If you're here during the warmer months, there's both a balcony and a terrace on which you can sit out and admire the beautiful scenery. On the other hand, a visit during the snowy season can only mean one thing – skiing. The home has a ski room complete with a boot dryer and there are lifts up to the slopes starting as nearby as three minutes' walk away. Elsewhere in the town, you'll find restaurants, a cinema and a museum to keep you occupied, too.

On the outskirts of the ski town of Megève, this chalet home sits 800 metres from the aprés ski bars, rustic Alpine restaurants and ski lifts of the village centre. Towering mountains surround you on all sides, with slopes for every level at the top. Getting to the slopes is easy, with the ski bus running 150 metres from this home’s front door.

After a day skiing, snowboarding or hiking the Alpine trails, you can return to this home and indulge in a soak in the hot tub on the terrace, or unwind in one of two saunas. In summer, you can enjoy a beautiful view of verdant green mountains from the balcony, or a snow-covered scene in winter. Inside, it’s a vision of knotted wood with carved wooden hearts throughout for that old-time farmhouse feel. The lounge, set around a solid stone fireplace, is the perfect spot to cosy up on chilly winter’s evenings with a mug of something hot and bedrooms tucked beneath wooden eaves feel like secret hideaways.

It’s a ten-minute walk from the centre of Megève and its position on a hillside, near Chemin du Calvaire, means in season you have ski-in, ski-out access. A stay here is like having your own luxury hotel and clubhouse all in one. It’s ideal for corporate getaways, with a seminar room and team-building activities galore – archery in the garden, a boules court and even a full climbing wall. 

The motto here could be “work hard, play hard” or simply “play hard” as the living room (a vision of chalet-chic and hygge during the day) can be transformed into a dance floor with a projector and fully-stocked wet bar. In this huge, open space you’ve also got a pool table and arcade games. Then there’s the separate cinema room and poker table. 

Like any 5-star hotel, you’ve got a spa and swimming pool all to yourself. The indoor pool with its wave machine and hot waterfall is perfect for winter as snow tumbles outside and days on the slopes can be remedied with sessions in the Turkish hammam, sauna and massage room. In summer, the outdoor pool surrounded by pines is perfect for a cooling dip and there’s banquet-sized dining for the group beneath double gazebos. Each outdoor terrace and balcony feels secluded by towering trees and the alpine garden with its rockeries is a delight to explore.

Finally, there are the bedrooms. Each one is like a fairytale come to life with wood-carved beds and pine-clad walls. Even the ensuites feel as though they’ve been carved out of Alpine wood by hand. 

Rascal Among the Pines

Overlooking the Alpine village of Megève, this spectacular chalet is home to panoramic views and world class amenities. While the décor is in traditional Alpine style, with wooden beams, vaulted ceilings and sheepskin throws aplenty, there’s a hearty injection of decadence, too. The basement has been converted into a luxurious wellness area. Work up a sweat on the treadmill, or simply swim lengths in the spa pool, with its ambient lighting and in-built jacuzzi. After a day of skiing or hiking, relax your muscles with a massage and brighten your glow with a hammam treatment.  Huge glass windows upstairs mean you can soak up views of the mountains, including Mont Blanc, from your sofa. 

On warmer days, make use of the wraparound terrace and dine alfresco in the sunshine. With seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms, there’s plenty of space and privacy for everyone. The centre of Megève is within walking distance, where you’ll find French restaurants, bakeries, and supermarkets. In the winter months, drive five minutes to hit the slopes at the Megève ski resort. Come spring, the landscape turns glowing green, and Alpine flowers begin to blossom. There are breathtaking hiking trails nearby as well as Luge 4S, a summer toboggan run which the kids will adore 800 metres from the house. After a day of adventures, cosy up together in the cinema room for a hard earned movie. Whatever the season, this chalet has all the elements for an unforgettable holiday.

The Sanctuary Chalet

Whether hiking and biking through the mountains over the summer or clipping into your skis during the winter, this spectacular four-bedroom chalet is ideal for families and groups of friends hoping to experience everything the French Alps offer.

Elsewhere, bedrooms are divided between the ground and second floors, making for a perfect layout for a couple of families. The smaller ground-floor rooms are ideal for the kids to run around and make a racket, while the super king-size top-floor rooms make for soothing adult-only sanctuaries.

Extraordinarily, in our opinion, Megève seems to fly under the radar of many mountain sports enthusiasts. However, most visitors here will find more than enough terrain to keep them entertained for a week of skiing and snowboarding. In addition, its proximity to Chamonix opens up a host of off-piste options for the pros among your group. Its stunning setting – in the shadow of Mont Blanc – makes it a fantastic summer escape, too, with golf and plenty of hiking routes, plus rafting, paragliding, and mountain biking for the thrill seekers.

King of the Alps

While it's not the single most important consideration, a skiing holiday can be drastically improved with close proximity to the white stuff. With that in mind, we would just like to mention that this chalet on the outskirts of Megève sits a grand total of a hundred metres from the slopes of Rochebrune.

Of course, that's not the only factor at play – in fact, it might even be a little irrelevant if you're planning to pay a visit during the warmer months. Thankfully, the home itself is of such stellar quality that it would be well worth a visit regardless of location. The open layout of the ground floor is flooded with natural light from the large windows that run along each side, as well as offering some rather spectacular views of the Alpine scenery. Of course, you can take in this landscape with the sunshine on your skin by stepping out onto the home's terrace or wandering through the garden.

Throughout the rest of the living quarters, guests will find a superb collection of amenities that will make their holiday that little bit better. Down on the lower ground level, for instance, the gym will appeal to fitness fanatics and the Jacuzzi to those that like to take things easy, After a day in the great outdoors, a session in the sauna will see you right, as will a session in the whirlpool bathtub or a stint by the roaring fireplace.
