From this home, art exhibitions at The Bowes Museum are just a sixteen-minute walk, the town’s 12th-century castle is just five, and the incredible hiking spots of the Yorkshire Dales are a half-hour drive. With all this excitement to fill your days, you’ll love coming back to this gorgeous bolthole where you can take refuge on chilly, English evenings. Past the traditional stone exterior of this house, it’s quite a different story indoors. Modern, fresh, and funky, the living space is a surprisingly eclectic mix of velvet furniture, abstract art, patterned wallpaper, and pops of orange features. We love the rocking chair – the perfect perch for sipping Earl Grey after a day of hiking (or perhaps a nip of gin would help you warm up better). After dusk, head upstairs to the bedrooms to get cosy under crushed velvet throws and relax against the cushioned headboard, ready to do it all again tomorrow.

A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. The stylish, light-grey kitchen is understated and modern. But we love the traditional countryside features such as flagstone flooring and a sandstone, inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove. You feel like you've gone back in time when you’re stoking the flames with the cast-iron tools, and adding fresh logs from the wicker basket. And there’s plenty of history to discover outside the home too – take a thirty-five-minute walk to the 2000-year-old Chesters Roman Fort and Museum on Hadrian’s Wall.

Just a mile from the beautiful sandy and shingle shores of Marske Beach, this newly built holiday home is perfectly positioned to explore this picturesque stretch of the North Sea coast.

The majority of the individually decorated rooms include an eye-catching feature wall, adding a splash of colour and a playful atmosphere to the home, while the enclosed garden is perfect for outdoor dinners and playtime with four-legged friends and energetic children. 

You'll hear the occasional cheer from the terraces of the nearby football club. Still, its family-friendly atmosphere on match days makes it an ideal candidate for a first football match, with little worry about the outlay when your children inevitably grow bored around fifteen minutes in. 

After catching a snippet of the game, enjoy an afternoon stroll southwards along the dramatic coast towards the historic seaside spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea with its iconic cast iron pier stretching 208 metres out to sea and its Grade II-listed cliff lift.

At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. The River Swale is just ten minutes away from the cottage, and hikers can wander through the meadows, bright with wildflowers, in the surrounding area. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive to the Victorian spa town of Harrogate in just over an hour.

The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

From Fells

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

The Lake Gatehouse

Primed for a chic seaside getaway, this contemporary apartment is right in the heart of glorious Saltburn-by-the-Sea. As soon as you walk in, you'll notice how light and bright it is, with crisp white walls and high ceilings. Right in the heart of the town, you’ll have everything you need on your doorstep – pick up goodies for supper from the local deli, or enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants. This walker's paradise is situated on the Cleveland Way National Trail, a great route to explore the rugged North Yorkshire coastline. If a gentle wander is more your thing, roam the many paths winding through flower-filled meadows, or watch the sunset from the beach just eight minutes away.

We love every irresistible inch, from the light-filled skylights and gorgeous sea views down to the glossy parquet floor. The sumptuous master bedroom is so stylish, it's hard to believe it's all upcycled from cladding and roof joists, and the master bathroom is even better. Relax with a soak in the lavish free-standing bathtub or rinse off under the rainfall shower. The living area is warm and incredibly comfortable. In the mornings, open the bi-fold doors and sip your coffee on the Juliet balcony, watching the ocean waves from the floor-to-ceiling windows. After a tasty breakfast rustled up in the blue kitchen, head up to the roof terrace to soak up the sunshine. Decked out with lush greeny and a barbecue, you'll want to spend every minute you're not at the beach sitting up here, enjoying alfresco meals and sipping cocktails as the sun sets over the water. Speaking of the sea, it's just a five-minute walk down to the beach or into town, where you can snack on fish and chips and grab a pint at one of the local pubs. Shopaholics can browse Saltburn-by-the-Sea's independent boutiques, keen hikers can walk along the Cleveland Way or for a more leisurely pace, just stroll along the Victorian pier, relishing in the salty sea air.

Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.
