Just a short walk from the beach, and with all the gated community's excellent amenities on hand, it's a peaceful and private getaway surrounded by pretty gardens and mature trees. Inside, think vaulted ceilings, wood floors and neutral tones, with a tasteful coastal theme throughout. The heart of the home is the huge, open plan kitchen, with its double-height ceiling, cosy seating area and dining table – all with excellent views of the garden thanks to the large windows and sliding doors. On cooler evenings, snuggle up around the fire in the cosy living room, and on warm summer days cook outside on the grill and laze the days away in your hot tub. Everything here is within easy reach, whether it's the miles of perfect beaches, the oceanfront dining or the nearby riding stables. It's just a six-minute drive (or a pleasant bike ride) to the shops and restaurants of Harbour Town and the path down to the beach leads directly from your garden.

But at just twenty kilometres from crossing state lines into Savannah, Georgia, you can discover boldly flavoured seafood, antebellum architecture, and quirky shops – although it’s unlikely you’ll want to stray so far from your sanctuary.

Surrounded by lagoons on all sides, this low-country home is tucked into the flora and fauna of Hilton Head Island. The gracious nature of the home makes it ideal for both a short summer weekend and long stay alike. Wander through the elegant courtyard and find yourself at ease upon entering the living room reminiscent of a scene from Town and Country magazine. Wicker chairs and colourfully upholstered furniture are dotted throughout. Outside, spend hours in the pool before heading out for the day’s adventure. Time to polish off the ring and get down on one knee because this home has us head over heels. Only two hundred metres from the beach, this Hilton Head Island villa is a luxurious, private hideaway made for lazy summer days. Mornings start in the bedrooms, where floor to ceiling windows bring in lots of light, before toddling into the open-plan kitchen. There's a breakfast bar for quick eats, but we prefer big get-togethers on the dining table or on the patio outside. Days can be spent lounging by the curved swimming pool, where you can take a dip to cool off before padding back inside for a drink. When things get too warm, there are several hang-out spaces, including a bright and breezy lounge, thanks to its double height windows, and a reading nook with views over the pool. Should you want to explore further afield, it's a short drive or cycle to Harbour Town with its seafood restaurants, boutiques and bustling marina.

In between Harbour Town and South Beach on Hilton Head Island, this home epitomises holiday living with beach vibes abound thanks to the spot's whiteboard walls and maritime-themed furnishings. We particularly love the generous amount of social space; there's a double-volume living room and myriad of areas for guests to gather. Dinner can be eaten inside or out – on the large dining table underneath an artisanal light fitting or seated at the casual deck furniture across the patio. The kidney-shaped pool in the back garden is ready for cooling off from the heat – your hosts have even left you some colourful floats for guests both young and old – we're not ones to judge.

A beachy vibe runs throughout, with wooden floorboards that can easily be swept after sandy feet run across them, and slanted, high ceilings to provide a cool relief from the outdoor heat. The home is on the edge of a golf course and you can watch the action from the front deck, complete with a barbecue for rustling up some grilled delights if you get hungry. We love the wooden touches, which add a unique character, with gorgeous designer fabrics and comfy sofa space making this a dream area for relaxation. The open-plan kitchen invites you to savour communal meals, which are best enjoyed on the lovely back patio, which also features a fantastic dining table. There is also plenty of comfortable garden furniture out here – ideal for lazy afternoons or evening drinks under the stars.

We’ve got to hand it to this gorgeous home — or should we say mansion — on Hilton Head Island. As far as luxurious hideaways go, this one exudes class. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens and within a two-minute walk of the beach, there is something deliciously magical about this place. We fell in love with the secluded palm-fringed swimming pools (one for the adults and one for the children). In fact, the leafy garden is something of a centrepiece, with balconies, terraces, and charming arched loggias all cleverly arranged to give maximum views over this delightful outside space. Find a peaceful corner to read a book, sip a cool drink before dinner or tuck into a family feast beneath the stars. And who could fail to be charmed by the sweet little path, twisting through the trees to the sand dunes and beach beyond? Sweep up the grand steps from the pool area and the treats continue inside, with a lofty entrance hall and impressive open concept living space — perfect for gathering the whole family together. A second living area upstairs gives plenty of room for large groups and families travelling together. There are big bedrooms galore (think four-poster beds and balcony views), palatial bathrooms and bunk beds for the kids. And because it’s all part of an exclusive, larger resort, there’s a wealth of facilities and amenities to enjoy should you wish to, including three golf courses, a tennis centre, restaurants, shopping and harbourside entertainment.

The kitchen is fully equipped and four wishbone chairs line the bar, adding a modern touch to its traditional bones. But we know you didn’t come to Charleston just to stay indoors – even if the indoors are as charming as these ones. Lucky for you, you’re just one block from Upper King Street with its array of shops and restaurants, while Historic Charleston is less than a twenty-minute walk away.

Just short walk away from the beach on Hilton Head Island, this villa is offers true coastal chic. Part of a community development, the home has access to basketball and tennis courts, but there are plenty of tournaments to be had in the house too, with a foosball table and swimming pool. The designated cook can whip up their meals of choice on the outdoor grill, with plenty of seating for most of the house on the patio, while upstairs you'll find a medium sized kitchen for light meals. For peace and quiet, there are several balconies for reading and the bedrooms are fitted with vintage style furnishings and four-poster beds, perfect for hiding away from the world. When you do feel like exploring, the area is rich in activities, with water-sports, walking trails, and cycle routes all easy to access from home.

