Originally built as an old farmhouse, this beautiful home combines rustic charm with a light colour palette to create a space that feels both cosy and light, and certainly inviting enough for you to relax in. 

We can imagine lazy starts followed by freshly-brewed coffee at the dining table, right next to the statement fireplace. Unfortunately not in working order anymore, the design of the old hearth is still a beautiful focal point to the dining space. Scramble eggs in the minimal kitchen to enjoy alongside fresh croissants, cheese, and caffeine before getting ready for a day of exploration. 

Venture to Cadran Solaire – only minutes away by car – where you can hike the trails and explore the native foliage. In Nérac, about fifteen minutes away, you’ll find the night market and open-air cinema, but it’s also a great place to grab a bite to eat during the day. 

On those days where you find your itinerary completely clear, you’ll delight in the peace on offer at this home. Open the curved doors of the living room and read on the sofa, or head outside where you can walk the grounds until you find the perfect spot for an impromptu picnic. Enjoy sunset drinks on the terrace, barbecued dinners, and collapse onto the lawn every now and again for late-night stargazing.

We love the mix of old and new in this charming country house on the outskirts of Mimizan. Glass panels sit above beamed ceilings, skylights have been added to the slanted roof, and French doors flood the open living space with sunshine. Bedrooms are strikingly modern, the attic room paying homage to the ocean with a monochrome beach print and knotted lamp stands, while the master's sliding doors open up to a large en-suite with a huge rainfall shower. On cooler days, the feature fireplace is the perfect place to warm up – though bright sunflower prints give the impression of an endless summer. This home has an abundance of options for keeping you entertained throughout your stay, from racing down the zip line for an adrenaline rush to boating along the little lake for a relaxing day drifting along, lured by your favourite book. One of the best things about Pilgrims & Wine is the way it balances its old-timey charm with modern luxuries, which results in a villa that looks a lit like an ancient Roman holiday home — and we love it. Think raw stone, doors that open outwards onto terraces, a huge pool with its own little shelter, and plenty of nooks for reading and working on your tan. Since there's quite a lot of space, we recommend this one for longer stays where the balance between autonomy and socialising is as important as the fact that you'll be staying far from city noise. When you're not walking around the vast gardens and admiring the far-reaching views, walk (or drive) down to the nearby Lauzerte. Frequently named one of France's ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, it's full of delightful restaurants, shops, and cafes. The twin rooms are ideal for kids who can more easily manoeuvre around the sloped ceilings, and there is a ski locker available for storing your gear after a day on the snow.

The gardens have formal, manicured lawns and sunny terraces, as well as meadows, orchards and a lake to explore, so it's easy to find your favourite spot to read a book. Spend idyllic days in the heated saltwater pool – this area is a suntrap, so two tented gazebos are provided for well-needed shade. Later, go fishing at the lake or watch the stunning sunsets with an alfresco dinner. This place is perfect for a family or group of friends looking for a wonderful holiday home or those celebrating a special event.

Inside, as you'd expect, all the rooms are large and spacious, furnished with French antiques. We love the chandeliers, original tiles in the hall and the romantic bedrooms. Our choice would be one of those in the tower – no wait, probably the four-poster with French windows overlooking the swimming pool. The stylish kitchen is primed for your entertaining needs with a large American fridge-freezer and modern appliances, but why not let your host arrange a private chef to cater for your dinner parties. 

Or head to the restaurant in the village of Laugnac, a fifteen-minute walk or two-minute drive away. There's a boulangerie and bar here too. For more choice, the bustling town of Agen, on the banks of the Garonne, is just over twenty minutes in the car.

In the winter months, the Baqueira/Beret ski resort is seven kilometres away. It’s widely acknowledged to be Spain’s best ski resort, with 167km of pistes. After hitting the slopes, head to one of the lively apres-ski spots in the area, or come home to Arties for tapas and wine, before taking a relaxing bubble bath and curling up by the fire.
