Start your day on the balcony where you can enjoy a cup of coffee just after sunrise. Bask in the tranquillity as you admire ocean views flanked by rolling hills and the mountains of the Andalusian region. When you’ve found your peace, return inside to take on breakfast duties together.

The main reason for this is the way that the hosts find a balance between retaining period features with adding more contemporary amenities. Behind the home's whitewashed walls, you'll see wooden ceiling beams and a traditional fireplace, but also a modern kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms.

Given the local climate, you will probably want to spend as many waking hours in the open air as possible and there are plenty of ways to do just that across the ten-hectare site. Not only is the swimming pool especially cooling on hot afternoons, but it also looks out over sweeping views of local hillsides. If you're ever in need of a little shade, there's lots of space to sit and relax beneath the leafy pergola, too.

The address sure does feel secluded and the nearest village – Cómpeta – is just over two kilometres away, offering a small selection of shops and restaurants. A little further afield, the coastline lies about 20 kilometres away and there's a great selection of beaches from which to pick.

The terrace is where you’ll spend most of your time, whether that’s cooking up a storm on the barbecue or cooling off in the private pool. Should you fancy some alone time, most of the bedrooms have balcony access. If you intend to explore during your stay, we’d recommend hiring a car. Those looking for a remote retreat need look no further than this rustic mountain home, situated inland from the bustling shores of the Costa del Sol. Spread over a single level, the home flows from room to room with elegant archways separating the spaces. With exposed stone walls, terracotta floor tiles and elegant wooden furniture, your hosts have designed a welcoming space that's in keeping with its spectacular rural surroundings. 

The grounds are the real highlight and have been designed to make the most of the enviable Mediterranean climate and breathtaking views. As you might hope, there are plenty of spots from which you can drink in this beautiful panorama, including a swimming pool and a sunken hot tub positioned right at the edge of the glass-walled terrace.

As if that wasn't enough, the dining table on the verandah is sure to be the scene for merry dinners that stretch long into the night – perhaps with dishes served straight off the barbecue. There's even a ping pong table just in case you brought your competitive side with you.

Probably quite sensibly, the home's interior doesn't attempt to better the stunning natural surroundings and lies on the minimalist side. That being said, it's plain to see that care and attention have gone into the design, particularly the sleek kitchen and the cosy fireplace that sits in the corner of the living room.

The local town of Árchez is only three minutes away in the car and offers a handful of restaurants and the start of a hiking trail. If it's outdoor excursions you're after, the vast Sierras de Tejeda National Park starts just five minutes' drive away and will please hikers and climbers with the wealth of routes and scenic points. On the other end of the scale, the golden sands of Playa de la Caleta de Vélez are a thirty-five-minute drive away.

Ruggedly Handsome

Although this villa is only ten minutes' drive from the Malagan coastline, the green hillsides that surround the address and the sense of seclusion make it feel a lot further inland. 

As such, it's remarkably easy to relax here, especially in the outdoor area complete with a swimming pool and a Balinese bed that overlooks the glistening water. As well as that, there's also a large stone barbecue and a table on the verandah, both ready and waiting for long summer evening dinners.

Although the Andalusian climate means that you'll inevitably try and spend as much time outside as possible, the home's interior is sure to impress when you finally get around to heading inside. There's definitely a traditional feel to the design, with terracotta tiles underfoot, wooden finishes and whitewashed walls. The double-aspect glass doors in the living space are also particularly generous when it comes to natural light, too.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, there's a great choice of small towns and villages that lie a short drive away from the home, including Algarrobo ten minutes' drive away. There are larger cities within easy reach too, such as Malaga itself only forty minutes away by car.

The villa is modern and sleek, and the occasional bold splash of colour adds a touch of warmth and character. The marble floors and steep stairs might put off parents with little ones, though.