You’ll breathe a sigh of contentment the minute you step through the door of this dreamy beachfront apartment. Beautifully finished in natural sand and earth tones, this home feels like a continuation of the rolling dunes just beyond the balcony. Your eye will immediately be drawn in that direction too, with French doors framing a postcard-perfect view of swaying palms and sparkling ocean. Step through onto your private terrace to feel the gentle sea breeze. The building offers several shared spaces: immaculate tropical gardens surround a large outdoor pool circled with sun loungers and tall palms. There’s a communal barbecue area where you can have a cook-up and socialise with your neighbours. The fine white sandy beach and the shimmer of the ocean call to you from just beyond the pool.

A sweet summer’s day comes easy in this elegant, Georgian-style home. After a rejuvenating sleep in one of the lavish bedrooms, all you’ll want is to get out into the sun. We know that some people prefer sandy beaches while others like swimming pools, and we love that this home has both – a private, glassy pool out back and the beach just a stone’s throw away. The home also has an entertainment room and well-equipped bar to ensure that everyone gets their share of fun. Though with a golf course nearby and rest of the island playground, perhaps we didn’t even need to worry about that.

With its white clapboard exterior and powder-blue window shutters, this traditional home is the belle of the ball in Charleston. Step into a Southern scene of four-poster beds, floral wallpaper and palm prints in each of the bedrooms. While there is plenty of old-school charm in this townhouse, its recent refurbishment included some modern pops, like glamorous marble bathrooms with gold accents. In the living space, a kitchen, sofas and banquette seating are perfect for group debriefs after a long day. For a real taste of this part of the world, nab one of the wicker seats on the veranda for sundowners – preferably of the bourbon kind – before wandering a short distance to one of the city's famous restaurants or bars.

Amid sandy strands and a network of lagoons, this villa is in one of the most picturesque areas of South Carolina. In just ten minutes, you can move from the water basin's grassy banks to the ocean through the scenic woodland between the two. But really, you never need to leave the house, with its stunning private pool, an array of balconies and verandas and a basketball court cushioned between the trees. Huddle around the fire pit on winter evenings or cook up a BBQ on the grill by the pool in summer. Inside, the bedrooms have large beds and deluxe furnishings, while the sunken living room makes for a great space to relax in front of the TV. Rent kayaks and paddle boards by the dock of the lagoon and catch an unforgettable sunset from the water.

Located just outside of Charleston's historic downtown area and close to the shops, restaurants and bars of King Street, this home is in an enviable position within the city. And just like its surroundings, the building itself is steeped in history. Built in 1885, it boasts picturesque porches, hardwood floors and a crisp colour scheme. The kitchen is eye-catching with its bright green cabinets, and offers a bold contrast to the elegant Art Deco-inspired living area. Our favourite element, however, is the veranda. No trip to the southern states is complete without at least some of the relaxation taking place on a traditional covered porch, and this home offers a charming one where you can sit and while away the hours with a cool drink. 

Square Dance

It can sometimes be difficult to find a home for a big group getaway – the balance between communal spaces and private corners is always a tricky one, but this home definitely gets it right. Or perhaps we should say homes, as you'll find yourselves spread across two separate buildings, with a shared garden and courtyard between them. The impressive bedrooms allow you to shut the door, recharge your batteries and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet when you need to. Conversely, the large living rooms and, of course, the outdoor seating area provide plenty of room for parties and chatting into the night. The interiors are pleasingly minimalist, with hardwood floors and luxury furnishings giving the space an air of sophistication as well as comfort. Downtown Charleston is within easy walking distance – all its bars and restaurants are just a ten-minute stroll away, so heading out for dinner and drinks is as simple as walking down the street.

Just behind Upper King Street, this home benefits from a great location and plenty of peace and quiet. Part of a larger complex of homes, there is a lovely shared garden for residents to use, and with plenty of ancient trees, you won’t be running out of shady corners either. This home may look traditional on the outside, but inside it's very much shaking things up. Slow Southern days unwind on the pastel painted veranda, with its rocking chairs and swing – the perfect spot to get lost in a good book or natter with the rest of your group over an iced tea. On a picturesque street of swaying palm trees sits this traditional Victorian home. Built in 1885, it has a square, symmetrical exterior, covered porches, high ceilings and exposed beams. Inside, however, the home has been brought bang up to date. A modern kitchen with moody cabinets set the tone for this family home, which casually blends past and present design styles. The living area is just big enough to comfortably seat its eight guests andthere's a wonderful outdoor porch. Upper King Street, with its wide selection of restaurants, bars and shops, is just one block away. Historic downtown Charleston is a little farther away but is no less accessible. Hop in a taxi to be there in moments or make the short twenty-minute walk to admire the city’s rich history.

Summer Duck

Located on the second floor of a restored wood-fronted home in the heart of Charleston’s Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighbourhood, this home boasts an enviable position and charming interiors. Exposed trusses add an element of drama to the whitewashed living area and, thanks to its open concept, it’s also a lovely space in which to relax and spend quality time as a group. The crisp colour scheme continues into the bedrooms, where metal bed frames and unique side tables offer the only contrast to the otherwise pristine, white interiors. This home is close to the handsome streets of Historic Charleston (a 20-minute walk away) and Upper King Street sits just a few blocks away, offering an abundance of restaurants, bars and shops.
