This Hamptons house sits on seven acres of lush greenery, with plenty of space for both kids and adults to enjoy. A ten minute cycle or five minute drive will take you into Southampton, with its bustling restaurants and boutiques, or down to the sands at Cooper's Beach. An idyllic escape for all the family, this waterfront home sits in the hamlet of North Sea, part of larger Southhampton, and within an easy drive of a wide selection of restaurants, boutique shops and beautiful beaches. Whether you're here for a weekend or a longer stay, you'll immediately feel relaxed in this quiet spot, surrounded by nature. There's a huge, private garden with direct access to the water and an illuminated dock, so lovers of the outdoors will be in their element. Hire a boat, or borrow the home's kayaks and paddleboard to make the most of its unique location. Inside, it's a bright and beautiful space with a truly loved and lived-in feel. Made up of two units, with a staircase joining them together, you'll find two kitchens, two living rooms, and a total of four bedrooms – plus a playroom which can act as a nursery. We loved the upper level's stunning dining area – large enough for you all to eat together, opening out to a large deck and offering panoramic views of the water (it's also where you'll find the piano if you're musically inclined). In the evenings, barbecue outdoors before lighting the fire pit and watching the stars come out one by one.

You don't even need to step out of this home to take in the view of Sam’s Creek and Mecox Bay, with the sea stretching out in the distance. At this cottage by the water, built up on stilts, you’ll be able to watch it all from the comfort of home. But why would you when you can step out onto the deck, wander down to your private dock or walk to the beach in just minutes. Inside, the home has more than a touch of Bauhaus about it. Designed by the late Peter Blake, it's mainly monochrome interior contrasts against the greenery framed by floor-to-ceiling windows. It's a peaceful spot, with an open layout and an air of calm – especially in the bedrooms. Its raised position makes it a unique place to stay, and allows it to really make the most of its surroundings. Spend time lazing on hammocks under the cherry tree or take to the water on the home's canoe.

Set within an acre of lush green grounds, this seriously charming home is just a twenty-minute drive from the centre of Sag Harbour - undoubtedly one of New York State's best-kept secrets. This centuries-old seaside village may be known as one of the most family-friendly places in the Hamptons, but its strictly adults-only activities include a visit to the nearby Wölffer Estate vineyards to sample their famed rosé cider. If hitting the many vintage stores in Sag Harbour isn’t on the cards, head out to explore the bay on one of the paddleboards or kayaks provided, by virtue of your own exclusive boat dock. Should that sound a little too energetic, you can also just take a dip in your private pool or luxuriate in the jacuzzi. The home is fresh, cool and contemporary while staying welcoming with warm rattan, bohemian touches, colourful books and art, and a rustic beachy feel. An aperitif on the pretty terrace is a must on balmy nights, or spend an evening around the fire with a movie in the cosy living room.

A Faithful Friend is nearly a hundred years old, but in terms of its luxury and comfort, it might as well be brand new. Once you’ve had a flick through the photos, you won’t be surprised to find out that it’s been featured in many design magazines. The patio, pool, and garden alone are impressive enough, but there's also a climatised screened porch off the kitchen, and a private deck off the main bedroom. And once you go inside, the atmosphere is high end and elegant without feeling pompous or stuffy. If all of this weren’t enough, there’s a small dock on a creek leading to Mecox Bay, so you can kayak down to the beach.


A Faithful Friend

Traditional on the outside, smart and modern inside, this home is a serene coastal haven. Every element here has been carefully considered to ensure you feel as welcome and relaxed as possible. The rooms are all soothingly decked out in white, with tasteful nods to its seaside location. But this is more than your average beach home. On the lower level you’ll find a cinema room – complete with mini fridge and popcorn machine, naturally – and there’s a Sonos sound system, a state-of-the-art fitness bike (if you really feel the need to train while you're away) and mini arcade machines in the games room. In it's a great spot, close to North Sea and the Tuckahoe Woods Preserve. A short drive or a bike ride will take you into Southampton village and its long stretch of sandy beaches.

