On the outskirts of Bidart, this home epitomises that with its clean lines and minimalist style. Using white walls, yellow sofas, and geometric light fittings, the apartment feels modern and new. Chill out on one of the Eames rocking chairs, soak up some rays on the deckchairs or watch what's cooking in the kitchen from the breakfast bar. A small balcony looks out over hills and other homes and is our favourite spot for assessing the conditions for the day's adventures. If surfing is on the cards, it's less than a 10-minute drive to Bidart beach, while Biarritz and its glamorous facade is just 15. Not in the mood for that much activity? We suggest padding down to the communal pool for lengths, before heading back to the terrace for a glass of something icy.

Travel south in France until you’ve nearly reached the border to Spain and that’s where you’ll find this little home located in the coastal commune of Anglet. With a reputation for Atlantic surfing beaches – there are eleven to be exact – this is where you want to retreat to for a properly beachy holiday. The home echoes its location with hues of white and blue, and a particular crispness that’s definitely helped along by yawning balcony doors and the breeze entering through it. 

The kitchen is great for prepping cheese platters, or a quick omelette, but we recommend venturing out to one of the cafes for a breakfast before hitting the beach. For a different kind of adventure, you might also find yourself on a hiking path, playing a round of golf, or kicking back as you wait for fish to bite when you’re out fishing. 

Although there is a casino and a number of night clubs for evening entertainment, we do recommend catching the sunset from the cosy balcony first. 

The Anglet Apartment

Situated in the curious seaside town of Biarritz, where upscale boutiques sit beside laidback surf shops, this breezy apartment is the perfect base from which to explore France’s southwestern coast. Inside the home, it’s relaxed and light-filled with glorious ocean views from the living space and bedroom. Begin slow mornings with brioche and espresso on your private balcony or potter about in the pale-painted living space, putting together a picnic in the kitchenette ahead of an afternoon at the beach. After frolicking in the shallows and basking in the sunshine, take the twenty-minute walk into the centre of town for glasses of full-bodied red in traditional bistros and tastes of artisanal produce in Halles Market – you mustn’t leave without trying a slice of indulgent gâteau basque.

We can imagine lazy starts followed by freshly-brewed coffee at the dining table, right next to the statement fireplace. Unfortunately not in working order anymore, the design of the old hearth is still a beautiful focal point to the dining space. Scramble eggs in the minimal kitchen to enjoy alongside fresh croissants, cheese, and caffeine before getting ready for a day of exploration. 

Venture to Cadran Solaire – only minutes away by car – where you can hike the trails and explore the native foliage. In Nérac, about fifteen minutes away, you’ll find the night market and open-air cinema, but it’s also a great place to grab a bite to eat during the day. 

On those days where you find your itinerary completely clear, you’ll delight in the peace on offer at this home. Open the curved doors of the living room and read on the sofa, or head outside where you can walk the grounds until you find the perfect spot for an impromptu picnic. Enjoy sunset drinks on the terrace, barbecued dinners, and collapse onto the lawn every now and again for late-night stargazing.

Made almost entirely of stone and wood, this natural cabin is tucked away in Arties, only a short drive from three different ski lifts. It's homely and cosy, especially with the working fireplace, but the living space might feel a little cramped at capacity. Luckily, a peaceful walk leads right into town, where you can stretch your legs. The twin rooms are ideal for kids who can more easily manoeuvre around the sloped ceilings, and there is a ski locker available for storing your gear after a day on the snow.

Arties is one of the most beautiful villages in the Aran Valley. There are several family run restaurants and bars within easy walking distance of the house. In the summertime there’s plenty of fun to be had in the surrounding area. Follow one of the hiking trails taking you through breathtaking mountain scenery, either on foot, by mountain bike, or on horseback. For a spot of culture, the magnificent eleventh century Santa Maria Church is a six-minute walk from the house.

In the winter months, the Baqueira/Beret ski resort is seven kilometres away. It’s widely acknowledged to be Spain’s best ski resort, with 167km of pistes. After hitting the slopes, head to one of the lively apres-ski spots in the area, or come home to Arties for tapas and wine, before taking a relaxing bubble bath and curling up by the fire.

We love the pale tones throughout and the wood elements that add to the homely feel, tempting you to cosy up around the fireplace in the wintertime, but ultimately, we imagine you'll spend a lot of time relaxing on the balcony with your cup of coffee and croissant for a lovely start to the day, admiring the views over the church of Santa Mara and Montarto in the background.

This picturesque alpine town is known for its broad and high-quality cuisine. In the winter, take a fifteen-minute drive to the Baqueira-Beret ski resort for a day of gliding down the snowy slopes, and in the summer, grab a bike and pedal through the lush hills and along the rivers. After all that activity, take a break for a bite to re-energize yourself before returning for another short stroll.
