It's impossible not to fall in love with this stunning three-bedroom home, a luxurious villa situated on the coast of Spain's sunshine capital, the Costa del Sol (it's all in the name).

Indoors, an open living/dining room is blessed with vast windows and French doors that allow plenty of natural light to illuminate the space. One of mid-century mastermind Frank Lloyd Wright's favourite additions, clerestory windows, are set well above eye level to maximise every available beam. When the heat of the summer starts to fade, a large open fire makes for cosy nights with friends and family, adding a welcoming atmosphere to meals in the elevated dining room that overlooks the space.

The villa boasts not one but three cosy seating areas – enough for one per bedroom – while outside, there's a Zen patio and relaxing Thai house that's perfect for a spot of morning meditation. If you prefer your mindfulness a little more green-fingered, help yourself to organic vegetables from the garden or pick fruit straight off the trees in the orchard.

Back to the sea-facing side, you'll find a raised terrace with more seating, a full wet bar, and a barbecue. From here, you can relax with views over the pool and croquet lawn towards the Med. 

With the sea so close you can taste it, you won't have to travel far for a day at the beach. While the interiors are kept fairly minimal, the townhouse offers a functional space for a convenient and fuss-free stay here. Just ten minutes by car into central Benalmadena and its marina, when you're not cooking in the open-plan kitchen, you'll find plenty of restaurants and shops to discover.

Just a stone's throw away from El Higueron Beach, this conveniently located apartment puts you within proximity of the town centre's shops and restaurants too. Yet, the views alone make the apartment truly stand out. The panorama at sunset is particularly memorable, so why not barbecue in the evenings and gather around the alfresco dining area? Up on the communal rooftop, you'll also have access to a unique swimming pool and sun terrace shared with other guests on-site. With air conditioning, you can take advantage of sleeping in comfortable temperatures during the summer. However, it's worth bearing in mind at full capacity, two members of the group will be sleeping on the double sofa bed in the living area.

Just a short stroll from the beach, we found this sprawling villa perfect for a family of sun lovers. Poolside, with its sea views, is where to be, although the lack of shaded seating means you'll need to be extra generous with the sun cream. And while the inside's simple decor isn't anything to write home about, the open-plan living space is a nice touch – perfect for coming together as a group. There are several shaded balconies here, so you can continue to enjoy the heat with an afternoon cocktail. Come dinner time, you'll find Playa Bonita's restaurants and bars are within walking distance.

Sandwiched between Andalusian mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, this villa has a truly idyllic location and while many properties would make this gorgeous scenery its main lure, that's not the case here. Put this home in the most unremarkable of settings and it would still wow.

The peaceful outdoor space is a big reason for this. On hot days – of which there are few around these parts – you can cool off in the swimming pool and dry off on one of the surrounding loungers, before getting round to cooking up fellow guests a smoky feast on the barbecue.

When you finally head inside, you won't be disappointed. The high ceilings and large windows make the interior feel bright and expansive, while there's an eclectic array of artworks and mementoes dotted about the place that adds a bit of character. As well as looking the part, it's also really rather cosy – come evening time, why not treat yourself to a soak in the sunken bath before snuggling up next to the fireplace?

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, the golden sands of Playa de Carvajal take less than five minutes to reach in the car, while you can head into the mountains in around ten minutes' drive. The apartment itself is modern and practical, but it lacks some character. That said, there’s a bright open-plan living room for relaxing and a lovely sea view to admire while you’re preparing a tapas dinner. We think this location makes for a great Costa del Sol base – golf courses, sandy beaches, and well-known beach restaurants are all within easy reach.

Every Summer Dream 

Just a short walk from the beach and seafront promenade, this apartment is the ideal sunny getaway. Open the sliding doors and let the sun and sea air in as you gather on the dining terrace for breakfast. The home can sleep up to five, but three people will be sleeping on a bunk bed in the second bedroom which is only suitable for younger children.
