Enjoy the views from the dining area over a family meal, or from the balcony as you savour the cool breeze. The ski area is a short walk away – you can reach it just by crossing the road. Get your skis out and have a blast with family and friends on the slopes and warm up once you’re back home with a hot chocolate by the fire and a relaxing session in the sauna.

Start each day the right way with a mug of something hot and a belly full of delicious local delights before grabbing your skis and heading to the slopes, which can be reached in a short eight-minute drive from the cottage. When the day is drawing to a close and the chill in your toes has you calling for warmth, head on home and relax in your private sauna, or snuggle up on the sofa, toasting marshmallows by the fireplace. For guests with children, a little quiet time is just around the corner as the PlayStation 2 and its arsenal of games will keep the kids entertained.

Skiing in Finland is an experience all lovers of the slopes should enjoy at some point, with thick snow and fairytale forests. This mountain home is within walking distance of the excellent Masto runs, with views far across the rocky landscape. Within a striking modern building, it's stone and dark grey cladding is an imposing sight. Inside, you'll be wowed by its floor-to-ceiling windows, its double height main room and its stylish Scandi design features. Warm up around the fire, pull up a chair and read by the window, or treat yourself to time alone in the private sauna. If you're here for the skiing, it's practically on your doorstep, and there's lockable ski storage outside. Visit in the summer for a very different view, with lush green hills perfect for hiking.

This uber-stylish modern home is set deep in the forest. Flanked on all sides by tall pine trees, the floor-to-ceiling double-height windows mean that these evergreens become very much a part of the house. From almost every room, the expanse of glass brings the outside in. You’ll feel like you’re in your own tree house here, albeit a decidedly luxurious one. Inside, the natural tones of slate, leather, stone and wood evoke a classically Scandinavian feel, and the high vaulted ceilings give a real sense of light and space. Whether winter or summer, the woods are a joy to explore, and the nearby lake is perfect for a summer swim. This home comes with the option of hiring a canoe for lake adventures, or skinned skis for wintery trails dusted with snow. Whatever the season, the sauna will be a welcome relief for tired muscles and a great way to unwind after a day out in the great outdoors.

This recently renovated log cabin is the ideal place to press pause on everyday life and immerse yourself in nature. Located in the Kuusamo region of Finland, it's part of a small collection of holiday homes and offers perfect peace where you can kick back and relax with your favourite people. 

There's plenty of rural charm inside, with reindeer skins on the walls, wooden beams and comfy furniture where you can get cosy on chilly evenings. Light up the fire and curl up on the sofa with a glass of wine, or serve up some family favourites at the long dining table. Outside you'll find a patio area if the weather is mild enough to dine alfresco, and you can round off your day as the Finns do with a relaxing session in the private sauna. 

It would be easy to spend your whole trip simply relaxing in these tranquil surroundings, but if you want to explore the area then there is plenty to do. Thrill-seekers can enjoy a day on the mountain at Ruka Ski Resort – it's just a three-minute drive away from your front door. In the warmer months, you can hike or cycle, through the rugged landscapes, and if you're good at fishing then you can even catch your dinner at one of the nearby lakes.

This cosy apartment near Ruka is the best of both worlds. Surrounded by lush Finnish forests, at the foot of nearby ski trails, and facing the stunning Lake Talvijärvi, it's got outdoor activities for every day of the week – no matter the season. Wood and stone accents and a neutral colour palette give this home a rustic cabin-like feel that blends perfectly with the great outdoors. A comfortable base, with everything you could need, we love the private terrace and the traditional fireplace. After a day of adventures, soothe your muscles in the electric sauna before settling down for a movie night. If you'd prefer to get out and about, head into Ruka. One of the largest ski resorts in the country, it's got dozens of shops and restaurants to explore. In the winter it's all about skiing but visit in the summer for hiking, kayaking, fishing and much more.

