This smart apartment is in the heart of Meiringen in Switzerland, close to the setting of Sherlock Holmes’ infamous (spoiler alert) fictional – and faked – death at the Reichenbach Falls. The town has taken to its mysterious connection well, building a Sherlock Holmes Museum in a picturesque former church that fans of the sleuth will want to pay a visit to. For those visiting the area hoping for more skiing than sleuthing, you're also in luck. The ski region of Meiringen-Hasliberg has a total of fourteen lifts and twenty ski runs and is a kilometre away, while further afield you’re within easy reach of Axalp, Schilthorn and Jungfrau. This cosy chalet shows off the idyllic views in every direction and makes an ideal base for anyone exploring the region. You'll feel right at home in this rustic hideaway, with the open-hearth fireplace, squishy sofas and wooden panelling creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It's the perfect place to kick off your snow boots and unwind with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book.

Our favourite spot to soak up the sunshine (and the scenery) is the deck off the main bedroom. Enjoy a cup of coffee there in the morning before rustling up breakfast in the kitchen, then grab your skis and snowboards and hit the slopes. When your toes feel frosty and your muscles are sore, head back home to a roaring fire and some delicious cheese fondue around the oak dining table before snuggling up for a family movie night in the lounge.

We were sold on those views of Lake Maggiore alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the panoramic sunny terrace and newly refurbished interiors of this townhouse. As we're finickity, the downstairs living space feels a little bijou, but with that covered panoramic balcony outside, we don't think you'll mind. And kids will love the novelty of the top-floor mezzanine bedroom with a TV den to spill out into. Perched amidst the hillsides, 700 metres above the lake, you're quietly removed from the bustle. But when it's time to dip your toes into lakeside living, Stresa's grand promenades and history-rich streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

Big baths await to soak tired muscles in bedrooms and bathrooms, our favourite being the stretched tub in the master suite – we're pretty sure there's room for two. If you're visiting in summer, a spacious garden and terrace furniture is perfect for catching the sunset, and if you need a break from all that cheese, you can fire up the barbecue.

This is a spacious apartment located in the charming town of Cunardo, perfectly situated between Varese and Lugano. This recently renovated second-floor retreat offers a panoramic view of the town and the picturesque valley below. The open-concept living area features a well-equipped kitchen and a cozy living room, providing the ideal space to relax and take in the stunning surroundings. The sleeping area consists of two bedrooms, one double and one single, as well as a modern bathroom. Additionally, there is a mezzanine level that can be used as an extra living room or bedroom if needed. The apartment is thoughtfully designed with all the necessary amenities including wifi, a courtesy line, ironing facilities, and a hairdryer. Whether you're visiting for work or leisure, this provides a clean and comfortable environment to make you feel right at home.

The Magnificent Mase

While this chalet in Rairettes was built in 2013, its wooden walls, arched ceilings and slate roof make it feel quintessentially old-school Swiss. There's a smart twist, however, with floor-to-ceiling windows at the front of the home that give unparalleled views over the snow-capped mountains. Whether you're cooking in the pine kitchen, cuddled round the feature fireplace or squashed onto the crushed velvet sofa, eyes will invariably gaze out over the magnificent vistas. In the summer, it's out to the home's balcony and grassy garden for barbecues, alfresco feasts, and even a spot of tanning on the loungers if it's warm enough. Mountain trails – both hiking and skiing – can be found not far from the plot for days exploring ridges and new pastures. When you're done, head back to the plush pad for evening soaks in the deep bathtub or a session in the private sauna.

Clouds Reach

At the foot of the magnificent Matterhorn mountain, high above the clouds, the fresh air and general life in Zermatt is unlike anywhere else. Getting around here means hopping on milk float-style taxis, electric buses, cable cars, and your own skis. With such picturesque scenery, you’ll find yourself stopping for regular glances at the snowy peaks, taking in their changing moods throughout the day. Whether you’re zooming down pristine slopes, or hiking Sound-of-Music-style meadows, returning to this apartment is a treat. Inside, it’s got real Alpine charm, with oak walls, an open-hearth fireplace, rust-red cow print sofas, and plenty of comfy cushions, rugs, and throws. Stunning views are what caught our eye at this lakefront apartment. The wraparound balcony is the perfect place to enjoy them, whether you're tucking into an alfresco breakfast or savouring a sundowner. Although the interiors may not stack up to the surrounding scenery, they are practical and comfortable. There's also a sofa bed for two, but the space is a tad snug with it in use. Location-wise, Campione d'Italia is an Italian enclave entirely in Switzerland. Gourmet restaurants and local shops are nearby, while the other villages along Lake Como can be reached by ferry or car.
