This lovingly restored 1940s retreat has been a family home for almost three decades. Packed with intriguing artefacts from around the world, every inch is bursting with character and charm. The owner is also an interior designer and sculptor – make sure to play a tune on the upright piano, which is a relic from her childhood. Each bedroom is cosy and well-sized (particularly the main suite), while the many lounges – including an office space – ensure there's a quiet spot for everyone. We're also big fans of tropical terraces and patios. With Manhattan Beach and the Strand both within easy walking distance, it's no surprise we fell hook, line, and sinker.

A sensational property located directly on Manhattan Beach, this head-turning home is a designer's dream. The cutting-edge glass exterior contrasts nicely with the wood and stone elements inside, which serve to connect you to the natural beauty on show through the double-height floor-to-ceiling windows. The secluded bedrooms allow for a certain amount of privacy. However, it's worth noting that the third bedroom is accessed through a hatch in the ceiling of the second – which certainly makes the prospect of going to bed a lot more exciting for the kids. The communal areas are inviting and cosy and do everything possible to orientate you towards those incredible vistas. So grab a glass of wine and watch the waves roll in as the setting sun reflects off your sleek beach house.

You’ll be within easy reach of all of the area’s best haunts, with its trendy coffee shops and restaurants, while at the same time enjoying the complete tranquillity of the secluded street.

The house itself is a beautiful reflection of its setting – a spacious and light-filled interior, with plenty of comfy lounging space to relax in. We love the simple yet stylish décor, with mid-century inspired furnishings and gorgeous pieces – we particularly favour the lamps and light fixtures – and the glossy, wooden floors, giving the whole place a homey, instantly welcoming feel. The bedrooms invite you in, with the plush, comfortable beds, while both bathrooms offer a touch of sparkling luxury. 

You’ll also have your own garden, perfect for relaxed drinks and light suppers, with the golden hour of the California sunset as your backdrop. This is the famous LA magic at its best.

There’s an art to California living and this home may be the perfect spot to master it. Just three short blocks from the ocean in Manhattan Beach, its sophisticated beach-vibe styling is fresh and comfortable, and there are two balconies to take in the salty sea air. Exposed brickwork and mid-century modern furnishings set the tone in the open-plan living area and kitchen, and just out on the little balcony, there's a grill so you can cook outdoors on fine days. Follow the light up another flight of stairs to the master bedroom and you’ll discover the real heart of the home. A canvas of blue will hold your gaze as you stare out onto panoramic views of the ocean and coastline (hello Catalina Island). With its reclaimed wood floors, vaulted ceilings and soft tones, it's a stylish space made all the more inviting by its lounge area and luxury bathroom. Step outside and this balcony was made for peaceful morning coffees. Nearby, there are plenty of dining options on your doorstep, and from here it's easy to rent bikes and cruise the oceanfront bicycle path that stretches for miles. An evening walk on the strand after dinner is sure to be a memorable experience, just be sure to make it back in time to watch the sunset from your balcony.

There are so many fantastic, shared amenities to mention at this home’s 100-plus acre oceanfront resort, that we could be here for some time. Facilities include several pools, a spa and fitness centre, beach access, a golf course and more (fees apply). What about the villa itself? We love the private patio overlooking the ocean and golf course and you’ll also find a hot tub too. A couple of things to mention – one bedroom can only be accessed via the courtyard. And at full capacity, two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the family room. The location, we have to say, is great – Los Angeles and many other attractions are within driving distance.

Soaring ceilings and sophisticated amenities await at this home in Venice Beach. It's the perfect location, a twenty-minute walk from the boardwalk and beach. There isn't a pool here, but the roof terrace makes up for that. You can unwind with a glass of wine, gather by the fire, and strike up the barbecue for an alfresco meal as the sun goes down. Indoors, you'll find three floors of living space. The main suite is on the top floor, with a soaking tub for extra relaxation. That's all our boxes ticked.

