On a full acre plot next to Gardiner's Bay, it's surrounded by tall trees. Inside, it's modern, bright and relaxing, with subtle nods to its coastal location. Cook in the state-of-the-art kitchen, barbecue outside on the terrace or screen a movie on the home cinema setup. There's ample outdoor seating and a delightful, heated private pool to enjoy, and in the evenings, you could always treat your loved ones to a performance on the home's drumkit. We love the huge, sociable sofa in the living room and the first-floor sun terrace in particular but nothing beats the location of this place. A matter of metres from the beach and surrounded by quiet streets perfect for walks and bike rides, it's also within easy reach of several shops and restaurants.

Two main suites have parents and in-laws covered, the sunroom is an excellent spot to enjoy a cup of tea in the afternoons and the kitchen is a dream to cook in, with glossy tiles, high-end appliances and all the crockery you'll need.

Make your way outside and while away sunny days by the pool. Come evening, fire up the barbecue and tuck into an alfresco feast before gathering around the fire pit on the Adirondack chairs to watch the stars come out. The peaceful scenery is made even better by the excellent location. This home is tucked away on a tree-lined cul-de-sac that backs up to a nature preserve, with walking trails right on your doorstep. This beautiful home is set within dense woodland on the northern East Hampton Coast, just two blocks from a private beach looking out over Gardiners Bay. Inside, there are beautiful hardwood floors, a cosy fireplace for cool evenings and cathedral-like ceilings over the dining area. The bedrooms have that softbox glow thanks to neutral tones and lightweight curtains that offer privacy without blocking the light (so you may want to pack an eye mask for lie-ins). Step outside onto the terrace, and you'll find a seating area centred around a fire pit and a separate dining table, plus a grill for alfresco cooking on long summer evenings. The well-maintained lawn is plenty big enough for the kids to play ball games and keep themselves entertained. If you can tear yourself away, you're just fifteen minutes' drive from an afternoon of wine tasting or twenty-five minutes to Montauk Brewing Company. For a more family-friendly day out, head over to the Hanks Pumpkintown or The Milk Pail for apple picking and corn mazes.

The former homestead and summer camp embodies one of the last wild spaces in the Hamptons, nestled right by the water's edge and facing Gardiner's Island. Guests will have access to canoes, kayaks, sailboats and a chance to enjoy excellent fishing. The home includes a converted, eighteenth-century barn, as well as a nineteenth-century ice house that has been transformed into a cute guest bungalow, to welcome up to ten guests into its cosy spaces. And if you're a chef, or at least fancy yourself one, then you will most definitely delight in the vegetable garden and wonderful country kitchen for meals the entire family will enjoy.

Exploring East Hampton is a breeze at this coastal cottage. Both downtown and the beach are easily accessible by bike, and a coffee shop and seafood restaurant are just down the street. How's that for being in the centre of the action? Back home, the heated seasonal pool is a highlight, as is the sprawling garden – trust us, they'll be plenty of space for little ones to let off some steam. Fast wi-fi makes remote working easy, while complimentary access to Netflix, Hulu and Disney+ is perfect for family movie nights. The fourth bedroom – which doubles as an office –  has a single sofa bed, which we think is best for children.

Wake up to views on one of the home's two private balconies, before whipping up breakfast in the state-of-the-art kitchen and sipping your morning coffee as you paddle in the sea. Days here can be spent sunbathing on the private sandy beach, getting out on the water kayaking or paddle boarding, and honing your fishing and clamming skills. Come the evening, relax in the open-air Jacuzzi or get comfy in the large lounge, before retiring to one of four generous bedrooms.

Anyone with a subscription to HBO might recognise The Old Life-Saving Station. The home has featured in both Lena Dunham’s Girls, and more recently, The Undoing, starring Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman. Staying here puts you in elite company, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s a unique house. Dating all the way back to the 1800s, when it was built as a coastguard station for the Long Island Sound, it’s been renovated since, but with lots of care put into maintaining the farmhouse atmosphere and the vintage furniture. The home is set on three acres of land on the North Fork, and from the veranda, you can hear the waves lapping against the shore of the private beach. It’s a magical setting, perfect for long summer afternoons (and if the water is too cold, there’s a 50ft pool as well). Colder evenings bring their own charm, as the vast kitchen and living room come into play. The large table seats fourteen easily, so every night feels like a dinner party, while the crackling fire in the other room sets the scene for an evening curled up on the sofa, with a hot drink in hand.

You don't even need to step out of this home to take in the view of Sam’s Creek and Mecox Bay, with the sea stretching out in the distance. At this cottage by the water, built up on stilts, you’ll be able to watch it all from the comfort of home. But why would you when you can step out onto the deck, wander down to your private dock or walk to the beach in just minutes. Inside, the home has more than a touch of Bauhaus about it. Designed by the late Peter Blake, it's mainly monochrome interior contrasts against the greenery framed by floor-to-ceiling windows. It's a peaceful spot, with an open layout and an air of calm – especially in the bedrooms. Its raised position makes it a unique place to stay, and allows it to really make the most of its surroundings. Spend time lazing on hammocks under the cherry tree or take to the water on the home's canoe.

If you’re looking for all the charm of a country cottage with the space and grandeur of a manor house, this is the spot for you. It’s a four-minute stroll to the vast stretch of sand at Long Beach and a six-minute drive sees you in the heart of the pretty village of Sag Harbor. Out here, you’ve got a pristine swimming pool set in the wooden deck and a shower to wash sandy feet after a trip to the beach.

Inside, it’s a mix of crisp white walls and ink-black accents. Gabled, white-wash ceilings give that country cottage aesthetic and floor-to-ceiling windows fill the place with sunlight. Boho beanbag chairs and pot plants add a rustic touch to the living room and the sleek, modern kitchen is fit for gourmet meals. Underfloor heating in the plush bathrooms is another nice touch.

A calming medley of greys, blues, and whites flows throughout the interior. Sliding doors in the living room lead to the outside, letting in plenty of light and a refreshing forest breeze. Choose from a variety of places to relax; around the swimming pool, by the barbecue area, or in the basement where a large space for indoor hockey matches, skateboarding or soccer is separated by glass.

Not too far from the bright lights of New York City, this striking and stylish home sits near the beaches of Westhampton and among the protected marshlands of Long Island. The house itself is a modern twist on the traditional clapboard homes the area is famous for, with wraparound decks looking into the treetops to the rear and plenty of sliding doors allowing the indoors to seamlessly slip into the outdoor space. Downstairs, the living space is all about its designer leather sofa and chairs, as well as a large glass dining table. There's an excellent kitchen, with everything you'll need to cook at home, and even a den upstairs, complete with a sofa and office desk for working remotely. Outdoors, the huge deck is the star of the show, with seating areas, an alfresco dining spot, a cabana and a swimming pool. It's just a ten-minute drive to Westhampton beach to paddle in the Atlantic Ocean or visit one of the many excellent bars or restaurants.
