Ramble the nearby historic streets before finding a sunny spot in the charming town square for a lazy lunch and some people-watching. When it’s time to change up the pace, head to the beach for sailing, diving, watersports, and swimming. Or squeeze in a round of golf at the famous Frégate golf course, with its breathtaking views over the island of Embiez. Whatever you choose to do, it seems impossible not to relax here.

When you stay at this apartment in La Ciotat, you’ll be just steps away from the Sunday market. It’s also under a five-minute stroll to the Old Port and fifteen minutes from La Ciotat’s beaches. The home itself has been renovated by an architect and includes a large living-dining room with a sofa bed, which guests five and six will be sleeping on. One thing to note is that there's air conditioning in the living space and the main bedroom only. There is also a children's bedroom with a bunk bed off the main bedroom, so this place is ideal for families.

Bandol is one of the most visited towns that lie along the Côte d'Azur, it's a fabulous spot where you can find some truly wonderful homes – case in point, this address is only a couple of streets over from the port. 

It feels remiss to start anywhere other than the wonderful palm-lined outdoor space, which, while modest in size, has both loungers for soaking up some rays and a Jacuzzi big enough to squeeze in seven. There's a contemporary sheen to the interior, from the Scandi-inspired furnishings and whitewashed walls to the modern kitchen dominated by clean lines and smooth surfaces. The bathrooms look as if they've been plucked out of a spa and we also love the hanging chair in the bedroom that is just the spot to get lost in a good book.

When it comes to filling up your itinerary, you're simply spoilt for choice. The golden sands of Plage du Grand Vala are a kilometre or so down the coastline and there's a great choice of restaurants around the port to head to come evening time. Once you've exhausted Bandol – which may take longer than you anticipated – Marseille is less than an hour away by car.

If we could give a home a pass based on location alone, this address would undoubtedly get one. Not only does it sit within the Verdon National Park and a five-minute drive from the truffle markets of Aups, but it has a prime view of the mountain peaks of Massif des Maures.

Thankfully, the villa has a lot more riding in its favour other than this wonderful position. For starters, it really spoils guests when it comes to outdoor space. As well as a pair of terraces from which to admire the scenery, there's a huge garden complete with a petanque court, playground and a fountain to enjoy. Best of all, there's a swimming pool that offers a refreshing spot in which to relax during baking hot afternoons.

Once a sheepfold in a former life, the home itself is imbued with rustic charm, filled as it is with wooden ceiling beams, terracotta tiles and handsome antique furnishings. The main bathroom was once an old pigeon house – not something you get to write all that often – but today it's the very vision of relaxation with its cast iron bathtub.

When you're in the mood to see more of this beautiful landscape, there are ample walking routes in the surrounding national park, as well as opportunities for everything from climbing, paragliding, canoeing, rafting and horseback riding. The shores of Lake of Sainte-Croix are only a short drive away if you fancy pootling about in a boat or splashing about in the invitingly blue waters.

This beautiful village house is the perfect place to enjoy a holiday in the Luberon region of Provence. The property is located on a hillside on the edge of Gordes, one of France's classified 'Plus Beaux Villages'. The Provençal valley views from the terraced grounds are incredible.

The house has been decorated with refined style and there's an authentic ambience across its elegant lounge, dining room and perfectly equipped kitchen with doors sliding open to the al-fresco dining terrace. Modern additions include air-conditioning throughout, a Sonos music system and Smart TVs in its mezzanine lounge and two of the three bedrooms.

Sleeping up to six guests, the bedrooms are gorgeous, one with a king-size double bed, wood-beamed ceiling and romantic rolltop bath, another with a queen-size double, sofa and en suite shower room and the third en suite with twin beds and lovely views through its little windows. 

Outside, the vistas of Provence will take your breath away whether you are enjoying a glass of Luberon AOC wine on the upper terrace or peacefully reading on the outdoor sofa beneath the poolside pergola. The swimming pool is superb for warm summer days when you don't wish to venture too far. We love the rustic charm of the terraced grounds with old stone steps, pretty pathways and swathes of summer colour.

We're not sure if BBC sent you here, but if you want a closer look at Mulberry House's kitchen, look no further than Rick Stein’s 'Secret France' featuring the smiley host making a delicious meal here — and were absolutely expect your to try to recreate it! This is a typical French hilltop chateau, but this doesn't mean it's ordinary. The casually welcoming atmosphere is a product of modern furniture and restored period features, the kitchen being the best example of this harmony. Still, we expect you to spend much more time around this home than in it. With the huge pool that's perfect for a morning splash and the futuristic loungers around it, a gorgeous dining spot under the pergola, and a breezy back garden, there are plenty of spots to socialise or reflect in peace. The host team that looks after this home is always available to help and organise those extra touches that will make your stay even more special. Think transport to football matches in Marseilles, babysitters, maid service, and more.

Provincial France is at its prettiest here with a little home with porcelain-white walls, countryside prints, and a wrought-iron bed embellished by a love heart. Part of a remote holiday resort, the home is surrounded by cobbled paths – follow one to find the communal pool that looks out over the dramatic mountain landscape, or go off-piste and hike a hidden trail through the forest. The medieval village of Gordes is less than three kilometres away – once you're done exploring the Game of Thrones-esque streets and artisanal shops, hike back to the patio for late afternoon drinks with the sound of rustling leaves as your soundtrack.

Inside, there’s a traditional French vibe, and the vistas from the main bedroom deserve a mention, too. Both bedrooms have air conditioning, which is handy for when the temperature rises. And when you feel like exploring, this villa is ideally placed. Port Grimaud is just a five-minute drive, while Saint-Tropez is also easily reached by car. Or let your host arrange a boat rental and explore the French Riviera’s turquoise waters.

Not that you’ve got any need to venture far from the villa.