This classic Venice bungalow is all about those Californian good vibes. Dating back to the 1920s the home echoes the bohemian nature of the neighbourhood, with an authentic, laid-back feel and an eclectic mix of vintage furniture. Inside, there are period features like the pretty arched window and the wood floor, along with a fully equipped kitchen and two bedrooms. But it's the garden that's the real selling point here. Green, secluded and quirky in its own uniquely Venice way, it's a place to escape with your friends and family. Eat at the outdoor dining table, light the fire pit and sit out under the string lights at night. In the morning, grab one of the home's bikes and cycle down to the beach, or bring your boards and head out for a day surfing. A converted garage provides an extra studio bedroom for two in the garden, which can be rented along with the main house. A half-hour stroll from Abbot Kinney Boulevard and all its shops, restaurants and galleries, there’s always something to do in this buzzing part of LA.

Sway with the breeze on the hanging couch or unwind in the private hot tub. If you’d like to stretch your legs, you’ll find the fashionable Abbot Kinney Boulevard a twelve-minute walk away. This warm and inviting home is a clean and unfussy space perfect for anyone dreaming of unwinding in peace in the hot Californian sun. The roomy patio has a choice of seating options, and we loved the array of potted plants, bringing a welcoming, relaxed feeling that totally fits the setting. The local park is just down the road and is any sport or activity lover's dream, complete with tennis and basketball courts and a baseball field. Unlike other LA neighbourhoods, this one is very walkable, and you can be at Lincoln Boulevard in twelve minutes on foot or six minutes by bike. While many visitors' first thought is a beachfront location, this home is a much better bet for those looking to travel further afield. You can easily explore the rest of LA without getting snarled up in Venice's infamous traffic, and you're still less than two miles to the beach. Meanwhile, those looking for delicious food and independent boutiques will be pleased to learn that Abbott Kinney Boulevard and Rose Ave are even closer.

If houses could talk, this home would definitely have a tale or two to share. Built in 1915, it was a swinging speakeasy during Prohibition times; it housed lions, giant tortoises and great apes in the ‘50s and it has since been home to an assortment of writers, directors and producers. While the neighbourhood kids aren’t riding around on lions’ backs in the garden anymore, you still get some wildlife action with the birdhouse in the backyard. Inside the home, you’ll find a bright, elegant living room featuring French country decor – the plump sofas and elegant dining table are perfect for hosting sophisticated soirees. After waking up in the cosy bedroom, head out to explore the nearby sights including Santa Monica Pier and Venice, or drive twenty minutes inland to experience the buzz of Beverly Hills. After a day of hiking or soaking up the sea air, come back home for drinks in the courtyard before heading out to enjoy Venice’s vibrant food scene. 


The Birdhouse

Sweeping views await at this penthouse apartment. It's perched right by the water in Marina Del Rey, and thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass walls, you'll be treated to non-stop ocean vistas no matter the time of day. A private balcony is ideal for alfresco sundowners and watching the hustle and bustle of the marina. Head inside, and you can lounge in the bright living area or gaze further afield with the telescope. There are a few quirks here, though. The main bedroom is open to the living space below, and the blinds don't block out the sunlight. But, with Venice Beach a five-minute drive away and panoramas aplenty, it's an excellent option for a getaway on the coast.

Ten blocks from white sandy beaches, or a short stroll away from the Venice Boardwalk, you'll never be short of activities at this Santa Monica home. Your attentive hosts have provided all the beach basics too – bags, chairs and beach towels. There’s a zen calm to the home, where a Baddha stands in prayer and sprouting grass adds a touch of natural green to the living room. Though you’re on the edge of the city here, big windows show off a view of trees. There’s a quiet little roof terrace, where greenery creeps over the wall and two comfy chairs provide the perfect cocktail spot. Up the spiral staircase, both bedrooms are decorated in the ink-black and parchment white of Japanese zen and the master has a desk in the sunny window.

