This fantastic duplex apartment has an entrance next to Retiro Park, in a relatively quiet area of the bustling city. El Retiro translates as “Park of the Pleasant Retreat”, and this home offers exactly that. 

We would love to spend some time every day here strolling around the beautiful Retiro Park which used to belong to the Spanish Monarchy until it was opened up to the public to enjoy in the late nineteenth century. Wander through the green space, admiring the fountains and statues of Spaniards before taking a break in one of the open-air cafes. 

Hop on public transport to explore even more sights and attractions of Madrid, including the Plaza Mayor – reachable in twenty-nine minutes. Then, after a busy day, dine at one of the restaurants in the neighbourhood which are within a four-minute walk. Or, enjoy a tapas meal together at home before retiring to the sofa in the cosy living room nook with a glass of sangria.

We challenge you to find a prettier apartment overlooking the Royal Palace of Madrid. This place is a real showstopper, with twin Juliet balconies opening over Plaza de Oriente Gardens. Bold, bright and just downright beautiful, it's dripping in character thanks to ornate cornice, traditional shuttered windows and classical furnishing. A riot of elegant colours and patterns, it couldn't be further from modern minimalism if it tried.

Once you've arrived and stared out of the window for long enough to take it all in, choose between the two pretty bedrooms – one decorated in calming greens, the other in vibrant terracotta. There's a grand, open-plan living space to keep everything sociable, and a kitchen with everything you'll need for cooking at home. But we suspect you'll be eating out much of the time – it would be rude not to when surrounded by some of the best cafes and restaurants in the city. Of course, there are plenty of dining options to discover in the area, too. The apartment has a desk if you need to catch up on emails and a well-equipped kitchen for making some tapas. We have to say, we love the main bedroom with its dressing room and en-suite. This home is a great choice whether you’re here for leisure or work.

Start the day with a home-cooked breakfast thanks to the contemporary kitchen, then tuck in alfresco with a cup of coffee before heading out to explore.

Step out of the front door and you'll be on the bustling streets of Madrid, within an easy distance of the area's main attractions. There’s a beautiful contrast throughout where the decor mixes luxury furniture and decorations with somewhat industrial architectural features. A typically Spanish tiled floor separates the dining area from the white wooden floor of the living space, but with chunky, girder-like iron pillars at the other end. The pale frames of the delicate bamboo armchairs contrast the black metal and glass door frames leading to the kitchen. Overall, it really makes for an intriguing mix of interiors that is unique, opulent, and full of character – just like the surrounding neighbourhood. Head out into the elegant boulevards of this area to find Michelin-starred restaurants, exclusive bars, and high-end boutiques. Or you can escape the city vibes for an afternoon by taking a seventeen-minute walk to the Parque de El Retiro. You’re sure to be enchanted by this 350-acre parkland offering a boating lake, galleries, and sculptures.

This is a big and cleverly laid-out home that impressed us with how quiet it was – in spite of the fact that it's in the strictest centre of Madrid. Both Puerta del Sol and the Prado are within walking distance, setting you up for great sightseeing walks. Corinthian gives the impression of old-timey grandeur. It's not a scratch-free home, but one that feels lived in and furnished with a personality. The high ceiling and use of wood in almost every room give it a warm and welcoming vibe.

To stay at this stylish home-from-home in the heart of bustling Atocha is to discover the rich history of Madrid. Inside the apartment, think vibrant pops of colour, abstract art, and sleek furnishings on a white-walled and light wooden floor canvas. Located near Goya, Evita will bring you into an authentic, beautiful neighbourhood, only minutes away from Retiro Park. The nearby buildings, which you can see from the comfort of your huge bay windows, boast typical townhouse decoration, and there are lots of fantastic cafes nearby. Although this house is simply decorated, every item feels like it's in the right place, creating a coherent modern look. Aside from the natural light in the communal area, we really enjoyed the cosy study between the bedrooms. 

Evita

Twenty minutes on foot from Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and El Retiro Park, this apartment is well-placed to explore. Many shops, restaurants, and metro stations are nearby, as well as some of Madrid's most famous markets. When you're not sightseeing, this central home is practical and comfortable. We love the exposed brick and stone walls, though it does mean it's a little dark. The kitchen is the ideal size to rustle up lighter fare, but we suspect you'd prefer dining out.
