a couple of hours into San Francisco for day trips.
