You’ll be within easy reach of all of the area’s best haunts, with its trendy coffee shops and restaurants, while at the same time enjoying the complete tranquillity of the secluded street.

The house itself is a beautiful reflection of its setting – a spacious and light-filled interior, with plenty of comfy lounging space to relax in. We love the simple yet stylish décor, with mid-century inspired furnishings and gorgeous pieces – we particularly favour the lamps and light fixtures – and the glossy, wooden floors, giving the whole place a homey, instantly welcoming feel. The bedrooms invite you in, with the plush, comfortable beds, while both bathrooms offer a touch of sparkling luxury. 

You’ll also have your own garden, perfect for relaxed drinks and light suppers, with the golden hour of the California sunset as your backdrop. This is the famous LA magic at its best.

If houses could talk, this home would definitely have a tale or two to share. Built in 1915, it was a swinging speakeasy during Prohibition times; it housed lions, giant tortoises and great apes in the ‘50s and it has since been home to an assortment of writers, directors and producers. While the neighbourhood kids aren’t riding around on lions’ backs in the garden anymore, you still get some wildlife action with the birdhouse in the backyard. Inside the home, you’ll find a bright, elegant living room featuring French country decor – the plump sofas and elegant dining table are perfect for hosting sophisticated soirees. After waking up in the cosy bedroom, head out to explore the nearby sights including Santa Monica Pier and Venice, or drive twenty minutes inland to experience the buzz of Beverly Hills. This classic Venice bungalow is all about those Californian good vibes. Dating back to the 1920s the home echoes the bohemian nature of the neighbourhood, with an authentic, laid-back feel and an eclectic mix of vintage furniture. Inside, there are period features like the pretty arched window and the wood floor, along with a fully equipped kitchen and two bedrooms. But it's the garden that's the real selling point here. Green, secluded and quirky in its own uniquely Venice way, it's a place to escape with your friends and family. Eat at the outdoor dining table, light the fire pit and sit out under the string lights at night. Even though this home has a bit of a New England feel to it, once you step outside, you will be in no doubt that it's in Santa Monica. It’s on a hidden walkway off the main road — which gives it a sense of privacy — and the beach is only two minutes' walk away. The Pier and Muscle Beach only takes ten on foot, too. Back inside, the interior has been designed to feel beachy but in a way you’d associate more with the East Coast — think vaulted ceilings, fireplaces and soft pastels. The huge kitchen will be a highlight for those with culinary talents and if the weather's nice — which we're going to wager it will be — you can serve up dinner outside on the private patio. Better still, there's a barbecue for grilling up some meaty flavours to grateful guests.

Ten blocks from white sandy beaches, or a short stroll away from the Venice Boardwalk, you'll never be short of activities at this Santa Monica home. Your attentive hosts have provided all the beach basics too – bags, chairs and beach towels. There’s a zen calm to the home, where a Baddha stands in prayer and sprouting grass adds a touch of natural green to the living room. Though you’re on the edge of the city here, big windows show off a view of trees. There’s a quiet little roof terrace, where greenery creeps over the wall and two comfy chairs provide the perfect cocktail spot. Up the spiral staircase, both bedrooms are decorated in the ink-black and parchment white of Japanese zen and the master has a desk in the sunny window.

This Venice home is an absolute delight. The proportions and layout are lovely, it's flooded with natural light, has great eco-credentials and it has a private and peaceful outdoor space. Stylishly decorated with a mid-century modern feel, and just a five-minute drive away from the beach, this place is pretty easy to love. Its recent redesign has made it sustainable – there's solar power and an osmosis water filtration system – and created a guesthouse we'd be thrilled to call home for a while. Sit in front of the gas flame fireplace, rustle up a meal in the kitchen (it's a bit retro but we love it) and sit out under the stars in your pretty garden – the soothing sound of the water feature will soon have you ready for bed. Just a short drive or a thirty-minute walk from the beach, you'll probably be heading down there most days. Santa Monica is very close by and it's just a twenty-five-minute drive from Hollywood. You'll also be able to stroll to some of the best bars and restaurants in LA on Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Rose Avenue.

