There’s even a fireplace on the all-wood veranda outside. The cabin is dotted with little luxuries too. Every bedroom has its own bathroom and there’s a ski waxing room to ensure smooth gliding along the cross country trails in the area. It’s the private sauna that really tops it off for us. Throw some water on the löyly to really get the humidity going. Embrace the Finnish tradition and jump in the snow afterwards.

Cute as a reindeer’s button nose, this log cabin sits in the Finnish wilderness. The shores of Lake Vanttausjärvi are 20 metres away where you can take a boat out in summer for a spot of fishing (a rowing boat and outboard are included with a stay here). But it’s winter when this place really comes into its own. A cosy classic cabin vibe awaits, as towering pines are laden with snow and the scenery is blissfully silent. You may even spot the Northern Lights above. As snow blankets the land, keep warm in the outdoor hot tub or with a session in the garden sauna. Then there’s the lakeside summer kitchen, which could be a misnomer as it’s heated and a delight to cook in during the winter months too. Perhaps grill some of your own freshly-caught fish in the wood fire here. 

Inside, this home has all the trappings of a traditional log cabin – antler candelabra, whitewashed log walls on display and a wood-burning stove at the heart of the home. A picture-frame window displays the snowy landscape proudly, particularly enjoyable when curled up with a cup of cocoa on the L-shaped sofa. A full kitchen provides everything you need for self-catering, and the closest shop is a ten-minute snowmobile ride (or even-minute drive) away in Vanttauskoski.

Just outside the Arctic city of Rovaniemi, this cabin sits in a patch of forest, surrounded by trees. It sits atop the Ounasvaara plateau, one of the best spots to witness the Northern Lights while remaining close to the city. Winter sports enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to the Olympic training centre, for ice hockey matches in winter and forest assault courses in summer.

It’s a traditional, Finnish-style cabin with the clapboard painted red on the outside and all pinewood inside. The ground floor is dedicated to a dine-in kitchen with a sofa for unwinding, where a wood-burning stove crackling away in the evening keeps things cosy. Tucked up in the A-frame loft space, you’ll find a second bedroom and lounge area with a TV. A wooden veranda lets you sit outside and listen to the sounds of nature around you.

Located just thirteen minutes from Inari, this lodge in the sticks has everything you might need for a tranquil getaway from the hustle and bustle back home. We love the timber-heavy interiors, striking fire and sliding glass doors that offer views of the picturesque landscape all around – as if you'd need reminding. Stepping out the front door, there's a decked terrace that leads to your very own sauna for the ultimate rest and relaxation. Whether you've been fly fishing over the river Juutuanjoki (a seven-minute drive away), hiking the Lemmenjoki national park (a twenty-six-minute drive), or taking in the breathtaking views over the sand beach right next to your home, any day is best bookmarked with a detox by the wood-burning sauna stove. Come evening, we recommend sitting out on the terrace, sipping sundowners and watching the starry night sky twinkle overhead.

Now, this is what you call a log cabin: a striking, sturdy wooden home, made from centuries-old Kelo wood. In case you’re wondering (we were), Kelo is an old, dried-out pine tree that’s shed its bark. It’s a natural antique, unique to the arctic region. And this home has it in double-height abundance. If it wasn’t for the wood, there’d be an echo inside the vast living space, but the rough edges and super-smooth panelling combine to give this home warmth. The wood burner and customary sauna help too, of course. There’s a generous covered porch for kicking off your kit after a day on the slopes, and a ski waxing room so you can prep for the next day. All told, it’s a fabulous family space inside a great big chunk of tree, conveniently located for the ski bus. 

Silver Kelo

In the southernmost fell in Finland, you will find this simple, cabin-like dwelling. The apartment is in a semi-detached house, offering you all the privacy of a home. The humble interiors are bright and wood-panelled, for a cosy time in the woods. Outside, there is a covered terrace and grilling hut for prepping fresh meals while you listen to birds whistle or watch the snow falling. The home is not far from the slopes; the freshly groomed trails of Pikku-Syöte await. While we can't make any promises about the aurora borealis, we can tell you that this wooden cabin is serving up some seriously homely vibes. There are four pairs of snowshoes, as well as a bobsleigh, sledges and sliders available for guests to use to explore the immediate vicinity. Kirintövaara resort takes twenty minutes to reach in the car, as does Riisitunturi National Park. And then, once you've spent a few hours having fun in the snow, you can return to the home to warm up. This being Finland, there's a sauna in the house for you to take advantage of, but there's also underfloor heating and a hot tub outside, if you're feeling particularly brave. After a hearty dinner prepared in the minimalist kitchen, we can imagine no more satisfying end to the day than lounging about on the leather sofas and watching the snow fall through the window that takes up one side of the living room.

This cosy apartment is in an Alpine-style stone house just 150m from the main slope, so during ski season you can pretty much rise and glide. Come back to your cosy home and warm up in the sauna before preparing dinner by the fireplace and then heading out on the hunt for the Northern Lights. You’re just 500m from Pyhä-Luosto National Park, with the main Luosto ski slopes 8km away; when conditions are good, the nearest ski track begins just 50m from the house. Spend your days carving up the powder, before coming back to your cosy cabin for a sauna or a hot chocolate by the roaring fire.
