Back home, explore the nooks and crannies on each floor before curling up with a book by the living room fireplace. Lie on the plump sofas and make use of the large bathtubs to unwind after a day of skiing. The kitchen is modern and stylish, while the terrace is the perfect spot for lunch.

Nestled on a five-acre estate, this custom-built home received the Outdoor Living Award from Tahoe Quarterly Magazine – and we can see why. As you arrive at the property, take a moment to breathe in the fresh pine-scented air while taking in the breathtaking views over the abundance of nature. 

With two levels of outdoor living areas, you can lap up the views from different angles without leaving the great outdoors. Enjoy blissful homemade meals and barbecues on the terrace featuring an alfresco dining area before watching the sunset from the hot tub. You'll find further entertainment amenities on the second terrace, including a ping pong table and enough space to practice yoga at sunrise. 

In the backyard, warm up around the fire pit as night falls, and make the most of the solid stone loungers during the daytime of the warmer months spent here. There's just as much leisure space inside as outside; as in the open plan living area and kitchen, stretch out wherever you find comfy amidst the cosy and contemporary interiors with a glass of California wine in hand. We bet the floor-to-ceiling fireplace will keep you feeling warm and fuzzy after a day of discovering the Truckee and Lake Tahoe area.

In the business hub of Fair Oaks, near the Facebook HQ, this flash apartment sits in a building filled with amenities. If you’re not hitting the building’s private gym, perhaps take a jog through Bedwell Bayfront Park, a five-minute walk away. For a day out in the city, San Francisco is just a half-hour drive away (or fifty minutes on the train from Redwood). 

Apart from a private gym, the building is also home to a huge outdoor swimming pool, surrounded by outdoor lounges with fire pits for cool evenings. There are myriad cafés and lounges inside, and a plush barbecue area outside on the deck too. The apartment itself is big and bright, with modern artworks popping against gallery-white walls. The living room is made for unwinding, but there’s also a laptop-friendly desk should you need to work remotely. The full kitchen is crowned with a sleek, white breakfast bar, providing plenty of space to prep meals.

On the outskirts of Truckee, and right by Donner Lake (Tahoe’s smaller, less crowded cousin), Sugar Pine has every base covered to make for a great outdoors holiday. Along with the sheer size, which makes it excellent for larger groups and multiple families, the home has pretty much every amenity you can think of, from the private spa (with sauna and steam room), two barbecues, enormous TVs, a games room, and even underfloor heating (a game-changer after skiing, trust us). These all make it seem like an oasis in itself, so the fact that you have vast numbers of outdoor activities on your doorstep – from skiing to hiking, boating, golf, and more – leaves you spoiled for choice.

Across the complex, there are plenty of seating areas where those working remotely can knuckle down to concentrate, or perhaps the living room of your apartment is better suited if you need your own quiet space?

Whether you decide to visit in the summer or the winter, this area has plenty to offer to make it magical all year long. The open-plan living area is the home’s main social hub, perfect for chit-chatting while someone prepares dinner, heated debates around the large dining table, or family games in front of the roaring fire. Then step outside and admire the wonderful views from the back deck. From here, you can also spot the sixteenth-hole of the Tahoe Donner Golf Course, which is surely worth a visit if you enjoy the game of golf. Spend your days swimming in any of the area’s magical lakes, enjoy exclusive skiing in colder months or just hang back at the home and relax with a great book and even better company. However you choose to spend your time here, you’ll be glad to soak your tired muscles in the outdoor hot tub at the end of a long day.

With the magic of the sea, sun, and stars surrounding you at Half Moon Bay, this incredible home is the perfect weekend retreat for a family, only twenty minutes away from San Fransisco. Charge the Tesla at the EV charging station and then explore the trails of the National Forest backing the house or pack your beach bag and stop by the Pacific Ocean, a fifteen-minute stroll away. Sip on sundowners whilst soaking in the hot tub and watch the sunset over the ocean. As the stars speckle the sky, light the fire pit to keep the night going. Kids will be thrilled with the tree-house style bunk beds, a playroom packed with laser tag and a mountain of lego, the big screen projector in the den and the virtual reality set-up. Outside, this place has the wood-tiled cladding and white bannisters of a traditional Bay Area home, but the curved wall of windows in the double-height living room creates a modern feel. A chef’s kitchen comes equipped with more than you need for self-catering – there’s a chef’s torch for those who fancy whipping up a creme brulee – and a collection of spices, oils and condiments are yours to use. Should you need to catch up on some work, there are a plethora of modern office spaces tucked away too.

