This pretty half-timbered house from the 17th century is located right in the heart of the fairytale-esque Breton town of Dinan and comfortably accommodates up to four guests in its quirky, lovingly-decorated interior that boast its own unique character. 

With a charming blend of original wood features, painted frescos, eye-catching mosaic tiles, and picture frame windows that let in plenty of light, the home feels like it has been lifted from the pages of a Brothers Grimm fairytale. Open up the windows on the ground floor and be greeted by the gentle hum of everyday French village life beyond its pane, allowing the sunlight to stream in whilst you linger over breakfast or a book. 

Step over the threshold and you'll find yourself in the midst of things here in Dinan, with everything from boulangeries to historical attractions right on your doorstep, whilst the coast and its iconic towns such as Saint-Malo are just a short drive away.

A stone's throw from the sandy beaches of Cancale, in the picture-pretty bay of Port Mer, this charming home offers the very best of coastal living. Boasting a gorgeous garden with plenty of cosy spots to sit down and breathe in the salty sea air, start your days with coffee on the lawn while watching the boats sail by. 

If you want to see the ocean up close, the beach is less than 1km away – take a walk down to the golden sands to discover what the famous Emerald Coast has to offer. When you're feeling peckish, Cancale oysters are a must-try. Head to one of the local restaurants or buy some from the Mont Saint-Michel oyster market and take them home to prepare yourself. We highly recommend an alfresco dinner on the terrace, washed down with a glass of French wine. When you're finished, head up to the terrace to watch the sunset – the waterfront views have to be seen to be believed. 

When darkness falls, head inside to cuddle up on the sumptuous sofa to watch a movie. If you're travelling with little ones, the mezzanine level dens are the perfect place for a bedtime story to make sure they settle in for a good night's sleep.

Sitting within the winding network of historic streets in the Intra-Muros neighbourhood of Saint-Malo, you couldn't ask for a better spot in the Brittany seaside town. Everything from Eventail beach to the cathedral lies within walkable distance, while there's even a rather peaceful view of the English Channel – or La Manche, depending on your disposition – out through the window. 

The apartment itself is humbly sized, sure, but we're impressed by the simple and contemporary design found behind the front door. White walls and smart wooden floors are a timeless combo, while the furnishings, lighting and artwork selection are subtle and unshowy – and all the more chic for it. It's the sort of space that's sure to give you a bit of inspo for when you're next doing up your home address.

As mentioned, you don't have to venture far to find some of Saint-Malo's big sights, but once you've exhausted the small town – which might take longer than you think – you can catch a ferry over to Dinard on the other side of La Rance for more beaches and historic architecture.

At low tide, discover the Grand Bé after basking in the sunshine on Plage de Bon-Secours. Finish the day with a feast of Breton cuisine followed by a glass or two of wine in a local restaurant.

The kitchen, with the same eye-catching exposed stone detailing which runs throughout the property, provides a great place for everyone to come together and prepare a meal based on Breton specialities, including the freshest local seafood pulled from the water which lies just a stone’s throw away. For those with a hankering for vitamin-sea, the superb wide sandy beach of La Guimorais is just 5-minutes’ walk from the property.

Make your way upstairs and you will find two beautifully decorated bedrooms, each of which is filled with light and a feeling of height, thanks to its sloping loft ceilings that reach up into the eaves of the old building. Old stonework contrasts with cool contemporary wallpaper in the master bedroom, continuing the theme of ‘old-meets-new’ which makes the home so captivating, and an elegant standalone bathtub provides an extra unique touch. Imagine soaking in the bath in the comfort of your bedroom, looking out of the opposite window as dusk falls, before heading back downstairs and out onto the terrace for a glass of wine or an alfresco barbecue as evening turns to night.

You’ll find everything you could need during your stay in the delightful village of Saint Coulomb, just 2.5 kilometres from the property, whilst the iconic seaside town of Saint Malo with its historical walled centre and tidal fortress is but 10 kilometres away.

Located in a former hotel, this apartment has breathtaking sea views. We particularly love the main bedroom with its four-poster bed and ocean vistas (there's also an office area here if you want to write a travel blog or catch up on work). In fact, there are sea views to enjoy from most rooms. The highlight, though, for us, is the private garden area around the apartment – you have a terrace and garden furniture for alfresco meals – it's a great space overlooking the Grande Plage, as well as the Pointe de la Garde.

Spend idyllic days on the Grande Plage on your doorstep or indulge in some water sports such as surfing, paddleboarding or take some catamaran lessons. If you fancy exploring further afield, then Cape Fréhel, to the west, is perfect for bird watchers, or the nearby charming resort of Saint-Cast-le-Guildo has a small port and coastal paths.

In the autumn, Rennes Forest really comes to life. Take an afternoon stroll beneath the golden leaves and give mushroom picking a try – ingredients don’t get any fresher than this. For the more adventurous travellers, there are plenty of hiking and biking trails nearby – it's a great way to see more of the natural wonders on offer.

Spend the evenings watching movies in front of a roaring fire (this home comes with its own pellet stove) or ease your muscles after a day of exploring in the private sauna. With nods to its history through exposed beams and brickwork, this recently renovated home has been beautifully modernised, while retaining its charm. The sleek, modern kitchen is a delight to cook in, should you decide an evening at home is preferred over dining out. Climb the spiral staircase and you’ll find two comfortable bedrooms to choose from, both of which guarantee a blissful night’s sleep. A fairly neutral palette is broken up throughout the home with pops of colour, giving the whole space a calming, cosy vibe.

Our favourite part of this home is the terrace. Quite the sun trap during the day, it’s a peaceful place to retreat to as evening sets in. Grab yourself a bottle of fine French wine and settle down on the sofas with your loved ones. As night falls and a blanket of stars breaks out above, listen to the quiet chatter of your loved ones and feel yourself relax. This is where memories are made.