Mere steps from the beach, this four-bedroom farmhouse sleeps ten and is ideal for a large family getaway. Rustic it may be, but the interiors don’t skimp on style – white walls and pops of colour lend it a modern Scandinavian vibe. An open-plan kitchen with a Carrara marble island and KitchenAid mixer make meal prep a cinch – get everyone together to bake a cake. A travel crib, highchair and changing pad are provided for the littlest family members.

Dating back to the eighteenth century, it’s safe to say that The Whaler’s Cottage is steeped in history. It has a wonderful garden with lots of room for relaxing, and the interiors are stunning. It’s easy to see that Tom and Max have an eye for design. Light-filled, minimalist, and incredibly elegant, it’s the kind of place you look forward to coming home after perusing Sag Harbor or walking by the beach. Speaking of sandy stretches, you’re close to the village centre, giving you easy access to several beaches, along with lots of wonderful restaurants, shops, and bars.

It may look Old World from the outside, but behind this home's traditional shingle exterior is a luxurious and playful home to call your own in The Hamptons. Packed with designer touches, we love the bright, double-height living space, with its character fireplace and huge windows. Parents can enjoy the privacy of the downstairs master suite, with the remaining three bedrooms upstairs. And perhaps while the little ones explore the play shed outside, you could pour a drink from the wet bar and grab a cosy spot on the patio. From here it's just a stroll into Bridgehampton Village when you're ready to explore – an area known for its great walks, cycle routes and water sports. Luckily, the host has provided a shed full of bikes, kayaks and outdoor gear (there's even an outdoor shower for afterwards). Cool off in the saltwater pool, then fire up the grill for a long, lazy meal on the patio or in the formal dining room – doors flung open to the pretty garden. It's just a five-minute drive to Water Mill, and a little further to Southampton and Sag Harbour.

Then, in the evenings, cook your fresh fish in the state-of-the-art open kitchen. On a full acre plot next to Gardiner's Bay, it's surrounded by tall trees. Inside, it's modern, bright and relaxing, with subtle nods to its coastal location. Cook in the state-of-the-art kitchen, barbecue outside on the terrace or screen a movie on the home cinema setup. There's ample outdoor seating and a delightful, heated private pool to enjoy, and in the evenings, you could always treat your loved ones to a performance on the home's drumkit. We love the huge, sociable sofa in the living room and the first-floor sun terrace in particular but nothing beats the location of this place. A matter of metres from the beach and surrounded by quiet streets perfect for walks and bike rides, it's also within easy reach of several shops and restaurants.

A haven of tranquillity, this serene home is perfect for recharging your batteries. Step inside and be soothed by the classic Hamptons style – think ample-sized living spaces designed for entertaining, calm colours inspired by the coast and oodles of windows flooding each room with natural light. It's the ideal family pad, especially with a lounge fit for kids (complete with a pool table) in the basement and a workout room (including a Peloton bike) that fitness buffs will appreciate. And there's no denying that there's plenty of space to spread out. Two main suites have parents and in-laws covered, the sunroom is an excellent spot to enjoy a cup of tea in the afternoons and the kitchen is a dream to cook in, with glossy tiles, high-end appliances and all the crockery you'll need.

Make your way outside and while away sunny days by the pool. Come evening, fire up the barbecue and tuck into an alfresco feast before gathering around the fire pit on the Adirondack chairs to watch the stars come out. The peaceful scenery is made even better by the excellent location. This home is tucked away on a tree-lined cul-de-sac that backs up to a nature preserve, with walking trails right on your doorstep. It's an easy seven-minute drive to the stores, restaurants and coffee shops in East Hampton, while Two Mile Hollow Beach and other stretches of sandy coastline are just eleven minutes away.

