The Emerald Portrait’s location is its absolute superpower. Located just five minutes away from Alexanderplatz, you’re in the pulsating heart of Berlin with lots to do on your doorstep. The building itself is also rich in history. A former military hospital turned office for the Russian secret service, it now contains several living units, all with elegant bathrooms and comfortable beds. We also love that it has a balcony with charming views of a typical Mitte street.

Those who are particular about their design will fall head over heels for this penthouse apartment. For a start, the exterior is rather unique, as it's a new wooden development adapted respectfully on top of an industrial building dating back to 1905. The interior is a shining beacon of clean minimalism, in which every item has been selected carefully for maximum impact. The artwork on the walls, for example, is curated by different galleries and artists, and, as such, changes quite regularly. The kitchen, too, has been hidden away in a cabinet, so there's nothing but sleek white walls when it's not in use, and the linens are made from pure organic cotton. Sustainability is at the core of every piece of furniture and fixture within this home, with each piece carefully selected to have minimal environmental impact. Out through the glass doors — which are nothing but generous when it comes to natural light — you'll find the roof terrace, on which there's plenty of seating and a range of plants chosen for their fragrances, from bedstraw and thyme to wall pepper. Located in the quieter north of the Mitte district, there are lots of green spaces and historical curiosities to be found nearby, including the Silent Green Kulturquartier three minutes' walk away and Humbolthain state park only a quarter of an hour away.

It’s easy to see that Mise en Scene is a loved home. A renovated Altbau, Stefan has poured his heart and soul into creating a space that feels insanely welcoming that's also brimming of character. We can’t get enough of the Crittall-style wall partitioning (which reminds us of New York lofts), as well as all the bohemian touches (plants, rugs, vintage furniture). It’s located in Kreuzberg, so there are plenty of things to do nearby – but we won’t hold it against you if you end up spending your entire Berlin stay cosying up in this home, we would have done the same!

Mise en Scene

Set in what used to be a former military hospital/office for the Russian secret service, this now modern apartment is swimming in history. The colour scheme is kept in grey tones for a calm, soothing feel, which we love and the arched windows allow plenty of natural light into the open-plan living space. Cleverly designed, although it’s not big (it’s more of a studio actually), it feels spacious with the great use of a dividing wall in the centre of the room. The exposed brickwork and industrial-chic lighting keep things stylish. Plus, the skyscraper views over Mitte are quite something too. But the real highlight of this home is its enviable location. Almost impossible to beat, Alexanderplatz is very close by (about five minutes away), so you won’t have to walk for long to experience some of Berlin’s most popular attractions – speaking of, the intriguing Museum Island is also less than a fifteen-minute stroll from home.

Making Waves is one of a kind. Situated just behind Berlin’s cluster of galleries, it’s also within walking distance to the architectural masterpiece that is Gleisdreieck Park. On top of being fully equipped (the kitchen is a particular favourite of ours), we also love how stylish it is. Much of the furniture is custom made for the space, and it has a tranquil atmosphere that we can’t get over. As a bonus, it has Sonos speakers in every single room – this includes the bathroom for all the people who enjoy a good sing along session in the shower.

Your host, Kitty, is an illustrator and this beautiful, luminescent apartment is her studio. We love how she’s transformed it into an elegant living space with more character than you can shake a paintbrush at. From her original art above the bed to her easels and paints sitting alongside an extraordinary collection of books and ornaments, this space is an art lover’s haven and a truly unique way in which to experience the city. The light here, too, is dazzling, pouring in through the floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors that lead out onto a private balcony. Sit here with your morning coffee and one of the many books, and relish the tranquillity of your inner courtyard setting. With a luxurious green-tiled tub (and the bathroom's underfloor heating) to retreat to after a day of exploring Berlin by foot, this home truly offers a canvas for a blissfully relaxing time. Outside of your home, you’ve got the Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood on your doorstep packed with independent eateries, design boutiques, bike rentals, supermarkets, public parks and cosy coffee shops. Visit Mauerpark’s Sunday flea market (a twenty-five-minute walk), check out the KulturBrauerei for hip shops and music clubs (a fifteen-minute walk) or indulge in some retail therapy along trendy Kastanienallee and Alte Schönhauser Allee (both a twenty-minute stroll). Designed in a modern Japandi style, this centrally located apartment is ideal for those looking for a calm stay within easy reach of the city’s most notable sights. While one guest will need to sleep on the sofa bed at full capacity, a Sonos sound system, a coffee and matcha station and a courtyard-facing bedroom are nice touches here that caught our eye. And the dedicated desk space makes this quiet home perfect for those needing to work remotely. You won’t find a TV here, but you’ll hardly notice given the countless things to see and do nearby, including Mauerpark, the Wasserturm Prenzlauer Berg and plenty of public transport options to take you to all corners of the city. 


