Skiing in Finland is an experience all lovers of the slopes should enjoy at some point, with thick snow and fairytale forests. This mountain home is within walking distance of the excellent Masto runs, with views far across the rocky landscape. Within a striking modern building, it's stone and dark grey cladding is an imposing sight. Inside, you'll be wowed by its floor-to-ceiling windows, its double height main room and its stylish Scandi design features. Warm up around the fire, pull up a chair and read by the window, or treat yourself to time alone in the private sauna. If you're here for the skiing, it's practically on your doorstep, and there's lockable ski storage outside. Visit in the summer for a very different view, with lush green hills perfect for hiking.

Now, this is what you call a log cabin: a striking, sturdy wooden home, made from centuries-old Kelo wood. In case you’re wondering (we were), Kelo is an old, dried-out pine tree that’s shed its bark. It’s a natural antique, unique to the arctic region. And this home has it in double-height abundance. If it wasn’t for the wood, there’d be an echo inside the vast living space, but the rough edges and super-smooth panelling combine to give this home warmth. The wood burner and customary sauna help too, of course. There’s a generous covered porch for kicking off your kit after a day on the slopes, and a ski waxing room so you can prep for the next day. All told, it’s a fabulous family space inside a great big chunk of tree, conveniently located for the ski bus.

Cute as a reindeer’s button nose, this log cabin sits in the Finnish wilderness. The shores of Lake Vanttausjärvi are 20 metres away where you can take a boat out in summer for a spot of fishing (a rowing boat and outboard are included with a stay here). But it’s winter when this place really comes into its own. A cosy classic cabin vibe awaits, as towering pines are laden with snow and the scenery is blissfully silent. You may even spot the Northern Lights above. As snow blankets the land, keep warm in the outdoor hot tub or with a session in the garden sauna. Then there’s the lakeside summer kitchen, which could be a misnomer as it’s heated and a delight to cook in during the winter months too. Perhaps grill some of your own freshly-caught fish in the wood fire here. 

Inside, this home has all the trappings of a traditional log cabin – antler candelabra, whitewashed log walls on display and a wood-burning stove at the heart of the home. While we can't make any promises about the aurora borealis, we can tell you that this wooden cabin is serving up some seriously homely vibes. After a day of adventures, soothe your muscles in the in-house sauna, before whipping up a comforting meal in the sleek kitchen. In the evening, snuggle up with your family on the couch in front of the fire for a movie night. Or head back out to the balcony with a glass of wine, and take in views of the lush forests for which the land of the midnight sun is famous, and keep a look out for the northern lights.

Powder Fresh

Perched on the banks of lake Yli-Suolijärvi in northern Finland, this recently-finished cabin is a wonderful place for a wintery escape. There are four pairs of snowshoes, as well as a bobsleigh, sledges and sliders available for guests to use to explore the immediate vicinity. Kirintövaara resort takes twenty minutes to reach in the car, as does Riisitunturi National Park. And then, once you've spent a few hours having fun in the snow, you can return to the home to warm up. This being Finland, there's a sauna in the house for you to take advantage of, but there's also underfloor heating and a hot tub outside, if you're feeling particularly brave. After a hearty dinner prepared in the minimalist kitchen, we can imagine no more satisfying end to the day than lounging about on the leather sofas and watching the snow fall through the window that takes up one side of the living room.

Saint Nicholas

Wooden walls and floors, outdoor decking, and large sash windows give this semi-detached home an open feel – perfect for groups of friends, who don't mind having a neighbour next door (or who might want to take over both homes). The home is made of thermo log, recently built in 2019, so this is a home that takes the log cabin vibe and modernises it. In the summer, make the most of the long nights on the balcony, watching the twilight through the pine forest that surrounds the plot. Come winter, it's only a ten-minute drive to Ylläs ski resort – when you're done, get home and bag your space in the private sauna. Evenings are best spent in the living area, in front of the burning fire and watching the TV from the grey L-shaped sofa. If that sounds a bit too chilled out, ski and snowmobile trails run by the space, perfect for exploring this corner of Finland.

Lyre's Leap

This recently renovated log cabin is the ideal place to press pause on everyday life and immerse yourself in nature. Located in the Kuusamo region of Finland, it's part of a small collection of holiday homes and offers perfect peace where you can kick back and relax with your favourite people. 

There's plenty of rural charm inside, with reindeer skins on the walls, wooden beams and comfy furniture where you can get cosy on chilly evenings. Light up the fire and curl up on the sofa with a glass of wine, or serve up some family favourites at the long dining table. Outside you'll find a patio area if the weather is mild enough to dine alfresco, and you can round off your day as the Finns do with a relaxing session in the private sauna. 

It would be easy to spend your whole trip simply relaxing in these tranquil surroundings, but if you want to explore the area then there is plenty to do. Thrill-seekers can enjoy a day on the mountain at Ruka Ski Resort – it's just a three-minute drive away from your front door. In the warmer months, you can hike or cycle, through the rugged landscapes, and if you're good at fishing then you can even catch your dinner at one of the nearby lakes. 

Roaring Log Fire

This cosy apartment near Ruka is the best of both worlds. Surrounded by lush Finnish forests, at the foot of nearby ski trails, and facing the stunning Lake Talvijärvi, it's got outdoor activities for every day of the week – no matter the season. Wood and stone accents and a neutral colour palette give this home a rustic cabin-like feel that blends perfectly with the great outdoors. A comfortable base, with everything you could need, we love the private terrace and the traditional fireplace. After a day of adventures, soothe your muscles in the electric sauna before settling down for a movie night. If you'd prefer to get out and about, head into Ruka. One of the largest ski resorts in the country, it's got dozens of shops and restaurants to explore. In the winter it's all about skiing but visit in the summer for hiking, kayaking, fishing and much more.


Silver & Snow

This lakeside log cabin is surrounded by slender pines and feels wonderfully remote and private. The home itself is sturdily built to withstand the northern winters, while plenty of expansive windows let light flood in from between the trees. Geothermal heating keeps this home snug whatever the season, and there’s an indoor sauna for turning up the heat even more. Outside you’re within a stone’s throw of the vast Lake Livojärvi with its silver waters and soft sandy beaches. The lake makes this home ideal for a summer holiday with children, as it is both shallow and safe. There’s even a house rowboat for adventures across the water. Winter visitors can enjoy snowmobile trails, winter hiking and skiing at Kiri, around a twenty-minute drive away. A true winter wonderland.

Silver Lake Beach

This charming home offers the quintessential log cabin experience. Blanketed in snow for much of the year, it’s in a peaceful location, surrounded by ancient, evergreen forest. Sitting out on the deck you might spot woodpeckers and squirrels. Inside, you’ll find timbered walls, a welcoming living space centred around the wood burner and a traditional Finnish sauna that we could happily hunker down in for days. 

When you’re ready to explore, there’s plenty to enjoy outside too. You’re just 500m from Pyhä-Luosto National Park, with the main Luosto ski slopes 8km away; when conditions are good, the nearest ski track begins just 50m from the house. Spend your days carving up the powder, before coming back to your cosy cabin for a sauna or a hot chocolate by the roaring fire. 

Velvet Snow

Known for its subarctic wilderness, Northern lights, and amazing ski resorts, Lapland is the quintessential snowy break.
