Spend just a few minutes of lounging on the deck, looking out on the sprawling greens of the Fazio Golf Course, and you'll understand why this Hilton Head home is a must-visit. It's situated in the gated Palmetto Dunes, an oceanfront resort bursting with outdoor activities, including tennis, surf lessons and kayaking in the saltwater lagoon. For a more relaxed pace, there's fishing and three on-site golf courses to choose from. The beach is just a seven-minute stroll away — grab a towel, pack a picnic and spend the day with the sand between your toes. When you need a break from the sun, there's plenty of room inside to sprawl out. The large windows let in heaps of natural light and the vaulted ceilings create even more space. In the evenings, you can prepare your catch of the day in the open-plan kitchen and dine at the table in front of the double-sided fireplace. If you don't feel like cooking, drive for ten minutes to the beachside restaurants, bars, and grills in the resort, or head to nearby Shelter Cove Marina for even more choice.

A sweet summer’s day comes easy in this elegant, Georgian-style home. After a rejuvenating sleep in one of the lavish bedrooms, all you’ll want is to get out into the sun. We know that some people prefer sandy beaches while others like swimming pools, and we love that this home has both – a private, glassy pool out back and the beach just a stone’s throw away. The home also has an entertainment room and well-equipped bar to ensure that everyone gets their share of fun. Though with a golf course nearby and rest of the island playground, perhaps we didn’t even need to worry about that.

Part of Sea Pines Plantation, where it all started for holiday rentals on beautiful Hilton Head Island, this fully renovated home is the perfect place to switch off and relax. Just a short walk from the beach, and with all the gated community's excellent amenities on hand, it's a peaceful and private getaway surrounded by pretty gardens and mature trees. Inside, think vaulted ceilings, wood floors and neutral tones, with a tasteful coastal theme throughout. The heart of the home is the huge, open plan kitchen, with its double-height ceiling, cosy seating area and dining table – all with excellent views of the garden thanks to the large windows and sliding doors. On cooler evenings, snuggle up around the fire in the cosy living room, and on warm summer days cook outside on the grill and laze the days away in your hot tub. Everything here is within easy reach, whether it's the miles of perfect beaches, the oceanfront dining or the nearby riding stables. It's just a six-minute drive (or a pleasant bike ride) to the shops and restaurants of Harbour Town and the path down to the beach leads directly from your garden.

Just short walk away from the beach on Hilton Head Island, this villa is offers true coastal chic. Part of a community development, the home has access to basketball and tennis courts, but there are plenty of tournaments to be had in the house too, with a foosball table and swimming pool. The designated cook can whip up their meals of choice on the outdoor grill, with plenty of seating for most of the house on the patio, while upstairs you'll find a medium sized kitchen for light meals. For peace and quiet, there are several balconies for reading and the bedrooms are fitted with vintage style furnishings and four-poster beds, perfect for hiding away from the world. When you do feel like exploring, the area is rich in activities, with water-sports, walking trails, and cycle routes all easy to access from home.

This beautiful home has a prime location overlooking the Palmetto Dunes lagoon. Just ten minutes’ walk from Hilton Head’s dazzling sands, it’s an ideal base for a beach holiday. There’s something very classic about the interior, with muted neutrals, layered lighting and high-quality furnishings. The lofty panelled ceilings in the lounge and the Roman-style columns in the entrance hall give an added sense of grandeur to the living space.  Large windows overlook the lagoon and the private pool, where we imagine you’ll spend most of your time. Holidays here are all about enjoying the perks of the Palmetto Dunes community, with three world-class golf courses, a tennis centre, restaurants, shops and free use of the Dunes Buggy. Outdoorsy types will love the forty kilometres of paved bike paths and the Atlantic surf. After a long day of sun, sea and fun, we can see you sipping a Long Island iced tea on one of the deck chairs that have been thoughtfully set up by the lagoon, before enjoying a balmy evening dining on the terrace. Perfection.

