We can't get enough of the sky-high beamed ceilings or the huge windows – they truly are as impressive as they look – nor can we take our eyes off those views. Step out onto the balconies (there are three of them) and admire the rolling valley and the estate's verdant garden. One balcony even has a quaint bistro-style table – whether you're enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning breeze or trying the regional wine gifted by your lovely hosts, it's the ideal spot to relax in the Spanish rays. And speaking of the sun, all of the estate runs on sustainable sources like solar panels, which provide electricity, hot water, and underfloor heating.

What we love most, however, are the impressive grounds. Enjoy an afternoon dip in the pool, play a game of table tennis, or use a mountain bike and explore the trails leading into the Catalan countryside. The sleepy medieval village centre of La Torre de Claramunt is just around the corner – there you’ll find a few local eateries, a delicious bakery and an 11th-century castle. It's hard to believe that this traditional town is only a fifty-minute drive from Barcelona's city centre – we think it's pretty perfect for those craving a laid-back stay in the heart of Catalonia.

The Marquesa's Chambers

La Torre de Claramunt is a sleepy village just a fifty-minute drive from bustling Barcelona. Home to an 11th-century castle and plenty of Catalan charm, those wanting a break from city life will enjoy wandering the old-world alleys with local restaurants, bars and bakeries. It's also where you'll find this characterful apartment, set on the grounds of an illustrious estate, bordering on one side to the medieval city centre and on the other side to the green valley. The former home of the Marques de Gironella, it's said he built this home in 1900 to rival his elder brother's castle across the way – no wonder the views at the Castell are so good.

What we love most about this cosy flat is its heritage. It used to be the chapel, and you can feel that history in everything from antique furniture to the sky-high beamed ceilings. But it's not all ancient appeal here – there's a sleek bathroom, a glossy kitchen fit for rustling up tapas and underfloor heating powered by solar panels to keep frosty toes at bay. There's no air conditioning here, but due to the home's high ceilings and excellent isolation, the apartment stays cool in summer, and there are fans too, so you'll scarcely miss it.

Start your morning with an espresso on the sunny patio before strolling among the gardens – you can splash in the shared pool filled with natural spring water, play a game of table tennis, chess or checkers in the Spanish sunshine or use a mountain bike and cycle the unspoiled routes right on the grounds. End the evening with a catered meal (we suggest paella) and a glass of regional Penedès wine as the sun goes down – your host leaves a bottle for you in the welcome basket.

Chapel of Charm

Just one hour west of the bustling metropolis of Barcelona, La Torre de Clarmunt is a medieval village with traditional, rural charm. With its striking 11th-century Castell (four minutes on foot from your front door) and quaint streets of bakeries, casual local restaurants, and bars, you might find this a welcome contrast from the Catalan capital.

Your apartment also has a bit of history itself – formerly the sleeping quarters of the Marqués de Gironella, old-world elegance and luxe is an important aspect of your stay. This Catalan wine finca has stood for over three-hundred years, but twelve years ago it underwent an impressive transformation. The home is now split into nine individual villas that makes it feel more like a private village instead of the finca it was in its previous life. The fact that each villa feels isolated – most with their own outdoor areas, and all of them with lounge, dining, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom space – allows each family a little bit of privacy, but without ever feeling completely removed from the rest of the group. As each villa has a slightly different feel to it – don’t worry, there are still a lot of the typical characteristics on display – each group will undoubtedly find one that they most relate to.
