Located near Goya, Evita will bring you into an authentic, beautiful neighbourhood, only minutes away from Retiro Park. The nearby buildings, which you can see from the comfort of your huge bay windows, boast typical townhouse decoration, and there are lots of fantastic cafes nearby. Although this house is simply decorated, every item feels like it's in the right place, creating a coherent modern look. Aside from the natural light in the communal area, we really enjoyed the cosy study between the bedrooms.

Nestled in Madrid's Diego de León street, this sleek pad has a large balcony with seating and a dedicated home office space. You'll be able to bring a furry friend for an additional cost, and with the French doors flung open, the apartment is bright and airy. The location means there's potential for some noise, and you won't find much parking, but we think it's in a great spot from which to get around the city. El Retiro Park is just an eight-minute cycle from your door, and there's plenty of public transport close by for visiting the must-see sights and cultural hotspots.

As you walk through the front door, you'll appreciate the creative spirit that has gone into decorating the space, in particular the statement lighting and the interesting collection of artwork hanging on the walls. That being said, the basics are well executed here too, including the sleek white-grey kitchen where you can easily knock up a quick bite to eat and the tasteful bedrooms, each with an en-suite. After spending days having your mind opened at the nearby museums, wandering around plazas admiring the stately buildings and dining at some of the most celebrated restaurants in the city, you'll see why this local area remains to this day one of the most coveted addresses among Madrilenians.

Thanks to nearby metro stations, you're well-connected to the tourist hotspots. During downtime, though, relax back at home. The living space is modern and open-plan, making it easy to gather together. Both bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms – though our favourite is the main suite, with its soaker tub – while a sofa bed accommodates guests five and six. There's also a contemporary kitchen, though it's quite likely you'll want to discover the nearby local eateries and bars the area is known for.

Salamanca Dream

Live like a local in the neighbourhood of Ventas. The Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas is within walking distance, and there are various eateries and bars to enjoy. The area is well connected to the urban bus and metro transport network, which is handy, as most of the city's attractions are a ride away. There's a small balcony, although you may have to work out a rota system as the table here only seats two, but the dining table inside seats six people. There's also a desk in the main bedroom if you need to work from home. All in all, if you don't mind being away from the action, this is a lovely base for your Madrid adventure.

With El Retiro Park and the grand boulevards of Salamanca all within walking distance, the upmarket residential neighbourhood of Lista is the place to be. Discover it all from this stylish apartment right in the heart of it all. Not that you'd know it sat in the tranquil shared garden – a rare find for a home this central. While we can't fault the apartment's sophisticated interiors, the last two bedrooms feel a little compact compared to the main bedroom, but there's still everything you need for a comfortable night's sleep. The three dedicated desk spaces will be handy, too, for anyone planning to work or study.

The Green Grazia

This apartment is located in Madrid's stylish Salamanca neighbourhood. While it's on the smaller side, you'll have a spacious terrace with an outdoor dining area and views over the city. You won't find much parking in this area, but the nearest bus stop is only a short walk away and really opens up the city. At an additional cost you can bring a furry friend, and it serves as a comfortable and practical base whether you're visiting the city for business or leisure.

Utilise the great public transport links and visit the Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace, both of which can be reached in twenty to thirty minutes. Or, stay closer to home to peruse the many art galleries in the area which can be reached in as little as four minutes by foot. 

In the late afternoon, why not take a reinvigorating siesta or relax on the internal balcony – which opens up via French doors from the living space – and offers not only a delightfully bright place to enjoy the views but also shelters you from the elements on rainy days. 

At dinner time, we would love nothing more than to go on a Spanish tapas tour of the local bars –which can be reached in as little as twelve minutes on foot. Then, wind down for the day as you kick back and relax on the designer furnishings and enjoy the salon’s full entertainment system.

We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. Rest up well, because you’ve got some exploring to do the next morning – the three galleries of the Art Walk are all less than fifteen minutes away.

The Venetian

Keen to be in the hustle and bustle? This apartment, just a ten-minute stroll from Gran Vía, may be a great choice. It's easy to get to all the landmarks on foot or by metro, and there are a lot of bars and restaurants nearby. Unsurprisingly it can get a tad noisy – but that's part of the city experience. We love the bright living area, and the two snug bedrooms channel Spanish sunshine with their yellow paint. Size-wise, it's rather compact but still comfortable – just note that it's on the second floor and lacks a lift.
