We’ve got to hand it to this gorgeous home — or should we say mansion — on Hilton Head Island. As far as luxurious hideaways go, this one exudes class. Surrounded by lush tropical gardens and within a two-minute walk of the beach, there is something deliciously magical about this place. We fell in love with the secluded palm-fringed swimming pools (one for the adults and one for the children). In fact, the leafy garden is something of a centrepiece, with balconies, terraces, and charming arched loggias all cleverly arranged to give maximum views over this delightful outside space. Find a peaceful corner to read a book, sip a cool drink before dinner or tuck into a family feast beneath the stars. And who could fail to be charmed by the sweet little path, twisting through the trees to the sand dunes and beach beyond? Sweep up the grand steps from the pool area and the treats continue inside, with a lofty entrance hall and impressive open concept living space — perfect for gathering the whole family together. A second living area upstairs gives plenty of room for large groups and families travelling together. There are big bedrooms galore (think four-poster beds and balcony views), palatial bathrooms and bunk beds for the kids. Only two hundred metres from the beach, this Hilton Head Island villa is a luxurious, private hideaway made for lazy summer days. Mornings start in the bedrooms, where floor to ceiling windows bring in lots of light, before toddling into the open-plan kitchen. There's a breakfast bar for quick eats, but we prefer big get-togethers on the dining table or on the patio outside. Days can be spent lounging by the curved swimming pool, where you can take a dip to cool off before padding back inside for a drink. When things get too warm, there are several hang-out spaces, including a bright and breezy lounge, thanks to its double height windows, and a reading nook with views over the pool. Should you want to explore further afield, it's a short drive or cycle to Harbour Town with its seafood restaurants, boutiques and bustling marina. 

Glory Days

In between Harbour Town and South Beach on Hilton Head Island, this home epitomises holiday living with beach vibes abound thanks to the spot's whiteboard walls and maritime-themed furnishings. We particularly love the generous amount of social space; there's a double-volume living room and myriad of areas for guests to gather. Dinner can be eaten inside or out – on the large dining table underneath an artisanal light fitting or seated at the casual deck furniture across the patio. The kidney-shaped pool in the back garden is ready for cooling off from the heat – your hosts have even left you some colourful floats for guests both young and old – we're not ones to judge.

This beautiful home has a prime location overlooking the Palmetto Dunes lagoon. Just ten minutes’ walk from Hilton Head’s dazzling sands, it’s an ideal base for a beach holiday. There’s something very classic about the interior, with muted neutrals, layered lighting and high-quality furnishings. The lofty panelled ceilings in the lounge and the Roman-style columns in the entrance hall give an added sense of grandeur to the living space.  Large windows overlook the lagoon and the private pool, where we imagine you’ll spend most of your time. Holidays here are all about enjoying the perks of the Palmetto Dunes community, with three world-class golf courses, a tennis centre, restaurants, shops and free use of the Dunes Buggy. Outdoorsy types will love the forty kilometres of paved bike paths and the Atlantic surf. After a long day of sun, sea and fun, we can see you sipping a Long Island iced tea on one of the deck chairs that have been thoughtfully set up by the lagoon, before enjoying a balmy evening dining on the terrace. Perfection.

Surrounded by lagoons on all sides, this low-country home is tucked into the flora and fauna of Hilton Head Island. The gracious nature of the home makes it ideal for both a short summer weekend and long stay alike. Wander through the elegant courtyard and find yourself at ease upon entering the living room reminiscent of a scene from Town and Country magazine. Wicker chairs and colourfully upholstered furniture are dotted throughout. Outside, spend hours in the pool before heading out for the day’s adventure. Sea Pines Resort has an outdoor activity or amenity for everyone, from walking and horse-riding trails to five miles of pristine beaches and famed golf courses. It can sometimes be difficult to find a home for a big group getaway – the balance between communal spaces and private corners is always a tricky one, but this home definitely gets it right. Or perhaps we should say homes, as you'll find yourselves spread across two separate buildings, with a shared garden and courtyard between them. The impressive bedrooms allow you to shut the door, recharge your batteries and enjoy a moment of peace and quiet when you need to. Conversely, the large living rooms and, of course, the outdoor seating area provide plenty of room for parties and chatting into the night. The interiors are pleasingly minimalist, with hardwood floors and luxury furnishings giving the space an air of sophistication as well as comfort. Downtown Charleston is within easy walking distance – all its bars and restaurants are just a ten-minute stroll away, so heading out for dinner and drinks is as simple as walking down the street.

The house is in a quiet resort preserve with a protected wildlife forest between it and the mainland. With this location, you’ll feel agreeably separate from big city life. But at just twenty kilometres from crossing state lines into Savannah, Georgia, you can discover boldly flavoured seafood, antebellum architecture, and quirky shops – although it’s unlikely you’ll want to stray so far from your sanctuary.

Days take on a slower pace on Hilton Head Island and this villa-style home is perfect for unwinding. A beachy vibe runs throughout, with wooden floorboards that can easily be swept after sandy feet run across them, and slanted, high ceilings to provide a cool relief from the outdoor heat. Keep an eye on the whole family in the open living, kitchen and dining room, as they play card games in the alcove or enjoy movie nights piled on the sofas. The home is on the edge of a golf course and you can watch the action from the front deck, complete with a barbecue for rustling up some grilled delights if you get hungry. For peace and quiet, the upstairs master bedroom has a private balcony, perfect for curling up with a book. Whether you’re here to explore its colonial architecture, tuck into excellent Creole and BBQ food or savour the blossoming cocktail scene, you’re going to need somewhere to stay smack bang in the heart of the buzz. This home offers this plus elegantly designed spaces, a fully equipped kitchen and – best of all – en-suite shower rooms in al four bedrooms. The open-plan living and dining area is on the cosy side and ideal for a group of four to six guests, with plush grey sofas, velvet bar stools and a humming vintage-style ceiling fan for that quintessential Southern vibe.

Located just outside of Charleston's historic downtown area and close to the shops, restaurants and bars of King Street, this home is in an enviable position within the city. And just like its surroundings, the building itself is steeped in history. Built in 1885, it boasts picturesque porches, hardwood floors and a crisp colour scheme. The kitchen is eye-catching with its bright green cabinets, and offers a bold contrast to the elegant Art Deco-inspired living area. Our favourite element, however, is the veranda. No trip to the southern states is complete without at least some of the relaxation taking place on a traditional covered porch, and this home offers a charming one where you can sit and while away the hours with a cool drink.

You're also just a twenty-minute walk from the Charleston Historic District, with its fascinating landmarks, and a short drive will take you to the sands of Folly Beach.

Stylish and practical, this two-bedroom apartment is the ideal base for exploring all of Charlotte's sights. You'll love relaxing each evening in the open-plan living space in front of the Smart TV and cooking up meals in the fully-equipped kitchen. Each bedroom has its own en-suite, and there's even a dedicated workspace just in case you need to catch up on work emails during your trip. The best thing about this apartment, though, has to be the shared facilities – take a dip in the pool, relax on the terrace, or get competitive in the games room. You're just a 20-minute bus ride from the historic centre of Charlotte, and we would recommend visiting Mint Museum Uptown and Levine Museum of the New South for a dose of culture and history. Elsewhere, Charlotte is known for its sports events – catch a Hornets NBA game at the Spectrum Center or soak up the high-octane atmosphere of NASCAR at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Located on the second floor of a restored wood-fronted home in the heart of Charleston’s Cannonborough-Elliotborough neighbourhood, this home boasts an enviable position and charming interiors.