This warm and inviting home is a clean and unfussy space perfect for anyone dreaming of unwinding in peace in the hot Californian sun. The roomy patio has a choice of seating options, and we loved the array of potted plants, bringing a welcoming, relaxed feeling that totally fits the setting. The local park is just down the road and is any sport or activity lover's dream, complete with tennis and basketball courts and a baseball field. Unlike other LA neighbourhoods, this one is very walkable, and you can be at Lincoln Boulevard in twelve minutes on foot or six minutes by bike. While many visitors' first thought is a beachfront location, this home is a much better bet for those looking to travel further afield. You can easily explore the rest of LA without getting snarled up in Venice's infamous traffic, and you're still less than two miles to the beach. Meanwhile, those looking for delicious food and independent boutiques will be pleased to learn that Abbott Kinney Boulevard and Rose Ave are even closer.

We fell in love with this home based on the location alone, even before crossing the threshold. Just a stone's throw from the beach, you can easily jump in the ocean before breakfast. You're conveniently located just one block from Main St, where you'll find indie boutiques, charming cafes and Michelin-recognised restaurants. The home itself is equally breathtaking – we adore the double-height living space with a sea view. It's exceptionally stylish, brimming with character. The amount of art hanging on the walls would put some galleries to shame. It's definitely a home that makes you want to know its owners – a truly unique place to stay and one that's ready for its Instagram close-up.

This apartment manages to tactfully combine both aesthetics to create a bohemian vibe that fits right in with its creative and all-inclusive surroundings. And should you stay here, you'll certainly appreciate the 10ft-high ceilings, open floor plan, and shared outdoor garden space – complete with a hammock, outdoor seating and fire pit for atmospheric alfresco evenings. The quiet residential street is great for a restful night's sleep. However, you're close to the heart of the action – the many restaurants and cafes of Rose Ave, as well as the iconic Venice Beach Boardwalk are just a short stroll away.

We know where we'd rather spend our time. Located on a quiet street in Venice, you're removed from the buzz but plenty close to the action. So, while the cute kitchen contains everything you'd need, there are so many culinary choices nearby, it's tempting to let someone else take care of the cooking – you're on holiday, after all. This is the ultimate relaxing getaway.

Palm Breeze has been designed in a wonderfully coherent manner, and clearly, with its eco-credentials in mind – there are solar panels on the roof, and the water is heated with geothermal energy. The immediate surrounding part of Venice is very walkable, and the beach is about a twenty-minute walk away (or five minutes in the car).

This fabulously soulful studio apartment won us over the minute we crossed the threshold. It feels fresh and modern inside, packed with character, and has a delightful jungle garden. We love the reclaimed wood sliding doors that separate the calming bedroom from the rest of the living space. The creative, self-build spirit of the doors continues in the shared outdoor space, with its use of corrugated steel panels to divide the area, homemade garden furniture and even an artist studio caravan. Exploring the neighbourhood on foot couldn't be easier – it's a mere fifteen-minute amble to the beach and even closer to Abbott Kinney Boulevard, with all its hip shops and eateries, while there are bikes for you to explore further. So, while it's true that Venice is undergoing a bit of a transformation, your hosts are striving to keep Venice weird!

Here, they've repurposed corrugated steel panels to divide the space, built homemade garden furniture and even managed to fit in an artist studio caravan. There's even a fire pit for cosy evenings. The standout feature has got to be its proximity to gorgeous Venice Beach, an easy fifteen-minute amble away. Surf's up, so what are you waiting for!



Time To Surf

This Brentwood penthouse is only a ten-minute drive from the beach yet foregoes the boho beach vibe favouring something that wouldn't look out of place in the mega-mansions that dot the neighbourhood. For us, the highlight is the maximalist dining space with deep teal walls and statement lighting. Kick back on the sofa with a copy of the LA Times and a coffee in hand before heading out to start the day. Brentwood's A-list inhabitants value their privacy, so the tree-lined boulevards aren't the busiest. However, you've not had an authentic Brentwood experience until you've headed out on an early morning hike and bumped into the likes of Gwyneth or Arnie. The location provides excellent access to the restaurants, bars and shopping of San Vicente while still possessing some quieter charms, making it all the better for getting a good night’s sleep in one of the penthouse’s pastel-accented bedrooms.
