Yet its position on a farm – complete with cows, donkeys, and chickens – makes it feel like a rustic retreat. Admire Aravis mountain views from the vine- and rose-covered balcony, or soak in the hot tub on the sheltered terrace. Kids will enjoy the swings and table football. The owner’s brother lives in the basement apartment of this home; he has his own entrance so your privacy shouldn’t be affected.

The accommodation is over three floors, and all of the rooms capitalise on the wonderful vistas. Three bedrooms have access to a balcony, while the spacious fourth on the top floor has a seating and workout area. If you want to do some winter sports, the ski resorts of La Sambuy and Semnoz are just under thirty minutes away. In summer, there's a lakeside beach just 2 kilometres from this home, and the Voie Verte cycle and footpath passes the door.

Close to some of Lyon's best museums, this modern home is the perfect base for a couple, solo traveller or even a small family. Set in a new, well-equipped building in the heart of the Monplaisir district, it's the easy option if you want to unpack and start exploring. The big windows mean it's a bright and cheerful space, with contemporary furnishings and a striking Lyon city skyline mural on one wall. The open layout of the living area makes it a sociable place to cook, eat or relax, while the bedroom is quiet and comfortable. Head out the door and you'll find the main shopping district of Lyon, and it couldn't get more convenient, with a mini-market in front of the apartment. There are easy public transport links and it's just steps from the Lumière Museum, in the former home of the inventors of cinema.

Blue may be the colour but it certainly doesn't describe the feeling in this cheerful little home in Lyon's 7th arrondissement. An intimate space for a couple or a solo traveller, it's set in a typical period building with rooftop views all the way to some of the city's most iconic sights. It's not huge, but it's a well-designed home with character and charm. We love the typical French Juliet balconies to either side of the living room and in the bedroom – perfect for opening the whole place up for some fresh air in the summer. There are some quirky touches in the bedroom, with green palm trees breaking up the blue. And the bathroom (you guessed, it's blue) is modern and luxurious. Step outside and you're right in the city's most commercial district, with bars, shops and restaurants all around. Particularly well-placed if you feel like exploring by bike, it's close to the Rhône and its quays.

Just a fifteen-minute walk from Lyon Part Dieu station and its bustling shopping centre, this home's location is perfect for those seeking a spot of retail therapy. It sits in the third arrondissement, best known as the city's commercial quarter. Here, you're well-connected to explore, only seven minutes away from the closest metro stop on foot, and surrounded by an array of shops and restaurants.

Nestled in a quiet street and perched on the fourth floor, you'll feel totally tucked away from the hustle and bustle here. The interior is modern and homely, cloaked in warm earthy tones, while large windows usher in floods of sunlight. When it's time to head out, exploring Lyon comes easy here. In the 1st Arrondissement, close to the prestigious Lyon Museum of Fine Arts, you're in one of the liveliest parts of the city. Reaching the rest of the city is a breeze – you're just 100 metres away from the Hôtel de Ville metro stop. Come the evening, group dinners and drinks are perfectly enjoyable in your apartment, or you can head out to discover the famous gastronomical scene of Lyon. With a grand yet welcoming living space comprising of a kitchen and sociable seating area all flooded with light thanks to the huge French windows, the home feels intimate and warm, whilst exuding a typical kind of French grandeur that – for us – is très magnifique.

Here you'll find yourself close to the Cours de la Liberté with its many restaurants and shops, and you'll have only to cross the Wilson bridge to be on the peninsula itself. Spend days perusing local shops, markets, museums, and galleries, before returning to the cosy comfort and effortless style of your home away from home. Freshen up in the sleek bathroom before venturing out again to make the most of Lyon's vibrant foodie scene, or prepare something homemade in that well-equipped kitchen over a glass or two of wine.