Amid sandy strands and a network of lagoons, this villa is in one of the most picturesque areas of South Carolina. In just ten minutes, you can move from the water basin's grassy banks to the ocean through the scenic woodland between the two. But really, you never need to leave the house, with its stunning private pool, an array of balconies and verandas and a basketball court cushioned between the trees. Huddle around the fire pit on winter evenings or cook up a BBQ on the grill by the pool in summer. Inside, the bedrooms have large beds and deluxe furnishings, while the sunken living room makes for a great space to relax in front of the TV. Rent kayaks and paddle boards by the dock of the lagoon and catch an unforgettable sunset from the water.

In between Harbour Town and South Beach on Hilton Head Island, this home epitomises holiday living with beach vibes abound thanks to the spot's whiteboard walls and maritime-themed furnishings. We particularly love the generous amount of social space; there's a double-volume living room and myriad of areas for guests to gather. Dinner can be eaten inside or out – on the large dining table underneath an artisanal light fitting or seated at the casual deck furniture across the patio. The kidney-shaped pool in the back garden is ready for cooling off from the heat – your hosts have even left you some colourful floats for guests both young and old – we're not ones to judge.

You’ll breathe a sigh of contentment the minute you step through the door of this dreamy beachfront apartment. Beautifully finished in natural sand and earth tones, this home feels like a continuation of the rolling dunes just beyond the balcony. Your eye will immediately be drawn in that direction too, with French doors framing a postcard-perfect view of swaying palms and sparkling ocean. Step through onto your private terrace to feel the gentle sea breeze. The building offers several shared spaces: immaculate tropical gardens surround a large outdoor pool circled with sun loungers and tall palms. There’s a communal barbecue area where you can have a cook-up and socialise with your neighbours. The fine white sandy beach and the shimmer of the ocean call to you from just beyond the pool.

Days take on a slower pace on Hilton Head Island and this villa-style home is perfect for unwinding. A beachy vibe runs throughout, with wooden floorboards that can easily be swept after sandy feet run across them, and slanted, high ceilings to provide a cool relief from the outdoor heat. Keep an eye on the whole family in the open living, kitchen and dining room, as they play card games in the alcove or enjoy movie nights piled on the sofas. The home is on the edge of a golf course and you can watch the action from the front deck, complete with a barbecue for rustling up some grilled delights if you get hungry. For peace and quiet, the upstairs master bedroom has a private balcony, perfect for curling up with a book. Part of a complex, the home has access to a shared pool and tennis courts, while it's only a short drive to Harbour Town and the beach.

Summer Heat

Time to polish off the ring and get down on one knee because this home has us head over heels. Only two hundred metres from the beach, this Hilton Head Island villa is a luxurious, private hideaway made for lazy summer days. Mornings start in the bedrooms, where floor to ceiling windows bring in lots of light, before toddling into the open-plan kitchen. There's a breakfast bar for quick eats, but we prefer big get-togethers on the dining table or on the patio outside. Days can be spent lounging by the curved swimming pool, where you can take a dip to cool off before padding back inside for a drink. When things get too warm, there are several hang-out spaces, including a bright and breezy lounge, thanks to its double height windows, and a reading nook with views over the pool. Should you want to explore further afield, it's a short drive or cycle to Harbour Town with its seafood restaurants, boutiques and bustling marina.

Southern family living meets beach charm at this home on Hilton Head Island. The wraparound porch, pool and ping-pong table make it the perfect place to while away long afternoons in the sun. When you're ready to get out and about, you won't have to go far to get to world-renowned beaches and golf courses. Coligny Plaza – one of the livelier areas of the island – is also nearby, so there are several restaurant to try out. But we wouldn’t blame you for just having an ice cream before heading home to fire up the grill as the sun goes down over. There’s nothing quite like a cookout to end the day.

Step out to a refreshing pool and sun deck, and of course, alfresco dining next to the gas barbecue comes as standard. Just like this house, the natural world is a huge part of the local area's charm. This whole barrier island is eco-friendly and has a myriad of beaches. The house is in a quiet resort preserve with a protected wildlife forest between it and the mainland. With this location, you’ll feel agreeably separate from big city life. But at just twenty kilometres from crossing state lines into Savannah, Georgia, you can discover boldly flavoured seafood, antebellum architecture, and quirky shops – although it’s unlikely you’ll want to stray so far from your sanctuary.
