The rocky and sandy beach is immediately outside your front door and there are plenty of wonderful amenities between the apartment and the water’s edge. Kasnäs harbour is on your doorstep, where you can rent boats, catch the ferry to the other southern islands, and stock up at the small grocery shop. Start your morning with a cup of coffee on the wooded private porch, before heading out to spend a day by the lake. You’ll have a communal sauna and lounge at your disposal, plus a shared barbecue area that’s an ideal place to make a few friends. Surrounded by nature, you're practically on the lake, and have all the comforts of a contemporary home. You might expect lakeside living to be rustic, but the slatted white walls mixed with moody dark furniture and sporadic plants give living here a Scandi-chic element. Start your days with coffee on the private porch against the crisp air, before heading to the communal wood heated sauna and lounge by the lake. You can rent a boat and explore the area on water, while the shared barbecue area is the perfect place to meet like-minded travellers and soak in the island atmosphere over some dinner. Then settle in for the night, snug in your lakeside home.

We're not in Kansas anymore, but rather Kasnäs, a picturesque village on one of the countless islets that make up the Hitis archipelago in southern Finland. The area has everything you might need for a relaxing holiday, from spa services and swimming pools to tennis courts and mini-golf. Go for a walk through the woods and settle with a picnic on the rocks by the water. Hop between islands via the ferry and play an 18-hole golf course on Kemiönsaari. Unwind in the community sauna, before retreating home. Inside your apartment, you'll find whitewashed timber-boarded interiors and contemporary furnishings that come together to create a cosy space. The kitchen is well equipped, but there's a shared barbecue available to use too if you'd prefer. Relax and enjoy your meal on the terrace, while taking in the calm and scenic setting.

There’s a quiet beauty about Finland’s archipelago in the Baltic Sea. The largest collection of islands in the world (there are more than 20,000), a stay here guarantees an unhurried lifestyle by the lapping waves. And you’ll certainly get the chance to relax and recharge at this cute lakeside cabin in Kasnäs. Set right at the water’s edge with its own jetty, this home looks rustic and simple (bar the distinctive slick of red paint) from the outside. But inside you’ll find a contemporary space that looks more like it’s jumped out of the pages of an interior design magazine. We love the soft grey walls, the wood-and-metal furniture, the lush houseplants and bold geometric print soft furnishings. The open-plan living/dining space is particularly calming; it's flooded with light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, which also give you wonderful views across the lake. Outside you’re lucky enough to have access to your own waterfront terrace, a semi-private beach, a shared barbecue pit and a sauna right by the lake. Here you only need concern yourself with the simple things. Where to go for dinner, what time to go for a swim and what drink to pour when six o'clock rolls around. Bliss.

Wooden walls are sparsely decorated, rather a few corners offer space to cuddle up. Curl up on the L-shaped sofa, sit back and soak up the sunshine on the small veranda or - for true Finnish style, the electric sauna in the bathroom is perfect for sweating it out. If you're after something more communal, there's also a wood-fire sauna closer to the water, which is shared with the surrounding homes.

On the edge of the Hitis archipelago, there's much for sporty travellers to enjoy here, whether you want to discover the hiking trails or take a boat ride to the nearby islands. Step inside to find a light-filled open-plan living room and kitchen, with a comfy sofa inviting you to kick back and relax gazing at the instantly calming lake views outside. There’s also a sauna here for those moments of self-pampering before you head off to the comfy bedroom for a night of restful sleep. Additional sleeping places are available up in the loft, although you’ll have to mind your head here! 

Wake up restored and start your day with a cup of freshly brewed coffee out on the patio and plan your adventures. There are a lot of water sports to be enjoyed on the lake, as well as plenty of gorgeous nature walks in the surrounding woods. Drive to the coast for some spectacular dunes and islands.