The Zen Tree

It’s easy to see that Photographic Memory is a cherished home. Brimming with plants, personal trinkets, and artworks made by a friend of the host’s grandmother, you can sense the calmness and love as soon as you step through the front door. While it’s not in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg, it's only five minutes away from Mauerpark. And there are also plenty of eateries, cosy coffee shops and design boutiques within walking distance.

Now, where to begin? This home is a real gem. Located in an old jelly factory by the Spree (the views are amazing), it’s a must if you want to stay somewhere special. Arthur is an architect – his love of the craft and the building’s rich history is evident in the beautiful renovation. He also collects photography and you’ll be able to see some curated examples throughout the home. If that’s not enough for you, it’s also located in Kreuzberg, a neighbourhood known for its lively atmosphere and abundance of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops.

Step through the front door to be welcomed by fresh, open spaces, comfortable and welcoming furniture, and a sense of the genuine love that has gone into this home.

As the apartment is close to Berlin Nordbahnhof, guests are extremely well-connected to the rest of the city, and is perfect for those preferring to use public transport, which we have to admit is the ideal way to travel during a city escape. After breakfast and the day's first crisp cup of coffee, head out to experience Berlin culture and life at its finest, with visits to Museum Island, the iconic Berlin Wall, and Brandenburg Gate, while a day spent in the city centre shopping, sightseeing, and sampling delicious local delicacies can have you out from dusk 'til dawn. We highly recommend trying the local schnitzel with a hearty pint of Hofbrau Oktoberfest.

Found right by the Spree, The Greenery is in an excellent location. You’re within walking distance to many of Berlin’s cultural offerings (Museum Island is only twenty minutes away), along with lots of famous night clubs (if that’s your thing). The living room feels incredibly lively – we loved the abundance of tropical green plants and host Paul’s attention to detail. And the kitchen is wonderful too – we can only imagine the kind of delicious meals that you’ll want to cook while staying in this home.

The Greenery

Housed in a grand Beaux-Arts building typical of the bustling Tiergarten district, this pristine serviced apartment offers hotel-like comforts with the privacy of your own home. Downstairs, there's a helpful concierge should you need anything – from booking a table at one of the city's most happening restaurants to organising for a continental breakfast to be delivered to your apartment each day. Upstairs, you'll love the bright, lofty feel of the home, thanks to the high ceilings and dual aspect windows, and the quiet courtyard-facing bedrooms to help bank a peaceful night's sleep. Over in the main living space, the massive dining table is the perfect spot to come together for lazy breakfasts as you hatch plans for the day ahead. And the daily housekeeping will keep things spick and span while you're out and about – which we suspect you'll be doing rather a lot of here. There's a myriad of great bistros, street food, and bakeries in the streets below, all within walking distance. Or hop on one of the city bikes, handily parked right outside the apartment building, for a morning's jaunt over the river to Tiergarten Park for picnicking and frisbee tossing - it's the local's favourite place to be.

With an abundance of coworking spaces, quirky cafes and art galleries nearby, this home near Rosenthaler Platz is certainly in a lively neighbourhood. Ideal for groups of friends or families, the kitchen is well-equipped, the bathroom is fresh and functional, and the bedrooms are airy and bright. It's not bursting with character, but it does have plenty of design strengths like the funky kaleidoscope artwork, the sunny den leading onto the little balcony and, of course, the wonderful views.

This stylish apartment has a distinct 1960s feel to it. And the best of all, you ask? It’s all happening inside a charming Altbau, with high ceilings and big windows galore. Natural light pours into the spacious communal areas and bedrooms, combing with a mint green colour scheme and an abundance of luscious houseplants to create a calm and breathable apartment to unwind. For those keeping one eye on work during their stay, you'll notice a light-filled desk space to set up a home office. Full of funky patterns, retro tiled flooring and chic decor, you'll find the sociable open-plan space a great spot to hang out with friends and family after a day spent sightseeing around Berlin. Better still, step out onto the private balcony with a glass of something bubbly and watch how the locals go about their daily lives below. The location is as central as it gets, with Alexanderplatz just around the corner (about five minutes on foot) – and if you feel like exploring Museum Island, it’s less than a short fifteen-minute stroll from this crowd-pleasing pad.

