Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. It's easy to forget you're in North West England from this stunning home in Bowness-on-Windermere, as its modern mid-century interiors look straight out of '70s Hollywood. The grand living room is undoubtedly one of its main highlights as the pentagon-shaped window wall invites in floods of natural daylight and frames the backdrop of whimsical Lake Windermere in the distance. Here, you can kick back here in front of the fireplace, after fun-filled days of hiking, cycling or relaxing by the lake. When the weather is kind, take yourself outside on the balcony for some afternoon tea in the sunshine. 

While the Lake District presents a vast array of shops, pubs and restaurants to try out (the nearest pub is just 500 yards away), you won't find bars and clubs open until the early hours. That's why the entertainment features of this home have been carefully selected to ensure guests are having fun around the clock. From the basement spa and games room, you'll find not only a pool table but a private hot tub jacuzzi and an old school home cinema too.

With both spaces for relaxation and socialising, this home is sure to appeal to everyone in a large family or group of friends – there's even a secluded home study in case you'll need to work from home at all. Although with so much to see and do in and around Windermere, the best experiences had here are when work is left behind. Set off on walks amidst nature, knowing that there'll be plenty of lakeside cafes and restaurants en route for leisurely pit stops. And since the rest of the Lake District can be explored by car or by buses running regularly from Bowness Bay pier (just a ten-minute walk away), there's room to make your stay as active and adventurous as you please.

This luxurious home in the heart of Bowness-on-Windermere has wonderful lake views from the roof terrace. There’s an enclosed south-facing private garden to relax in complete with a dining terrace and hammock too. Inside, the stylish interiors will impress your family and friends, and all three bedrooms have en-suites. Another highlight is the location – it’s just 200 metres from the shores of Lake Windermere and a short walk from the village centre, where you'll find a variety of shops, restaurants, and pubs. It's also the perfect base for exploring the Lake District National Park, with its beautiful scenery and outdoor activities.

The Windermere Retreat

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

From Fells

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.

This comfortable and attractive home is perfect for a family seeking a special base for exploring the Lake District. It’s in the heart of Ambleside, close to shops, restaurants, and pubs, and within easy reach of Windermere. This area is a dream for hikers and when you return home, you can curl up in front of the log burner or soak your aching muscles in the bathtub. There’s even a workspace in the eaves bedroom, ideal for those working during their stay.

This Casterton cottage has lived many lives in its rich history, most notably as the school Charlotte Brontë and her sisters attended in the 1800s. To stay here is to stay in literary history. Recently renovated, the cottage has a new life as a home where high ceilings meets joyous splashes of colour and comfortable furnishings. All the home comforts are here, and the cottage is hugged by a charming little village. A five-minute drive away lies the historic market town of Kirkby Lonsdale, where you're sure to pick up charming souvenirs and fresh local produce. Further afield, take to the water at Lake Windermere, a half-hour drive from your front door. 

Brontë Schoolhouse

In a part of the UK with such stunning scenery, it really pays to have a home with some outdoor space here. Luckily, from this apartment's balcony, you get beautiful views of Lake Windermere and the hills surrounding the waters.

If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. The large kitchen and its collection of top-of-the-range appliances are particularly impressive, as are the pristine bathrooms.

When you're in the mood to see what the Lake District has to offer, you're in an excellent position to do so. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. The nearby town of Ambleside has a cinema, cafes and even a Roman fort to explore, too.

This warm and inviting home is in the grounds of the old vicarage estate, having originally been the stables. It’s nestled in the heart of the Lake District, between Lake Windermere and Esthwaite. The home boasts beautiful views down the valley towards Sawrey, Grizedale Forest, and the Old Man of Coniston. It’s just a short walk from Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s home, and is surrounded by a wild meadow planted with fruit and nut tree orchards – this is certainly a picturesque spot for a romantic escape. We love the freestanding bathtub and the wood-burning stove of this comfortable, cosy home-from-home.

Start your day in the garden with coffee and end it with a glass of locally-produced cider. There’s plenty of space for your group here – including a main living room and a snug – both with fireplaces so you can keep cosy during the colder season. Here to hike the trails? Why not walk along Devils Bridge, into the wooded gorge and admire the impressive views of the 300ft Mynach Waterfalls?

Casterton Gardens

Drystone walls snake across emerald-green fields and heather-clad hills dot the landscape of the Lake District. This old stone cottage is in the middle of it all, with walking trails across hills and fells leading right from the doorstep into the great outdoors. If you fancy heading for civilisation instead, Grasmere is a twenty-minute walk away with its selection of bars, restaurants and traditional country inns. After a day in your hiking boots, there’s nothing better than returning to the crackle of the wood-burning stove in this quaint little cottage, while admiring the timber-beamed ceiling above you. The kitchen is fully equipped to whip up any meal of the day, and there’s a bench outside for a sunny morning coffee. The real highlight here is the view. Stepping outside you’re surrounded by fields and fells, with nothing but the sound of sheep bleating in the distance and birds in the trees. Should the weather turn, you can enjoy this vista from the comfort of the living room, where a window seat makes for the ideal reading spot and underfloor heating keeps toes toasty warm.

