With a fantastic address, just off the Paseo de la Castellana, this apartment has a wealth of attractions nearby. The upmarket districts of Salamanca, Chamberi and Justicia are all close, so you'll have plenty of fine restaurants, chic boutiques and art galleries to enjoy. With one of Madrid's main avenues on your doorstep, the slight downside is you will hear some street noise here, but it's easily fixed with some earplugs if you're a light sleeper. We have to say, we love the views over Plaza Villa de París from this home. The kitchen is well-equipped, so you can cook some homemade meals or let your host arrange a private chef to create some of your favourite tapas dishes.

This apartment is located in the Malasaña-Universidad barrio in Madrid. The neighbourhood is known for its mix of 18th-century architecture and contemporary street art. The stunning sights of the Royal Palace of Madrid and the Plaza Mayor are both eighteen-minutes away from this home using public transport. While Casa de Campo – where you will find a zoo and aquarium, an amusement park, tennis courts, an outdoor public swimming pool and much more – is just under an hour away on public transport.

Keen to be in the hustle and bustle? This apartment, just a ten-minute stroll from Gran Vía, may be a great choice. It's easy to get to all the landmarks on foot or by metro, and there are a lot of bars and restaurants nearby. Unsurprisingly it can get a tad noisy – but that's part of the city experience. We love the bright living area, and the two snug bedrooms channel Spanish sunshine with their yellow paint. Size-wise, it's rather compact but still comfortable – just note that it's on the second floor and lacks a lift.

Calle Almagro is probably one of the most iconic streets in Chamberí. Historically, the elites have fled central Madrid in hopes of finding a quieter vibe in this neighbourhood, leading to low-key chic architecture, great restaurants, and bars. Mucha's Jungle has an atypical interior design that reminded us of a Soho townhouse. The wooden floor is a piece of art on its own, and there are lots of beautiful design details dotted around. In spite of the fact that it looks a lot bigger, this is a small attic home, which is perfect for all who thrive in pretty, cosy spots.

Just a short stroll from Calle Pozano, this apartment transports you to the vibrant heart of Madrid. From tapas bars and cafes to Ríos Rosas Park, you’ll find everything you could need within walking distance – including great public transport links. This is also a sweet base for remote workers with dedicated desks and plenty of space across the open-plan living room and dining room. There is also a Smart TV and a vinyl record player – setting the tone for relaxing evenings at home.

Ventura Rodriguez metro station is a short walk away, though you can also stroll to Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace in about twenty minutes. Back home, there's a practical yet cosy living space. Cosy but well-equipped, as a party of four it’s worth noting that the sofa bed will be in use for two guests, but it’s an ideal base for families or friends who don’t mind sharing the space. And for business travellers, the desk space is sure to be a bonus. Locally, you’ll find eateries lining the streets serving up authentic cuisine, and a whole host of museums for when you fancy a spot of culture.

This home puts Chamberí's diverse bars and shops on your doorstep. Moments from the Paseo de la Castellana, you'll have excellent public transport links too. While we love the bright interior, it may be a better pick for light packers, as there isn't a lot of space in the bedrooms for storage. It's a shame the dining area doesn't seat six, though the kitchen offers another table for two. How about sunset-watching on the balcony after a day spent exploring Madrid?

Lying between Madrid's sought-after Salamanca and the elegant Almagro district – this home has a fantastic address. Known as the "Golden Mile",  Ortega y Gasset Street (twenty minutes on foot) has an array of fashion boutiques, art galleries and Michelin-starred restaurants. It's around the same distance to El Retiro Park with its pretty boating lake. Or, a six-minute stroll will take you to Almagro, with its embassies, museums and upscale Spanish, Italian, and Japanese eateries.

Neither the kitchen nor some of the bedrooms are the biggest, but it has all the essentials for a hassle-free stay. Just note that though there's space for five, we think it's a better fit for four.

With a big and luminous living room that transforms into a home cinema, Lovefield is a great stay for those who like to strike a balance between spending their time sightseeing and relaxing at home. The neighbouring streets of Chueca are filled with great bars and restaurants, but they're also well-connected to the city centre. One of the bedrooms in Lovefield doesn't have a window, but otherwise, the design is well-thought-through and coherent.
