Come sun or snow, this charming timber retreat offers the perfect mountain getaway high in the Italian Alps. Located on the ground floor of a traditional alpine building in Livigno, the apartment is designed to be as flexible as possible, with a sleeping arrangement that's sure to suit.

Up to four people can be comfortably accommodated here, with two of the guests choosing between either a double sofa bed or two pull-down bunk beds that emerge from the wall, with two further guests in the tranquil main bedroom.

A compact kitchen contains everything you might need to whip up apres-ski sustenance sat around the dining table before exploring the traffic-free streets in the centre of the resort, a couple of kilometres up the road – with a free ski bus linking the town. Interestingly, the area has held duty-free status since the 16th century, meaning your money goes that bit further.

Your host can provide free baby equipment and pets are welcome, making it an ideal choice for families. Spoiler alert – you’ve got far-reaching views of the slopes and Alpine ski runs from the breakfast table of this chic apartment, so you know exactly what’s in store each day. It’s on the outskirts of Livigno where gondolas and ski lifts await to whisk you up the mountainside. A heated ski locker can keep your ski boots and salopettes warm and dry, ready for another day on the powder. In summer, the hiking trails up into the Alps reward with stunning views and you can fuel up for big walks with a view of an Alpine meadow, thanks to a stone-built barbecue and dining area in the vast garden. Heading inside, the first thing that caught our attention was the picture-frame window by the dining table, framing the mountain view like a work of art. The sitting room is tucked in a cosy little wood-clad corner for that cabin-chic feel and long windows let the sunlight stream in. A sleek black kitchen hides everything you need for apres-ski meals and morning coffees before the slopes. Bedrooms are tucked beneath wooden ceilings across both floors and the added bonus is the steam room for sore muscles.

Inside, it's a blend of period features like tall ceilings and a marble fireplace, with a  modern twist. And while shades of terracotta, cream and grey rule in the open-plan living area, the bedroom's all about green and white. There's a well kitted-out, contemporary kitchen so cooking at home won't be a problem – but you're just steps away from some great places to eat and drink. And it's easy to explore further afield, even without a car, with the train station and ferry boats both nearby.

Views of Lake Como don't come much better than this – and neither do penthouse locations. You're within walking distance of Fiumelatte for evening meals and the train station (just 300 metres away) for trips to nearby historic Varenna. Rather travel by boat? Hop on the ferry (a three-kilometre drive away) to glitzy Bellagio and beyond. Back home, the main bedroom suite, with its dressing area and Jacuzzi for two, more than delivers. However, it's worth noting that the headspace in the mezzanine second bedroom is low and better suited for children. But for those jaw-dropping views from the private terrace, we can forgive that.

Nestled on the slopes of Bormio Ski Area, this bright and welcoming home is perfect for those looking for a snowy wonderland, where skiing is a daily occurrence and evenings are meant to be spent snuggled up by the fire with a belly-warming drink in hand. Spend your mornings watching the sunrise from your private balcony, sipping on a fresh cup of coffee and just letting the world pass you by, before grabbing your skis and heading out onto the slopes for a day shredding up the snow in the most exhilarating way possible. 

When the day is over and you've had all the adrenaline-filled fun you can, head on down to the town of Bormio for a sumptuous meal and the perfect glass of wine (we highly recommend a hearty bowl of Taròz). Soak in the local culture as you walk around this beautiful town, before making your way home for a hot, bubbly dip in the spa bath, or a relaxing five minutes in the sauna and steam room.

When it comes to a stay on the slopes, you can’t get much more charming or convenient than this chic chalet-style home. The white walls and natural woods of the interior design are as pretty as the Swiss mountains outside, and if you fancy a glimpse of the real thing, just step out onto your private balcony and take in the view of the slopes. During the summer months you can hit the hiking trails, and in the winter there’s a free shuttle bus to the ski runs of Corviglia Piz Nair, where you can shred some powder. Or you could just grab a hot chocolate, bundle up on the sofa, and spend the day watching the snowflakes drift down over the peaks – we won't judge you, the view is utterly incredible.

Head out to the private balcony in all its traditional ski-chalet splendour for an evening tipple in the fresh alpine air.  An interior of pinewood eaves, a chalet-style kitchen and lightwood flooring blend in with the evergreen forests that cloak the mountains outside, and there’s a comfortable murphy bed that can be pulled down in the living room for additional guests. Just outside the building, a cross-country ski trail takes you past stunning alpine vistas and in the town of Lenzerheide you’ll find a handful of ski lifts to whisk you up to the slopes – the closest being a ten-minute walk away. Part of a hotel complex (but totally self-contained), guests here have access to the outdoor thermal pool with its water fountains, a shared indoor swimming pool and the hotel’s boot and equipment room.

Compact yet stylish, this apartment in the picturesque lakeside town of Lugano is ideal for a couple or solo traveller. In twenty minutes on foot, you can be at the shimmering lakeside, where boats bob in docks and summer swims are a relief from the heat. Sample the delights of Swiss-Italian cuisine in the pavement restaurants of Piazza della Riforma, a twenty-five-minute walk away, or cook for yourself with fresh produce from the farmer’s market, twenty minutes away on foot.

Within the building you’ve got access to a gym, lounges and a co-working space, making this an ideal apartment for business and leisure. While the apartment itself is a stylish space of stone floors, a midnight-blue feature wall and ceramics and pot plants dotted here and there. The kitchenette has everything you need for a quick meal and, come bedtime, a murphy bed folds down to transform the living room into a bedroom.

Lucky Lakeside

Those who love the great outdoors will have similar feelings about this apartment in the Silvaplana region of Switzerland. It's about five minutes' walk from a ski lift, half that time to walking routes through a forest and just over half an hour in the car to a windsurfing school on the edge of Lake Silvaplana. However you choose to spend your time here, the home itself will have you well rested ahead of the following day's excursions. The wooden beams and vaulted ceilings feel quintessentially Swiss, as does the open-hearth fireplace in the living room for warming up cold fingers. In the same space, there's a door leading to a balcony, which, should the weather be on your side, is a lovely spot for breakfast, thanks in no small part to the spectacular mountain view.

Eternal Recurrence

This well-appointed apartment serves up some beautiful views over Lake Como and the mountains beyond. It's a bright and functional space with sliding patio doors that opens up the home. The furnished terrace is a lovely spot for alfresco meals and Aperols in the sunshine. Downstairs, you'll also have free access to the shared swimming pool for cooling off. At capacity, two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the communal living area – though there are no curtains, so if you're hoping to enjoy a lie-in, you might want to pack an eye mask. It's also worth noting that it takes a short drive to reach the surrounding provinces.
