You'll also find an original stone motif and lattice, dating all the way back to 1882. This home seamlessly blends historic features with modern-day living to create a space that's not only inviting but has an incredible sense of whimsy.

The blue and white theme is present throughout the home, adding pretty pops of colour that contrast beautifully with the terracotta brickwork and patio. This remarkable home dates back to the late 19th century but a quick tour will quickly show you that there have been a number of changes made in the ensuing years. For starters, the large swimming pool is a relatively recent addition – and a welcome one, at that – as is the huge Jacuzzi in its own separate annexe. There's a contemporary sleekness to the kitchen and bathrooms in the main house, as well.

That being said, a certain sense of heritage has been expertly retained during the recent refurbishment and there's an undeniable character in the exposed stonework, wooden ceiling beams and the elegant staircase that takes you up to the bedrooms. The tall verandah complete with a barbecue, alfresco dining table and views of the Andalusian countryside through the archways is an impressive feature, too.

Although the surrounding area feels peaceful, there are a pair of towns –Alhaurin el Grande and Alhaurin de la Torre – that both lie about 5km from the home. Torremolinos's sandy beach is a 15km-journey, while there are plenty of golf courses and prime hiking terrain to be discovered nearby.

Best suited to quieter family holidays, the local area isn't all about tourists. But adventurers will love the free covered parking for road trips across the Costa del Sol.

Inside, it’s rustic and homespun with terracotta tiles, timber ceiling beams and a collection of bright, soft furnishings. We loved the living space with its two seating areas – curl up on the cream loveseat with a good book or spread out with your loved ones on the patterned sofas. When you’re ready for something to eat, chop, season and marinade in the fully-equipped kitchen then grill up a storm on the barbecue. 

Spend lazy afternoons floating about in the private pool or relaxing with a glass of something fruity on the covered terrace. If you’re keen to get out and explore, drive for 27 kilometres into the heart of Málaga. Make a beeline for Malagueta Beach then stroll around the charming old town. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, seek out a laidback eatery for a traditional paella.

Seclusion is the watchword here at this honey-brown stone villa surrounded by greenery. It sits in the Sierra de Mijas foothills, where verdant green mountains rise up beyond the towering palms. With olive groves on one side and family plots dotting the hillside, it’s a place of tranquillity. But the area isn’t entirely wild, with the Lauro Golf Course just next door and a twenty-minute drive to the buzzing city of Malaga.

In keeping with the natural surroundings, this home is environmentally conscious too, powered by solar panels. Outside, you can spend sunny days by the swimming pool which has been set up with a slide for the kids. Palm-frond umbrellas shade loungers on the lawn so grown-ups can keep an eye on the play area (with swings, a slide and a treehouse) without having to lift a finger. Plus, there’s a covered outdoor kitchen for barbecues and the dining area is blissfully in the shade.

Heading inside, you’ve got the traditional feel of terracotta tiles underfoot and a ramshackle assortment of squashy sofas, object d’art and a library of books keeping things homely. For chilly evenings, there’s a fireplace in the open-plan living area. We love the wood-beamed ceilings which go nicely with the country-style kitchen. On the ground floor, one of the bedrooms suites has a foosball table and a TV area for hanging out late at night.

Given everything this home has to offer, it’s hardly surprising that it ended up in the pages of Marie Claire back in 2019. You’ve got all the amenities you could wish for here, from a poolside bar to an outdoor Jacuzzi – not to mention, an open-plan living area complete with cosy fireplace for keeping warm when temperatures start to drop. Kick back and relax in the orange-hued interior or head outside for a spot of alfresco dining by the pool. Glass of sangria, anyone? 

We could easily spend all day here but if you fancy a change of pace, there’s plenty to keep you occupied nearby. Practise your swing at Lauro Golf Resort, stretch your legs with a ramble along one of the Sierra de Mijas hiking trails, or jump in the car and head into Malaga for a spot of sightseeing.