The Creekside Cabin

There are a lot of adjectives we could throw at this home in The Berkshires; cosy, darling, divine. But none of them really do it justice. This place is made for taking it back to analogue and spending quality time together, around the stand-up piano, playing a board game in the sunny second sitting room, or pausing for a moment in the secret reading nook. A low, wooden ceiling, exposed brick wall and a wood-burning stove in the main lounge provide the ‘cosy’, while the plush velvet armchairs and antique dining table provide the ‘divine’. The bistro seating in the kitchen comes with a view of Butternut Mountain. Plus, there are several laptop-friendly desks designed for remote working and a dedicated office for video calls.

Outside, (well, almost outside) you’ve got an enclosed front porch with deck chairs for sunny days and a first-floor balcony begging for an evening tipple. In the surrounding greenery of the garden, let the kids run free on the lawn before gathering the group around the fire pit for a spot of stargazing at night.

You’re a five-minute drive from the artisan shops, local markets and restaurants of Great Barrington here, and skiing on Butternut Mountain is a short drive away too.

Once an 1890s carriage house, this home has been designed for country living for a small family. Low timber ceilings and hardwood floors retain the barn-like element, but instead of hay bales, you’ve got comfortable king-size beds for grown-ups and secret sleeping spots for kids in the mezzanine above the loft. Huge windows in the living room let in the sunshine, streaming through the trees, and in the evening, there’s a wood-burning stove to keep the chill at bay. The open-plan kitchen has a large double fridge, kitchen island and plenty of storage space for all the fresh goodies from the nearby farmer’s market. You’re in the middle of nature’s bounty here, after all. The farm is at the foot of the Catskills, away from it all, so you can spend your days immersed in the wilderness of hiking and biking trails. Stick close to home and wander the acres of farm grounds, through woodlands, past ponds or just the short dander to the farm’s swimming pool.

A nature lover's dream atop a 100-acre historic farm in North Stonington, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This home offers a one-of-a-kind stay – spend your mornings in the fresh air helping the hosts tend to the farm animals in the tranquil setting to feel at one with nature – from feeding chickens and collecting eggs to brushing the horses and rooster calls here and there, but it's all part of the experience.

The home itself is chic and stylish, yet homey. Mornings are best spent sipping coffee on your patio while admiring the mountain and pasture vistas of your host's Texas longhorn cattle and horses. The living area is accented with slate grey throughout, while the brown provides an earthy sense to make you feel even more connected to your environment, and is ideal for cosying up after a long day of wandering through the unending greenery. We love that the second bedroom has an art studio for letting your creativity flow, where you can paint a stunning picture of the grounds you're staying on, as well as skylights, so you can fall asleep beneath the stars.

When you want to splash around in the sea, take a twenty-minute trip to Misquamicut State Beach, fantastic for the kids to spend a day at the beach while you sit back and relax. Alternatively, drive twenty minutes to the beautiful seaport village of Mystic and explore the foodie haven featuring the area's local meats, organic produce and seafood for a tantalising supper. Stop by Jonathan Edwards winery on the way to pick up a bottle of Pinot Grigio to enjoy back at the house around the fire pit with blankets wrapped around, or check out the dedicated bar area in the living room and craft your own cocktails. There's plenty of North Stonington's rich agricultural heritage to explore nearby, including cattle ranches, organic farms and vineyards (fifteen minutes away by car). 

Mystic Countryside Farm

This NYT-featured Catskills home is not quite the cabin it seems to be. What looks like a single storey home from one angle is actually built over a creekside slope, and we think it's one of the most interesting places we've seen for a peaceful stay in the woods. Floor-to-ceiling windows make full use of the region’s scenery, and sliding doors out onto a deck mean you can practically reach out and touch the pines – you can even listen to the rushing waters of the creek from here. Modern and stylish, the design here isn't trying to outshine the views, with wood floors, white walls and a Scandi feel to its furnishings. Two of the bedrooms are on the top floor and have such great views across the canopy you'll think you're staying in a treehouse, while immaculate bathrooms are outfitted with marble, lava stone and Italian Porcelanosa tiles. If you can drag yourself away, head out on hikes, explore the nearby farm shops, or book a meal at a local restaurant – there are several within a short drive. But we recommend making your way to the home's little campfire site, with some hot chocolate and marshmallows, for an evening you'll never forget.
