Our favourite feature, without a doubt, is the private leafy terrace. As it’s heated, you can spend peaceful mornings here with a good book and a cup of coffee or evening drinks as the sun sets, at any time of year. While we wouldn’t blame you for wanting to stay holed up in your arty haven, go out and explore the nearby sights – of which there are many. Explore the trendy Marais district with its vintage shops and cute cafes (a twenty-minute walk), enjoy a picnic in elegant Place des Vosges (a thirteen-minute walk) or discover the quiet beauty of Père Lachaise Cemetery, a twenty-minute stroll from your door.

But straddling the trendy 4th, 11th and 12th, the Bastille quarter of east Paris trades glamour for an exciting selection of galleries, bars, and independent venues. And with Le Marais under twenty minutes away, a bohemian lifestyle continues on foot everywhere you turn. 

Now, let’s start from the top – truly at the top. Your home sits on the seventh floor of a traditional Parisian block, from which the views are simply unmatched. The triple set of windows in the cosy lounge frames the most spectacular scene of rooftops, spires, chimneys, and the Sacré-Cœur in the distance.

If you manage to drag yourself away from the windowsill, the rest of the apartment is another delightful sight. Modern, quirky, and colourful, we love the selection of framed artworks adorning the walls, with a jazzy geometric rug on the floor. There’s a certain airy and fresh atmosphere with white walls and understated furniture, which in our eyes is perfect for one thing – ensuring that the awe-inspiring sunsets over the city are the main event.

Entering the apartment you instantly feel a sense of creativity and style. Striking sculptures stand proud in the living room and splashes of modern art worthy of a place in the Louvre liven up white walls. Big French windows fill the room with light and a bookcase stuffed with paperbacks and curios from around the world adds a homely touch. The kitchen is tucked away, and there’s a vaguely pastoral feeling to the green and honey walls. Spacious double beds are crowned with painted headboards in both bedrooms, so there’s no need to draw straws for the master.

There’s ample storage for longer stays, and the desk means business travellers can set up shop and work remotely.

Shops, restaurants, and all the amenities you'll need are in the area, too. The design back home is practical but comfortable. There's a sofa bed in the living area, a sleek kitchenette, and a bedroom with a desk for remote working. For quick trips, we think it's a great option.

Just across the road from the Seine and a four-minute walk from the historic Place de la Bastille, this chic, modern apartment provides an artsy base from which to explore the city’s most famous sights. Wood floors and contemporary furnishings provide an instantly stylish welcome in the main living space with large windows proffering views of the Bastille. We love the carefully curated design in this room, from the layered pendant lighting above a solid wood table to the blue feature wall and clever mirrored doors that slide back to reveal a sleek kitchenette – ideal for cooking up feasts with fresh produce from Marché Bastille (a six-minute walk). The bedrooms, too, have been styled with a keen eye – we particularly like the master’s Parisian feature wall Factor in the Bluetooth sound system for soirées soundtracked by Edith Piaf, the luxurious rainfall shower and the tub that invites long soaks with a glass of bubbly after a day of sightseeing, and you’re all set for a relaxing time. Speaking of exploring, you’re just a twenty-minute walk from the cool Marais district as well as Notre Dame, a thirty-minute stroll from Père Lachaise Cemetery and a thirty-five-minute walk from the Louvre.

Located just a few minutes' walk from the River Seine and a short stroll from Notre Dame, it's fair to say this Bastille home puts you in the heart of the city. The mismatched vintage objects and artwork throughout reflect the owners' artistic sensibilities (one is a former photographer) and we were fond of the lived-in vibe of the living spaces. With stairs to the entrance and a winding staircase within the home, it's not ideal for those with limited mobility – that said, the higher position grants lovely views of the local area. And while it's unspectacular, the small terrace lets you slip away for a few minutes to yourself.

Located just by the revolutionary Bastille square and a stone's throw from the Marais, this spot is a popular choice due to the area's numerous restaurants, bars and nightlife. While this home sports a look that's slightly on the eclectic side, high ceilings and an intricate fireplace remind us of its Haussmanian origins and provide it with old world charm. With a twin bedroom that would suit siblings who don't mind sharing, it's an ideal option for a family of four looking for a base close to the lively Marais.

The open-plan living and dining space is the heart of the home, with two fireplaces for cosy evenings, and a sleek, fully-equipped kitchen – and your host can arrange a private chef. The lift doesn’t go to the top floor, so there will be some stairs to climb.

While The Guitar Tuner is unquestionably a home with a compact footprint, it manages to pack a punch with its fresh decor, light-filled living room and the amenities of a modern home. There's air conditioning throughout, a fully equipped kitchen and a bathroom with a sumptuous rainfall shower. Its location in the Bastille quarter is also another of its selling points as it's a hip part of town that is close to the centre and not yet overrun by tourists. A couple looking to stay in a more authentic part of town will find this home ticks all the boxes for a comfortable stay.

The Guitar Tuner

Located in the heart of Bastille, with its wonderful array of bars, cafes, and boutiques, this classical Haussmann-style apartment is well situated for exploring the delights of Paris. Paris is one of those walkable cities, but should you wish to hop on the metro, Ledru-Rollin is a few steps away. The interiors are exactly what you’d hope from a Parisian pad, with high ceilings and plenty of natural light. There’s a desk for remote workers and a large dining table for sharing morning pastries. Though this third-floor apartment sits higher up (there’s a lift here, don’t worry), you may still hear some street noise. 

Le Printemps

You'll find this home tucked down a quiet courtyard in buzzy Bastille. An array of cafes, bars, and restaurants are in the local area, so you'll be well-placed to discover the city's culinary scene. Even better is the metro station right down the street, though the famous July Column in Place de la Bastille is a short walk away. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed here, but we think the living space is relatively roomy. We're fans of the quirky design, too. Just note that it's on the second floor and there isn't a lift.

A five-minute stroll from Bastille's metro station, this split-level apartment makes exploring Paris a breeze. Prefer to keep it local? You'll find an array of restaurants, cafes, and boutique shops in the neighbourhood, too. The apartment itself is an absolute gem, filled with Parisian charm. As it's spread across two levels, the relaxing space is ample, and the kitchen is well-stocked to whip up home-cooked French feasts. Just note that it's on the third floor of a building without a lift, so a few flights of stairs are required. But, if you ask us, the effort is more than worth it.

This chic apartment is located in the heart of Le Marais, just a short walk from the iconic Place de la Bastille. Ideal for larger groups, just note that at full occupancy, two guests will sleep on the sofa bed in the third bedroom, and two on the sofa bed in the living room. Some bedrooms here are quite cosy, as is the private terrace – still, it’s a nice spot for sipping wine at the end of a busy day. You’ll also benefit from a private gym on the lower floor of this home, just off the third bedroom, so staying on top of your fitness routine is a breeze.

Plus, you’re just a twelve-minute walk from one of the oldest covered markets in Paris, Bastille Market, and seventeen minutes from the bustling neighbourhood of Le Marais.

Sure, as a party of five, two people will draw the short straw and sleep on a sofa bed, but as it’s in a separate bedroom, you’ll still enjoy privacy. Locally, you’re just a stone’s throw from the River Seine, so scenic tours of Paris are never far away.

Bright and cosy, this studio apartment is ideal for solo travellers. We love the bold pop of green and the artsy wallpaper. There's also a compact kitchen, though we think it's best for rustling up lighter bites. A few homely touches are lacking here, but it works well for quick trips and business travellers. Besides, you'll probably spend the majority of your time in Paris out and about. Bastille is home to restaurants aplenty, and the nearby metro makes exploring further afield a breeze.
