This NYT-featured Catskills home is not quite the cabin it seems to be. What looks like a single storey home from one angle is actually built over a creekside slope, and we think it's one of the most interesting places we've seen for a peaceful stay in the woods. Floor-to-ceiling windows make full use of the region’s scenery, and sliding doors out onto a deck mean you can practically reach out and touch the pines – you can even listen to the rushing waters of the creek from here. Modern and stylish, the design here isn't trying to outshine the views, with wood floors, white walls and a Scandi feel to its furnishings. Two of the bedrooms are on the top floor and have such great views across the canopy you'll think you're staying in a treehouse, while immaculate bathrooms are outfitted with marble, lava stone and Italian Porcelanosa tiles. If you can drag yourself away, head out on hikes, explore the nearby farm shops, or book a meal at a local restaurant – there are several within a short drive. But we recommend making your way to the home's little campfire site, with some hot chocolate and marshmallows, for an evening you'll never forget.

Tucked into a rock ledge, thick with moss and ferns, Hemlock & Cedar is the perfect getaway if you want to get back in touch with nature. It’s in a secluded part of the Catskills, just beside Ashokan reservoir, and the setting is reflected in the cabin itself. The beams are made of hemlock, and the siding is charred cedar. Despite the remote, off-the-grid feeling, the home is actually very modern. It has an induction hob, central heating and air conditioning, and even high-speed internet. For the most part, though, you’ll want to be outside with the abundance of wildlife and native plants.

This Woodstock residence is one for the design-savvy folk. Once a studio belonging to acclaimed realist painter Reginald Marsh, the space has been transformed into a stunning family home. It was proudly featured in Italy's Icon Design Magazine for its attention to detail and considered use of elegant and characterful materials. 

We loved the living space, particularly the expansive ceilings, enormous windows and integration of concrete and wood. Rise and shine to picturesque views of the beautiful garden. Relax on the outdoor day bed, which looks out over the legendary Indian Head mountain ridge, have a picnic by the swimming pond, surrounded by juniper trees and century-old cedars, or follow the burbling stream into the woods. Then later, gather around the fire pit. Whatever you decide to do, this home invites you to slow down the pace in style.

If you'd like to explore further afield, lace-up your boots and take a drive out to a hiking trail  –  the Indian Head Wilderness and the Bluestone Wild Forest are no more than fifteen minutes away.

Settle back at the peaceful chalet, hidden in the trees. Perhaps light the fire pit and chill out under the maples. Inside, it’s Scandi-chic and minimalist, with a rustic stone fireplace with a wood-burning stove softening the living room. You’re very much out in the forest here, so woodland critters might make an appearance at the big windows, and there’s peace and quiet all around. Each room has been lovingly styled by the host, Ayanna, who has instilled her character and charm into the home. The location has a semi-rural feel, which is wonderfully peaceful, but The Archway is still located near to the village centre. The home is well suited for families as there's lots of room for children to play and the twin bedroom has been thoughtfully designed to welcome young ones.

Set between the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains, this spectacular 18th-century farmhouse is full of upstate New York charm. Nestled in 35 acres of secluded woodland, the house is a breath of fresh air less than two hours’ drive from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. Step inside and you will instantly notice the owners’ keen aesthetic eye and attention to detail. Each room is bursting with character, and full of antique furniture, contemporary art, and vintage trinkets.  

The distinctive living room has a large wood burning fireplace and plenty of games for the kids. There is also a sun room which is perfect for relaxing in with a book. The farmhouse kitchen is well equipped with a range of appliances and cooking essentials. Upstairs, the palatial main suite comes with an office for remote working, a living area with its own fireplace and coffee station, and a claw-footed bathtub in the bathroom. The second and third bedroom have their own unique charm, and there is also a junior bedroom with plenty of toys and books for the little ones.

Outside, there is plenty to do and see. You can pick apples in autumn from your woodland (there are wellies at the house if it’s muddy!), go skiing and sledding in winter, or follow one of the nature trails leading to the creek. The village of Saugerties is a six-minute drive away, where you’ll find a grocery store, a farmer’s market and some laid back restaurants.

The Ashokan is an exquisite barn-styled house nestled within rich woodland landscape. The quaint exterior shelters an incredibly contemporary and stylish interior. From the patterned floors and wonderful impressionist paintings, to the rustic oak furnishings and floorboards, this house seamlessly blends homeliness with elegance. The large bedrooms have plush deluxe beds (although the mezzanine bedroom offers very little privacy and has no curtains), as well as plentiful dressing space and luxurious bathrooms. The estate is located moments away from the beautiful Ashokan reservoir. Spend your days taking in the breathtaking landscape while hiking the trails, or perhaps head into the nearby Woodstock to wander around the legendary town.

Sitting on the deck of this beautiful home in Rosendale, which overlooks the Catskills mountains in one direction and the woods in the other, you'd be forgiven for thinking you're secluded away, miles from civilisation. When in actual fact, Main Street is just down the road. However, the privileged location means that hiking and biking trails start right on your doorstep. After a day exploring the great outdoors, fire up the barbecue for an alfresco meal, or cosy up in front of the wood burner with a book. Inside, the simple, pared-back decor lets the jaw-dropping views take centre stage, with something to catch your eye in every direction. The home is well set-up for kids, with an art/music room, toys, games, books and even a trampoline in the back yard. The lack of TV and occasionally spotty internet connection means the stage is set to unplug from the virtual world and reconnect with the physical one. If you're not ready to let go completely, the quiet charm of Rosendale is just a mile away. Here, a local creative community thrives. Main Street is lined with independent boutiques selling locally made goods, while restaurants focus on farm-to-table eating. Craving some screen time? The Rosendale Theatre screens indie movies along with concerts and live productions.