Overlooking beautiful Donner Lake, which sits on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, guests will find a home that will perfectly suit a small family.  The first bedroom has a king-size bed, while bedroom two is made up of a queen-size bunk bed. More importantly, guests have easy access to the lake so make sure to pack your swimsuits and any floating devices. Wander around the edge of the lake and you'll come across charming cafes, restaurants and shops. We would, however, still recommend having a car in order to explore all this area has to offer.

Homes don't come much more in tune with nature than this one. Situated just below South Lake Tahoe, you'll feel truly immersed in the natural environment. From waking up to views of beautiful pine trees and the peaceful sounds of birds chirping to feeling like you're staying in a luxurious treehouse fortress no matter what room you're in.

Located in the quiet area of Meyers, just outside of Echo Lake, in the summer months you’ll be spoilt for choice with hiking trails and swimming opportunities in the lakes (Echo Lake is a sixteen-minute drive, while Lake Tahoe is twenty-four minutes away). In winter, you can make the most of backcountry skiing and snowboarding before retiring home to heat up in front of the roaring fire with a hot chocolate. Guests lucky enough to occupy the master bedroom can even treat themselves to a relaxing soak in the jetted tub!

Tucked away in a wooded spot on Howell Mountain, well-known for its award-winning vineyards, this European-inspired home has more than a touch of the grand chateau about it. From the imposing front door, right through to its luxurious master suite and its sociable outdoor space, it's a French fantasy suited to both family getaways and groups of friends here on a wine tour. 

Here you'll be able to reconnect with nature and enjoy the rustic scenery – all the while living like royalty. The home is packed with character, with vaulted ceilings, timber beams and plush furnishings. Light the fire in the living room on cool evenings, or sit outside as the stars fill the sky on summer nights. The town is less than five minutes away by car, with fifteen minutes to St Helena and Calistoga, and you're surrounded by the area's finest wineries – just take your pick and experience the views, the atmosphere and of course taste the wines produced in this special spot.

This lovely home can be found at the heart of Napa Valley, just 8 miles from St Helena and its fabulous wineries. Ideal for families as well as groups of friends, this home is just two blocks away from the shops and restaurants on Main Street, making it a convenient base. We love the sunny garden, private pool, and hot tub. There are great options for dining inside or out, and your host can book you a private chef if you really want to push the boat out.

City life feels like a distant memory from the moment you walk into this beautiful Californian home. Ideal for two couples, or individuals, the house is set across two levels, with a large, terraced garden and several decks with views across the majestic Sonoma Mountains. Outdoor living is a way of life here, with an open-air spa-style shower, outdoor grill for those balmy evenings, and plenty of seating on the decks for relaxing with a book or soaking up the afternoon sun. Inside, you'll be greeted by a grand living room furnished with elegant yet comfortable antique furniture. The adjacent dining room features a lavish 1930s chandelier above the mahogany table which opens up to seat six. Vintage vibes continue through to the well-equipped kitchen and the characterful bedrooms, where a combination of floral and maritime themes add some old-world charm.

Outside, why not catch some sun in the shared organic garden planted with a variety of native plants and fruit trees, before taking a stroll along the tree-lined street to the shops and restaurants of 24th Street, just a block away. Regarded as the heart of Noe Valley, 24th Street has an abundance of boutiques, salons, coffee houses, bars, and restaurants. This Victorian-style home caught our eye for its great location in the heart of Noe Valley. San Francisco’s iconic cable car runs just in front of the building to whisk you away to all the famous tourist spots, and you’ve got 24th Street, with its bakeries, cafes, and cheese and wine shops, on your doorstep. And when you’re not busy sightseeing, you can relax on the private, sunny balcony or enjoy a meal around the ten-seater dining table. While babies and teenagers are welcome here, the home isn’t suitable for children aged 2 to 12.

Nestled in the city of Roseville, California, this modern home is great for friends and families. Well-behaved pets are welcome for an additional fee, and your host can provide a cot and safety equipment for little ones. You'll find a gym, shops, and Blue Oaks Park within walking distance. That said, we recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay here – it's less than an hour's drive to Sacramento, and a couple of hours into San Francisco for day trips.