There’s more to Finland than great skiing, but this log-built home near Ruka, surrounded by forest and near the Masto ski slopes, makes for a pretty perfect vacation spot. Inside, this modern home is cosy and comfortable, with a fireplace in the living area and a big wooden table for meals with the family. The cabin is walking distance from public transport and the nearest ski lift, and if you venture a bit further, you'll find plenty of wilderness and National parks. The humble interiors are bright and wood-panelled, for a cosy time in the woods. Outside, there is a covered terrace and grilling hut for prepping fresh meals while you listen to birds whistle or watch the snow falling. The home is not far from the slopes; the freshly groomed trails of Pikku-Syöte await. In the summer, explore the endless green expanse of Syöte National Park, plentiful berries, and midnight sun over the stunning nearby lakes. Last but certainly not least, the home has its own sauna, for a true Finnish experience after a day in the wilderness.

Just a short drive south from the centre of Posio, the adventure begins from the moment of arrival. Surrounded by trees with idyllic views across the lake, this is the kind of space that feels instantly welcoming. From the traditional wood design to the simple styling, every detail celebrates the natural abundance of the environment. 

Stepping outside, you’ll find a little boat ready to take you across the lake. But if you feel like staying on dry land, the wood-burning sauna is the perfect spot to relax and unwind. 

From here, days can be spent hiking through the nearby Hirsiniemi region, wild swimming, sightseeing and visiting the resident reindeer at Valkean Peuran Valtakunta (just a short drive away).

There are more bears and reindeer than residents in Salla, so it’s no wonder the Finnish government plan to turn this area into a National Park. Tucked into the wilderness, this cosy cabin is perfect for adventurers. In the winter, head to nearby Salla ski resort to hit the fresh powder, and in the summer explore the hiking and biking routes in the pristine forest that surrounds you. After an activity-filled day, relax in the in-house sauna or curl up in front of the stove in the living room. We love the airy yet rustic feel of this home, with its muted colour palette, light-wood walls, open-plan living space and artworks that pay homage to Lapland’s beautiful vistas. To experience the real thing, head to the shared barbecue hut by the pond, and have an unforgettable outdoor meal.

A stay in Lapland is all about the scenery, and this place in Sallatunturi doesn't disappoint. Surrounded by pristine forest, ponds and lakes, it's in a tourist resort south of Salla. Perfect for skiers (the Salla Ski Resort is just a five-minute drive away) and for hikers (it's set in the newly formed Salla National Park), it's a stunning part of the country, just an hour and a half from Kuusamo Airport. A cabin-style, ground floor apartment in a small resort, it's a modern and super comfortable way to experience life beyond the Arctic Circle. Here, the hassles of day-to-day life melt away in the home's private sauna or in front of the wood-burning stove. Step out onto your terrace each day and breathe in the freshest of air, while breakfast cooks in the fully kitted-out kitchen. With plenty of room for a family, you can relax in the warm, timber home after a day out adventuring. Then head down to the pond where you'll find a traditional shared cooking hut. Out and about you'll find plenty to do – go husky sledging or reindeer riding at the nearby Salla Reindeer Park, visit the local war museum to learn about the Battle of Salla or go white water rafting on the Oulanka River. You may even spot the Northern Lights overhead in the evenings.

Perched on the banks of lake Yli-Suolijärvi in northern Finland, this recently-finished cabin is a wonderful place for a wintery escape. There are four pairs of snowshoes, as well as a bobsleigh, sledges and sliders available for guests to use to explore the immediate vicinity. Kirintövaara resort takes twenty minutes to reach in the car, as does Riisitunturi National Park. And then, once you've spent a few hours having fun in the snow, you can return to the home to warm up. This being Finland, there's a sauna in the house for you to take advantage of, but there's also underfloor heating and a hot tub outside, if you're feeling particularly brave. After a hearty dinner prepared in the minimalist kitchen, we can imagine no more satisfying end to the day than lounging about on the leather sofas and watching the snow fall through the window that takes up one side of the living room.

Saint Nicholas

This lakeside log cabin is surrounded by slender pines and feels wonderfully remote and private. The home itself is sturdily built to withstand the northern winters, while plenty of expansive windows let light flood in from between the trees. Geothermal heating keeps this home snug whatever the season, and there’s an indoor sauna for turning up the heat even more. Outside you’re within a stone’s throw of the vast Lake Livojärvi with its silver waters and soft sandy beaches. The lake makes this home ideal for a summer holiday with children, as it is both shallow and safe. There’s even a house rowboat for adventures across the water. Winter visitors can enjoy snowmobile trails, winter hiking and skiing at Kiri, around a twenty-minute drive away. A true winter wonderland.