Nestled amongst the trees ten minutes away from Woodstock, this wondrous three-storey tower is as well positioned to hiking nearby woods and mountains as it is to the galleries and boutiques of Woodstock. Keen skiers will love staying here thanks to its close proximity to the Hunter ski centre, a 30-minute drive away. Discover the hidden lakes and waterfalls nearby by day, and stargaze from your own hammock by night. By the time you leave, you'll be at one with the woods. 

Soul Of The Willow

This beautiful old clapboard church has been turned into a woodland retreat like no other, where deer regularly stroll among the trees. Just outside Woodstock, there are craft beer breweries, farm shops and mom and pop coffee shops a short drive away, and trails into the Catskills are all around. From the outside, this home still looks like it holds Sunday Service, tucked in 1.5 acres of forest. 
Arched, stained-glass windows throw rainbows of light into the living room and what was once the altar is now a cosy nook for a wood-burning stove, framed by the wooden mantel from a famous Broadway theatre. The kitchen is fully-equipped with spices, ingredients, utensils and everything you'll need to prepare a hearty home-cooked meal. What was once the Sunday School room is now a lavish bedroom and just beneath the belltower, you’ll find a reading nook for lazy days, plus a range of games to keep everyone entertained. Outside, you’ll find a barbecue grill and seating on the patio, and a hammock to enjoy the sounds of the forest with a gentle sway. This is one home that really needs to be seen to be believed.

Host Casey has built fairytale hangouts to immerse you in nature, including a hammock overlooking a waterfall, a gazebo beside a lily pond, and a yoga platform in the woods. The barn decking and outdoor kitchen adorned with fairy lights is a magical spot for family meals. Entertaining the family is easy with fireside songs (your hosts recommend making s'mores with Tate's Cookies instead of Graham Crackers – you can thank them later), swims in the pool and indoor and outdoor games for all ages to enjoy. We fully envision your kids daubed with mud having gone fully Lord of the Flies by the end of your time here.

In the quiet hamlet of Pine Bush on the outskirts of the Hudson Valley, this charming 1920s apartment is the perfect space to get away from it all. The interior is an eclectic blend of styles, expertly mixing antique furniture and period features with modern finishes. While the comfortable living room is cosy and bright, the fully-stocked kitchen – with its blue cabinets and retro table – is more mid-century inspired. We love how homely it feels. Picture morning breakfasts in the kitchen, meals around the dining table with a bottle of something local (there are plenty of distilleries and wineries in the area) and movie nights snuggled up on the couch. On nights you don't feel like cooking, the bars and restaurants on Main Street are only a five-minute walk away. When you're ready to venture out, grab your hiking boots and hit the trails at one of the nearby state parks. For a more relaxed pace, browse the valley's many antique shops or make the forty-five-minute drive to Poughkeepsie.

Featured in both Dwell and the New York Times, we couldn't help but be impressed by this cabin, standing on 19 acres of private land. The reason for the media attention will be evident in the open living space. Perfect for socialising with your guests, the wooden furniture and beams overhead capture the frontier spirit – turn on the woodstove and play games, or make use of the projector. The bedrooms are small but comfortable and kids will love the bunk beds. Of course, the real draw here is the outdoor area – acres of private, forested land, a private pond (perfect for spotting wildlife), tree swings and fire pits collude to create a rustic paradise.

Tucked away just outside of Woodstock, this impressive home welcomes families and friends to spend a few relaxing days in the Hudson Valley. Fully renovated in 2017, your hosts have truly thought of everything to ensure anyone who stays here has a magical experience. The original home was built in the late nineteenth-century and much of its original character has been retained, while an extension was added in the 1980s that now houses the spacious kitchen, lounge and four large bedrooms. 

There’s a separate office for anyone that needs to get some work done while you’re here and the playroom, gaming area, jungle gym and bouncy house are sure to keep the kids occupied. For the adults, the outdoor hot tub, swimming pool, and fire pit are perfect accessories to help you wind down at the end of a long day.

This secluded home is set on 26 acres of private land. You may be in rural Saugerties, but with a private pool, seven-seater cinema, and shuffleboard table, there’s plenty to keep you occupied here. And when you’re ready to relax, two Jacuzzis await – one in the main bedroom and a seven-person ThermoSpa in the garden. If days out are on the cards, Woodstock is just a ten-minute drive away and the Catskill Mountains can be reached in half an hour. At full occupancy, four guests will be sharing a room with two queen-sized beds so the sleeping arrangements won’t suit everyone, but we think this house has a lot to offer a group of friends or families wanting to get away from it all.

Sunny months see barbecues on the deck beneath the stringed lights and in colder months the firepit will keep you warm. Whatever the season, the hot tub is always waiting for an evening soak. Inside it’s anything but rustic, where velvet sofas invite you to put your feet up (perhaps after a hike in the nearby Catskills) and a monochrome white and grey kitchen has something of a boho-luxe feel. The bedroom is, quite frankly, huge. It has its own seating area, like a lavish hotel suite, and a second desk (the first is in the living room overlooking the trees). Woodstock, with its craft beer brewery, artisan bakeries, mom-and-pop-style coffee shops and indie art galleries, is just a fifteen-minute walk away if you don’t want to get the car out. But exploring further sees you at Hunter or Belleayre ski resorts, a forty-minute drive if you want to hit the slopes.

From the hot tub and wood fired sauna to the beautiful views, this is the perfect setting for a refreshing and romantic retreat.
