If you're looking for an instant way to slow down and reconnect with life outside of a screen, you've come to the right cabin. Perched on the edge of lake Aitjärvi, this house of logs is all about feeling relaxed and at one with nature. Of course, there is a TV and Wifi but we won't tell the kids if you don't. To make the most out of your stay we recommend taking your morning cuppa on the terrace while birds sing overhead, going for meandering walks in the woods and cooking all your meals on the fire pit (even though there's a perfectly good oven). In the colder months, those double-height windows are perfect for gawping at how beautiful everything looks blanketed in snow and, if you do venture out, remember there's a sauna to warm up in after. This no-frills cabin is pleasingly functional, which will no doubt appeal to anyone with kids in tow. And if that wasn't enough, the secluded location, rowing boat and endless fishing opportunities should clinch the deal.

A lake right outside your home, views of the majestic surroundings, a sauna and an outdoor dining area with a barbecue grill sounds ideal to us. Boat rides on the water, pre-breakfast walks along the lakeside and afternoons on the pier with undisturbed hours of sunbathing is not a bad way to spend the day. Inside this typical wood-clad cabin you can cosy up on the sofa and watch TV while a fire crackles in the living room. There’s no forgetting the forest, even when you’re indoors, as a big bay window looks out into the trees. Unwind in the private sauna, and perhaps dunk into the lake to cool off after, proper Finnish style. The owner's farm next door has a farm shop for supplies and you can hire Shetland ponies for a fun day out with the kids.

If we were constructing a home in such an idyllic location, we would have done the same thing as the person behind this log cabin on the edge of Lake Saimaa did and put as many windows in as humanly possible. When it comes to views, there's no bad seat in the cabin, which was only built in 2020 and comes packed with modern, monochromatic furnishings. However, it's possible to get closer still to the natural beauty out through the glass doors. Here, guests can choose between sitting on the covered terrace, lounging on the pier or taking a perch around the fire pit area. It's also outside where the separate sauna outhouse is found. Powered by a wood-burning stove and using water pumped from the lake, there's also a dressing room in here and another huge window gazing out to the tranquil waters. After a morning sweat, borrow the rowboat and take a paddle around the lake. Alternatively, drive twenty-five minutes to Ruokolahden Freeski Ky and tackle the slopes.

At first glance, this might seem like a charming, rustic wood cabin in a stunning lakeside setting – which it is. But head inside for a pleasingly unexpected vibe. We’re talking lavish interiors so polished and trendy you’ll think you stepped onto an Elle Decor shoot, but with added ‘hygge’. For every cool, white leather armchair there is a cosy rug to sink your toes into. For every insta-worthy light fitting, there is a candlestick or a huge open fireplace. The newly fitted kitchen comes fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. 

Take a glass of wine out to the front terrace and soak in the wood-fired outdoor bathtub, with lake Saimaa by your side – utter bliss. When you’re not gallivanting around the lake in your boat (included with the cabin), settle into the sauna. Then fire up the gas barbecue and grill a fish caught that day. This is as remote as they come, so make sure you stock up on supplies before you arrive. Then simply enjoy the peace and serenity.

Perched on the sprawling banks of Lake Saimaa, this cabin has everything you might need for a tranquil getaway from the stresses of daily life. The timber-heavy interior sticks to a peaceful colour palette of neutrals and features a wood-burning fireplace to gather around when the night draws in. The large white kitchen complete with an island is pretty impressive, too. Stepping out the front door, there's a covered porch at the front of the house, which has a table and barbecue for dinner with a lakeside view. Closer to the water, there's a sauna outbuilding with a wood-burner stove, kitchenette and separate lounge. There's an additional sauna — an electric one — in the main home for good measure. With the largest lake in the country starting just metres away, you can rent standup paddleboards and boats with outboard motors from the host, as well as fatbikes to ride around the banks. Alternatively, why not take up the option of renting a mobile hot tub and gazing at the stars instead?

Nestled away on the banks of Lake Saimaa, this log cabin has to be one of the more picturesque homes in our collection. There's a real sense of rural isolation here, with nothing but forest and large expanses of peaceful water for company. The home has a rowboat and a pier if you fancy exploring, but there's also the option to hire paddleboards, outboard motors and fatbikes for doing so at speed. Back inside, you can warm up from the day's excursions in the sauna — this is Finland, after all — or next to the fireplace in the living room with views of the great outdoors from the large windows. If it's warm enough to stay outside for a little longer, there are a multitude of spots from which to enjoy the tranquillity, whether it's on the balcony, the swing seat in the garden or perched around the fire pit. The nearest large town is Savonlinna — about an hour's drive away — which has an annual opera festival held in a medieval castle.

The separate lakeside sauna house is perfectly placed for indulging in some Finnish sauna traditions. A short dash down the wooden steps and you can plunge into the cool blue of Lake Päijänne. If you prefer to be on the water, rather than in it, hop into the little rowing boat for a bit of bobbing along. The lofty wooden home is only a little further up the bank, with a year-round hot tub just outside, and another sauna inside. There’s a generous wooden verandah from where you can survey the pretty lake views through the spindly, silvery pine trees. Out here, there’s space to enjoy the long evenings or starry skies and a gas barbecue to ensure you don’t go hungry. Inside, the double-height living space is grand but cosy, with floor-to-ceiling honey-coloured pine and a warming wood burner. Cook up a family feast in the in the generously sized kitchen after a day exploring the Päijänne National Park, hiking the Pulkkilanharju nature trail or cruising the inland waterways.
