While we can't make any promises about the aurora borealis, we can tell you that this wooden cabin is serving up some seriously homely vibes. Set near a lake - which is perfect for summertime dips - the plot is traditionally Scandinavian. Thick tree trunks have been used to create the walls, while further wood panelling separates the bedrooms. The combined living space has got an L-shaped sofa for nights snuggled in front of the fire. A small kitchen has got everything needed for lighter meals. For those hitting the slopes, there's a communal ski waxing room to prep your equipment. And of course, what lodge would be complete without its own sauna to sweat it out after a long day?

Cute as a reindeer’s button nose, this log cabin sits in the Finnish wilderness. The shores of Lake Vanttausjärvi are 20 metres away where you can take a boat out in summer for a spot of fishing (a rowing boat and outboard are included with a stay here). But it’s winter when this place really comes into its own. A cosy classic cabin vibe awaits, as towering pines are laden with snow and the scenery is blissfully silent. You may even spot the Northern Lights above. As snow blankets the land, keep warm in the outdoor hot tub or with a session in the garden sauna. Then there’s the lakeside summer kitchen, which could be a misnomer as it’s heated and a delight to cook in during the winter months too. Perhaps grill some of your own freshly-caught fish in the wood fire here. 

Inside, this home has all the trappings of a traditional log cabin – antler candelabra, whitewashed log walls on display and a wood-burning stove at the heart of the home. A picture-frame window displays the snowy landscape proudly, particularly enjoyable when curled up with a cup of cocoa on the L-shaped sofa. A full kitchen provides everything you need for self-catering, and the closest shop is a ten-minute snowmobile ride (or even-minute drive) away in Vanttauskoski.

Traverse the perfect pistes and tantalising trails of Finland’s largest ski resort in magical Lapland. This cosy apartment is in an Alpine-style stone house just 150m from the main slope, so during ski season you can pretty much rise and glide. Check the weather from your living room window — if it’s a whiteout, then swap the slopes for a pamper day at one of the nearby spas or catch a movie in the local cinema. In summer once the snow has melted, the twenty-four hours of sunshine illuminate the lush green fells, while shorter winter days are for sleigh rides, snowmobile safaris and hunting the Northern Lights. After a day packed with outdoor adventures, soothe tired muscles in your private sauna. When it’s time for apres-ski activities (whether you’ve actually hit the slopes or not), there’s a restaurant on the ground floor that plays live music — don’t worry, the apartment is well soundproofed. Once you’re warmed up, you can head next door to the karaoke bar to belt out a tune, although it might take some Dutch (or in this case, Finnish) courage. If a cosy night in is more your style, then why not gather around the dining table for a homecooked meal before sipping a nightcap on the glazed balcony with a view of the pine trees.

Now, this is what you call a log cabin: a striking, sturdy wooden home, made from centuries-old Kelo wood. In case you’re wondering (we were), Kelo is an old, dried-out pine tree that’s shed its bark. It’s a natural antique, unique to the arctic region. And this home has it in double-height abundance. If it wasn’t for the wood, there’d be an echo inside the vast living space, but the rough edges and super-smooth panelling combine to give this home warmth. The wood burner and customary sauna help too, of course. There’s a generous covered porch for kicking off your kit after a day on the slopes, and a ski waxing room so you can prep for the next day. All told, it’s a fabulous family space inside a great big chunk of tree, conveniently located for the ski bus.

If you're looking for a remote location to escape the fuss and flutter of daily life, then this cosy cabin on the banks of Lake Akanjärvi is sure to fit the bill. Set in the woodlands, just over twenty minutes from the resort town of Levi, this home offers the best of both worlds – isolation, tranquillity, and yet only a short drive from civilisation. Plus, there's the added bonus of being a mere 40-metres from a natural beach, shared with neighbouring cabins. It's the perfect spot to get away from it all and embrace the slow pace of the Finnish countryside. We love how the scandi-style interiors give off a modern look, while the plump grey sofas, animal print rugs, wooden structure and stone hearth fireplace keep things extra snug. Enter into the height of hygge with your very own sauna – whether you've been out slaloming the slopes or idling by the water, a detox will provide that healthy, holiday glow feeling in no time at all. Outside of the home, views of the Northern lights are visible (time and weather permitting), while the charming nearby town of Kittilä has a 19th-century wooden church, authentic restaurants and bars, a twenty-three-minute drive away.

In the southernmost fell in Finland, you will find this simple, cabin-like dwelling. The apartment is in a semi-detached house, offering you all the privacy of a home. The humble interiors are bright and wood-panelled, for a cosy time in the woods. Outside, there is a covered terrace and grilling hut for prepping fresh meals while you listen to birds whistle or watch the snow falling. The home is not far from the slopes; the freshly groomed trails of Pikku-Syöte await. In the summer, explore the endless green expanse of Syöte National Park, plentiful berries, and midnight sun over the stunning nearby lakes. Last but certainly not least, the home has its own sauna, for a true Finnish experience after a day in the wilderness.

Three extra beds in the balcony area give options for families and friends sharing an enchanting break, and there’s a sauna for the full Finnish experience. You’re within walking distance (20 minutes) of Levi Centre, so you can ditch the car if you’re happy to stay local. With ski slopes, snowmobile tracks and cross-country ski trails galore, we don’t see why you’d want to go anywhere else.

There's plenty of rural charm inside, with reindeer skins on the walls, wooden beams and comfy furniture where you can get cosy on chilly evenings. Light up the fire and curl up on the sofa with a glass of wine, or serve up some family favourites at the long dining table. Outside you'll find a patio area if the weather is mild enough to dine alfresco, and you can round off your day as the Finns do with a relaxing session in the private sauna.

When the day is drawing to a close and the chill in your toes has you calling for warmth, head on home and relax in your private sauna, or snuggle up on the sofa, toasting marshmallows by the fireplace. For guests with children, a little quiet time is just around the corner as the PlayStation 2 and its arsenal of games will keep the kids entertained.

Perched on the banks of lake Yli-Suolijärvi in northern Finland, this recently-finished cabin is a wonderful place for a wintery escape. There are four pairs of snowshoes, as well as a bobsleigh, sledges and sliders available for guests to use to explore the immediate vicinity. Kirintövaara resort takes twenty minutes to reach in the car, as does Riisitunturi National Park. And then, once you've spent a few hours having fun in the snow, you can return to the home to warm up. This being Finland, there's a sauna in the house for you to take advantage of, but there's also underfloor heating and a hot tub outside, if you're feeling particularly brave. After a hearty dinner prepared in the minimalist kitchen, we can imagine no more satisfying end to the day than lounging about on the leather sofas and watching the snow fall through the window that takes up one side of the living room.

Whatever the season, there's plenty of natural beauty to bathe in here.

Wake up to frosted Nordic spruces and falling snowflakes glittering on the horizon when staying in this semi-detached cabin in Kolari. With wood-panelling inside and the Alpine forests surrounding you, you won't see the wood for the trees sat on the covered terrace with a cup of coffee; a fully immersive forest experience.  Bring along a pair of cross-country skis (there’s a shared drying room for storage) and explore the snow-blanketed trails on your doorstep. As you are in Lapland, try to spot a reindeer or even arrange a husky sleigh experience. The ski lift to the slopes of Äkäslompolo is less than 10 minutes drive away. Come back to your cosy home and warm up in the sauna before preparing dinner by the fireplace and then heading out on the hunt for the Northern Lights. There’s a little wooden fire-pit hut in the garden so you can spend the evening amongst the trees, even after the sun has dipped below the horizon.