With high ceilings, Danish furniture, a balcony facing the Spree and walls filled with Arthur’s own photography, it’s a must if you’re looking for a stylish base from which to explore Berlin. Begin mornings on the L-shaped couch with a freshly brewed coffee before serving up a traditional German breakfast in the dining area. When you’re ready to explore, you’ll find the Wall Museum a fifteen-minute walk from your doorstep. It’ll take you eighteen minutes on the bus to reach Treptower Park – a local favourite for picnics in the summertime. To dive into the city’s history, catch the U-Bahn to Checkpoint Charlie and Brandenburger Tor. And when evening falls, hang about in your trendy Kreuzberg locale – it’s filled with lively restaurants, bars and hidden nightlife spots.

Designed with consciousness and sustainability at its heart, this penthouse suite in Berlin's Mitte district certainly wows in terms of location and interiors. From a first glimpse, as you walk through the door, it is clear that the consistent use of wood as a key material was a well-thought-out design choice that brings us back to nature despite the home's city location. 

Contemporary mid-century styles find influence from Scandinavia, while warm neutral tones create a soothing space to relax after the day's adventures exploring the city. Floods of light gently enter the main living space through the floor-to-ceiling glass fronts – providing the conditions for clear thinking and new visions. 

As you wake up here each morning, take the time to admire the carefully selected modern artwork with a cup of coffee in hand – the pieces are by local artists and therefore change regularly. Or why not start your days out on the balcony roof terrace amidst the crisp morning air?

With a seamless transition into each space, we particularly love the hidden kitchen, which can be closed away entirely by shutting the cupboard doors – or presented as somewhat of an art installation when left open. 

From the living area to the bedroom and the en-suite bathroom, the natural light flows and injects life into the space. Underfloor heating ensures your toes will be kept warm during the winter months. And the building's inner courtyard (brimming with plants such as thyme, wall pepper, meadow sage, fragrant bedstraw, and raspberry bushes) will welcome you to enjoy tranquil moments outside when the weather is kind.

Dry Humour is one of a kind. Located inside what used to be a brewery, the building is steeped in history. We adore the high ceilings and arched windows, both of which remind us of a different time. It also comes with a kitchen that’s very clearly made for cooking – the butcher’s block countertop is as cool as it is practical. The immediate area is on the more peaceful side, but you’re only a ten-minute walk from some of Berlin’s most charming hangouts – including Viktoriapark (one of our favourite parks in the city).

Dry Humour

Donja is an artist, so it’s no wonder that Flashdance has an artistic flair. Located in charming Prenzlauer Berg, it’s one of those homes that appears a lot bigger than it actually is, largely due to its light colour palette and sophisticated design solutions. The minimalist kitchen is great for cooking breakfast before a day of sightseeing – it is worth noting that there’s no oven or microwave. And as an added bonus, Donja displays some of her own artworks in this home too.

This minimalist apartment sure makes a statement. It's on the top floor of a building dating back to 1905, and the wooden beams, skylights, and glass-walled bedrooms give the whole place an industrial ambience. There's a dappled dining nook where you can enjoy breakfast – better yet, visit the coffee shop downstairs for a morning brew. We love the large skylights, too. Location-wise, Wedding is a lively neighbourhood with a hodge podge of restaurants, shops, and bars to discover. Keen to explore further afield? Hop on the subway, just a five-minute walk away, and set off on an adventure.

An interesting fact about this apartment building is that the Berlin Wall would have run straight through when it was up. As such, it's a great location to see both sides of the city's history and you've got a great vantage point from the top floor balcony, which faces towards Mauerpark. Turning your back on the skyline for a moment, you'll be greeted by a bright and modern home full of fascinating curios — the intricately carved wooden bed in the master bedroom, for instance, came from a Buddhist Temple in Bali and there's abstract artwork hung on the walls that will have you stroking your chin. If it gives you the inspiration to go out and see an exhibition, Kulturbrauerei is only fifteen minutes' walk away. However, if you just want to flit between restaurants and bars, a five-minute stroll will take you to vibrant Zionskirchplatz and Kastanieenallee, two charming squares packed full of places to sit and watch the world go by.