A contemporary home with a seventies soul, this house just fifteen minutes from Venice Beach presents a stylish space to kick back in between exploring the sights of both Los Angeles and Santa Monica.

It's this leafy green setting that we particularly love about this home, where you'll find citrus trees, a swaying hammock and a laid-back lounge area – perfect for chilling out with a glass of Californian wine in hand. With a barbecue, fire pit and ping pong table to enjoy, you could easily spend long summer evenings in this haven of peace. 

If you do feel like venturing out, drive down to Venice beach to catch the sunset and a bite to eat, or better still, why not explore Santa Monica on two wheels? There's plenty of bike storage space if you decide to rent or bring your own bikes here. 




Seventies Soul 

We do love a home with character, and this place has it in spades. Tucked away in its own gated compound, surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, this eclectic gem is a timeless work of art. Boho-luxe styling, colourful fabrics, bold artwork, vintage furniture – you name it, it's here. Inside, we're talking big squishy sofas, countless armchairs and rustic dining tables, with bags of space to entertain your guests, while a separate office, dedicated library and multiple nooks allow you to easily slip off for some peace and quiet. But this place really comes into its own outdoors. Imagine serving up alfresco meals on the candle-lit terrace, sipping cocktails around the 15ft outdoor fireplace or leafing through a book on a garden sofa, surrounded by tropical plants. The real surprise is that here you’re actually bang in the middle of bustling Venice, with the iconic boardwalk, beach and eateries all within easy walking distance.

This wonderful home is in the highly sought-after neighbourhood of Silver Strand, just a few steps from Grand Canal Esplanade and its beaches. High ceilings and huge windows fill the home with light, while fireplaces keep things cosy after dark. We love the rooftop terrace with mountain views, as well as the balcony that looks out over the patio and gardens. Your host can help arrange spa treatments and private chefs to make your stay all the more special.

Bearcat was born in the roaring twenties but has been carefully reimagined as a modern living arrangement. Some parts of the original setup have survived, like the study with a lovely view of the surroundings – with a typewriter to inspire your creative side – and the occasional retro-futuristic hints. This is a bright home with an atypical layout which means each room has its own character, but the whole look is neatly tied together. Bearcat is a great home for those on their first trip to Los Angeles and we recommend starting your day on the balcony, watching the city wake up over a nice cup of coffee. Avoid the rush hour and drive to Downtown LA a little later, soaking in the sights and exploring the culinary scene. In the evening, return to your not-so-humble abode and relax in the lounge while watching a classic Hollywood movie.

Even though this home has a bit of a New England feel to it, once you step outside, you will be in no doubt that it's in Santa Monica. It’s on a hidden walkway off the main road — which gives it a sense of privacy — and the beach is only two minutes' walk away. The Pier and Muscle Beach only takes ten on foot, too. Back inside, the interior has been designed to feel beachy but in a way you’d associate more with the East Coast — think vaulted ceilings, fireplaces and soft pastels. The huge kitchen will be a highlight for those with culinary talents and if the weather's nice — which we're going to wager it will be — you can serve up dinner outside on the private patio. Better still, there's a barbecue for grilling up some meaty flavours to grateful guests.

This Venice home is an absolute delight. The proportions and layout are lovely, it's flooded with natural light, has great eco-credentials and it has a private and peaceful outdoor space. Stylishly decorated with a mid-century modern feel, and just a five-minute drive away from the beach, this place is pretty easy to love. Its recent redesign has made it sustainable – there's solar power and an osmosis water filtration system – and created a guesthouse we'd be thrilled to call home for a while. Sit in front of the gas flame fireplace, rustle up a meal in the kitchen (it's a bit retro but we love it) and sit out under the stars in your pretty garden – the soothing sound of the water feature will soon have you ready for bed. Just a short drive or a thirty-minute walk from the beach, you'll probably be heading down there most days. Santa Monica is very close by and it's just a twenty-five-minute drive from Hollywood. You'll also be able to stroll to some of the best bars and restaurants in LA on Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Rose Avenue.
