Although this home is slightly further away from the most important sights, Plaza Mayor is still within easy reach by metro. Instead, this home is only a short walk away from Retiro, Madrid's largest park–well-suited for someone who appreciates a quieter neighbourhood. The Peacock and the Steed has is an eclectic home that mixes minimalist design in the kitchen and living room with more classical influences in the bedroom. Our favourite is the freestanding bath and the original hydraulic tiles from the seventies.

Nestled in Madrid's Diego de León street, this sleek pad has a large balcony with seating and a dedicated home office space. You'll be able to bring a furry friend for an additional cost, and with the French doors flung open, the apartment is bright and airy. The location means there's potential for some noise, and you won't find much parking, but we think it's in a great spot from which to get around the city. El Retiro Park is just an eight-minute cycle from your door, and there's plenty of public transport close by for visiting the must-see sights and cultural hotspots.

Perfect for a group of friends or family, this city oasis in the vibrant Lista neighbourhood is a real find. There’s a balcony for morning coffees, a desk for when work is on the agenda and a large wooden table for sharing tapas dinners. Salamanca is one of the most exclusive and glamorous districts in Madrid, filled as it is with foreign embassies and designer shops along the 'Golden Mile', and all the luxurious landmarks of the neighbourhood are waiting to be explored from this modern apartment found on the east side of the barrio. As you walk through the front door, you'll appreciate the creative spirit that has gone into decorating the space, in particular the statement lighting and the interesting collection of artwork hanging on the walls. That being said, the basics are well executed here too, including the sleek white-grey kitchen where you can easily knock up a quick bite to eat and the tasteful bedrooms, each with an en-suite. After spending days having your mind opened at the nearby museums, wandering around plazas admiring the stately buildings and dining at some of the most celebrated restaurants in the city, you'll see why this local area remains to this day one of the most coveted addresses among Madrilenians.

You’ll find this apartment in the Lista neighbourhood, making it an ideal place to stay whether you’re in the Spanish capital for work or leisure. Indeed, for business travellers, the desk in this home provides the perfect spot for remote working – just don’t work too hard when you could be soaking up the sun on the private balcony, instead. Located near Goya, Evita will bring you into an authentic, beautiful neighbourhood, only minutes away from Retiro Park. The nearby buildings, which you can see from the comfort of your huge bay windows, boast typical townhouse decoration, and there are lots of fantastic cafes nearby. Although this house is simply decorated, every item feels like it's in the right place, creating a coherent modern look. Aside from the natural light in the communal area, we really enjoyed the cosy study between the bedrooms.

Molten Brass is neat and tidy. There isn’t a lot that jumps out at you, but that’s not necessarily a problem – the atmosphere inside is pretty calm. That stands in contrast to the atmosphere on the street below, which is pretty intense, but that’s because you’re in the heart of Malasaña, so there’s tonnes to do. As is common with any flat that is rented out all the time, there’s a lack of personality but the attention to detail, and generally pleasant, if simple, design help make the flat feel more homely.

With a fantastic address, just off the Paseo de la Castellana, this apartment has a wealth of attractions nearby. The upmarket districts of Salamanca, Chamberi and Justicia are all close, so you'll have plenty of fine restaurants, chic boutiques and art galleries to enjoy. With one of Madrid's main avenues on your doorstep, the slight downside is you will hear some street noise here, but it's easily fixed with some earplugs if you're a light sleeper. We have to say, we love the views over Plaza Villa de París from this home. The kitchen is well-equipped, so you can cook some homemade meals or let your host arrange a private chef to create some of your favourite tapas dishes.

Modern, compact and centrally located, this apartment is the perfect landing pad for those always on the go. Inside, it’s stripped-back and minimalistic with funky patterned walls, tiles and textiles adding interest to the spaces. Wake up feeling refreshed in the neat bedrooms before starting the day with a quick breakfast put together in your fully-equipped kitchen. Once you’ve finished your coffee, head out and explore your surroundings.