Furnished with a homely mix of mismatched pieces, funky artwork and pops of colour, this apartment is a cool-looking space that’s a pleasure to hang out in. The living area is generous enough to entertain you and a couple of friends, while the large couch with footstool calls for relaxing under a blanket after a busy day exploring your buzzy Mitte neighbourhood. Pull up a blue velvet chair to the dining table and tuck into a traditional German breakfast or munch on a brötchen in the fresh air on your private balcony. Grab a coffee-to-go from a nearby café and take the leisurely thirty-minute stroll to Museum Island. Or, hop on the S-Bahn for five minutes to the unmistakable Brandenburg Gate and leafy Tiergarten – perfect for picnics in the sunshine.

Audiophile

With its high ceilings and big windows, this home has a typical Berliner Altbau vibe. It’s located in Prenzlauer Berg, so you’re in good hands when it comes to things to do – there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and coffee shops close by. One of our favourite parks, Mauerpark, is also just around the corner. It’s worth noting that it’s a studio – so it’s definitely on the smaller side. But it’s well-equipped for a comfortable stay, especially if you’re looking to stay in a bustling neighbourhood.

Sage looks like it’s stuck in a bohemian moment of the 1960s – and we're here for it. Positively brimming with retro furniture, hip artwork, and a vibrant colour palette, it’s like breathing in a breath of fresh air. We love that all of this is happening inside an old Altbau building, with big windows and high ceilings, allowing plenty of natural light to stream through the large bedrooms and spacious communal areas. It's a real crowd-pleasing home, with three brightly coloured bedrooms, each with their own eclectic prints, funky patterns and green houseplants. Set against the backdrop of Mitte, it’s in an excellent location for exploring too. Alexanderplatz is around the corner (a five-minute walk away) – and if you feel like exploring Museum Island, it’s less than fifteen minutes from home by foot.

Sage

The first thing we noticed about this home is how much natural light it gets (courtesy of the huge windows, of course). Secondly, the bohemian vibe gives it a relaxed feel, with lots of space for contemplation and unwinding after a long day out. There is a balcony (which is always a plus), but if you feel like going for a walk, we can also recommend nearby Volkspark am Weinberg. Location-wise, it’s phenomenal – you’re in Mitte with easy access to Berlin’s city centre, and charming Prenzlauer Berg is also nearby if you feel like exploring a more peaceful and local part of the city.

In Palms We Trust

The Juggler is a cachet of Berlin cool. Funky and playful in one, this place sports artistic wallpapers and well-curated splashes of colour. The hosts love Berlin and they’re not afraid to show it – the organic Berlin-made toiletries are the icing on the cake. The immediate area is a little touristy, but there are lots of wonderful restaurants right by Zionkirchplatz.

The Juggler

Animalia is one of those homes that manages to tell a story. All the artworks are original pieces made by the host and his father, and the beautiful vintage-style cast iron chairs are sourced from his uncle’s bar. The space could be a bit tight for six guests, but it would be perfect for a family or a small group of friends coming to experience the city.

Bright and minimalist, it's a home with a spectacular view too. On the top floor and boasting not one but two spacious terraces, you can gaze across the rooftops and make the most of the evening sunshine in the summer months. The nearby church makes for an impressive backdrop and if you're hooked on views you can even visit it on a Sunday and climb its tall tower.

Inside, white walls and pine floors mix with sloping ceilings, plentiful house plants and little dashes of character, to make for a relaxing, stylish city home. You'll have a bedroom sleeping up to three and the living room easily converts into a second sleeping space – although you'd be sacrificing your indoor starting. Buzzing Arkonaplatz and its popular flea market is only a short walk from your door and this lovely part of the city is packed with great bars and restaurants.

At Balances, you’ll find industrial-inspired exposed brick and pipework, which the host has lovingly combined with minimalist furnishings that give this home a New York-like appeal. It is situated on the lower ground floor, but with plenty of natural light and its location on a quiet street, we’re willing to look past this minor detail. More importantly, Balances sits smack dab between some of Berlin’s most famous, and most important, sites. You can easily walk around this part of town visiting modern art galleries, historic museums or the Berlin Wall Memorial.

With a bohemian 1960s flair and lots of colours, Rosemary is a cool blast from the past. Chic and retro, it’s got lots of character – and we love that it still manages to feel very personal. With a funky mix of global influences, The Ventriloquist is Berlin chic to the bone. It’s easy to see that a lot of time and effort has been put into picking the right decorations – from the safari-style wall decorations to the tribal print rugs. There’s also a projector screen in the living room, encouraging you to stay in, slow down and watch a film. The immediate area might be a little too touristy for some, but there are also plenty of nearby places we love – one of them being Weinberg Park, the perfect spot to enjoy a sunny afternoon.