Located in the north-most part of Salamanca, El Bodegón combines a sense of luxury and with a prime shopping destination of the nearby Calle Serrano (and the proximity to the sights). This is a luxuriously comfortable home that made us want to sink into the comfy sofa and rest, or enjoy a great book on the closed balcony. The master bathroom, as pretty as it is, feels a bit narrow, but it's still well-equipped and comfortable.

This studio apartment in the heart of Madrid may be on the smaller side, but it's packed with plenty of character. We love how the quirky interior nods to the area's history – particularly the colourful tile flooring and exposed stonework – yet it still feels trendy and cool. The snug kitchen has everything you need to rustle up a meal or two, but you'll want to spend your evenings sipping wine and tucking into a delicious Spanish feast at one of the excellent restaurants right on your doorstep. 

With Chueca metro station just a five-minute walk away, most of Madrid's must-see sights are within easy reach. Stroll down to the Plaza Mayor in twenty minutes or spend an afternoon wandering around the city's many markets and museums. The design is somewhat lacking a coherent theme, but Blue Torito is still a solid, bright, and comfortable choice, with access to a resident-only pool and terrace.

With a carefully selected simple palette, a few striking art pieces, and an abundance of natural materials, it makes the most of a compact space. There are lots of quirky details in Flowerhead, but the location is probably its greatest strength. Just across the road from the green vastness of Retiro, this home is within walking distance to both the museum quarter and the famous Puerta del Sol.

Ten minutes from the alfresco drinking spots of Plaza Mayor, and just over fifteen from the lush greenery of the Parque de El Retiro, this apartment is a wonderful base in Madrid. Despite being so close to main attractions and located among the most vibrant streets, it’s a space where you can relax. This apartment is classy, colourful, and comfortable. The host has taken it upon themself to create a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, curating an eclectic look with antiques and flea-market finds. We love the living and dining room, complete with mid-century chairs and a chandelier to create an elegant glow for dinner parties. Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. Rest up well, because you’ve got some exploring to do the next morning – the three galleries of the Art Walk are all less than fifteen minutes away.

Step into the heart of Madrid with a stay in this contemporary loft. From the simple aesthetic to the functional design, this is a great option for couples and solo travellers in search of a refreshing city stay. At full occupancy, two guests will be sleeping on the sofa bed in the living room and the main bedroom is located on the mezzanine level (with no door), but you’ll find all the essentials needed to make it your own. Outside, it’s just a short stroll to local tapas bars, shops and iconic sights like the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid.

This chic and attractive apartment has everything you might need for a comfortable city break. It’s located in Chueca, one of Madrid’s liveliest neighbourhoods, full of cafes, boutiques, and bars. Despite its central location, this is a peaceful home-from-home, ideal for unwinding after busy sightseeing days and evenings spent feasting on tapas. It’s bright and welcoming, flooded with light, and has been beautifully decorated in muted tones. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the living room – if you’re hoping for more space, we’d recommend a maximum occupancy of two.

This is an elaborate home that impresses with the broad strokes as well as fine ones. An enviable structure with high ceilings and big windows is filled with custom-made furniture that leaves plenty of space to move around. We loved the use of space that puts desks, chairs and bold art pieces in unexpected places – against all odds, it works.

Just a ten-minute walk from Plaza Mayor, this stylish flat isn't messing about when it comes to location. Interesting museums, high-end shopping and many of Madrid's must-see landmarks are a quick stroll away – including Puerta del Sol, Parque de El Retiro and Palacio Real de Madrid, just to name a few. If you love trying new cuisine, you're in luck – this neighbourhood has an array of delectable restaurants and lively bars to while away the evenings in.

Or, if you're partial to homecooked meals, make your way back to this stylish flat and rustle up something tasty in the kitchen. It has everything you'll need – a large island, built-in appliances and plenty of counter space. The rest of the flat is impeccable, too – two glossy bathrooms (one decked out with bold palm leaf wallpaper, another en-suite) feature rainfall showers, the comfortable bedrooms are cosy and pared-back and the bright living area boats a squishy sofa and a lovely Juliet balcony that floods the room with light. We think you'll love calling this apartment home, whether you're in town for a few days or a few weeks.