Perched on the northern edge of Lake Windermere and cradled by the picturesque Loughrigg Fell, the delightful market town of Ambleside is a fine place to base yourself to uncover the best of the Lakes. And it's where you'll find this immaculate apartment, nestled along a quiet street.

Throw off your walking paraphernalia in the inviting entrance hall and make your way upstairs to discover a contemporary retreat awaiting. Exposed slate stone and lofty gables bring all the charm, while pops of colour and rich textiles add a dash of modernity. Come together in the cosy sitting room and break out the home's games. Or take pre-dinner drinks onto the sunny outdoor terrace – the views over the higgledy-piggledy rooftops are charming.

Friends or family coming together will love the extra privacy the two ensuite bathrooms bring, with power showers ready to kick start your day. 

And you won't have far to go when it's time to soak up Ambleside's gentle hustle and bustle. You're just moments away with its many bars, restaurants, and shops, including the beloved local landmark, Zeffirellis (one minute away), for its quality pizza and pasta.

The Dancing Beck

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

The Lake Gatehouse

There aren’t many places that really embrace the away-from-it-all feel of the deepest darkest Lake District, and this one is housed on an estate once owned by the son of William Wordsworth. Fields fringed by drystone walls and hillsides dotted with sheep are home to walking and cycling trails right from your doorstep. The River Rothay flows right past the garden where fairytale-esque stepping stones connect you to the other side of the bank. Following the riverside walk, you’ll end up in the pretty village of Ambleside in twenty minutes where shops and cafés abound and watersports on Lake Windermere are on offer. The home itself is an eco getaway, housed in a circular stone building designed to blend into the fells behind it. Make the most of countryside views from the terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows. The open living room, kitchen and dining room is flooded with light during the day and the high-spec kitchen is a cook’s dream. Plus, there’s underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove to keep things cosy warm. At sundown, there’s no better place than the furnished patio for a tipple or two as the sky streaks orange and pink. 

Viewpoint

This classic yet contemporary home is just a few minutes' walk from the centre of Ambleside and perfectly placed to capture a picturesque glimpse of the steeple of St Mary's Church rising above the trees. So sip your morning coffee on the balcony and take a minute to enjoy the charming view. Once you arrive and park the car, we love that there's little reason to move it again as you can find everything you need on your doorstep. However, if you do decide to explore further afield, the home is only a ten-minute drive from the head of Windermere, meaning that exploring the Lake District is as easy as hopping in the car with a picnic. And when you return from the day's adventures, stroll down to one of the country pubs for dinner and a restorative pint of ale, or simply flop down in that spacious living room. 

And Here Is The Steeple

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Garden of Edenhall

This charming home is a splendid base for exploring the Lake District National Park. It’s tucked away in a peaceful valley so you can really unwind, but it’s just a twelve-minute drive from Kendal and fifteen minutes from Windermere. When you’re not out enjoying the Great Outdoors, you’ll be able to admire views of the surrounding countryside from the patio, or get cosy beside the log burner. The vaulted ceilings make the home feel roomy and welcoming, whether you’re visiting for a romantic break or as a small family. 

Coachhouse Cosy

This charming home is in the Falls development in old Ambleside, just a five-minute walk from Ambleside yet in a remarkably peaceful setting. The home overlooks the Stockghyll Gorge, so the sound of water cascading down the rocks becomes the soundtrack to your stay – there are two terraces to enjoy this from, one of which has a barbecue. There are many delightful walks that you can set off on straight from the front door, so you won’t need to use your car much after your arrival. We love this home and think you will too.

Follow the woodland path from the cottage and discover a wood-burning hot tub beneath a canopy of leaves. We hear watching the sunset peek through the trees as the woodland bats begin to fly is magical. Then fire up the barbecue for an evening dining under the stars. During the day, head down to the crystal-clear waters of the River Esk and over the suspension bridge for brisk walks in the estate's grounds. Then head home to get toasty beside the log burner before a long soak in the rolltop bath found in the elegant bedroom upstairs.

Step inside, and you’ll find the decor is just as warm and homely – perfect for a winter evening snuggled up by the log burner. In addition to the open-plan dining and kitchen area, a lovely setting for a Sunday roast with the family, is the snug room. Part of the original farmhouse, the historic features and beams have been restored to create a charming setting. Slide your slippers off and tuck your feet under a blanket for a relaxing evening with a good book. 

When you’re ready to retire for the evening, take your pick of the traditional roll-top bath, deep modernised tub or walk-in shower to rinse away the day. Each bedroom, decorated with a striking individual design, will see you drift off to a peaceful night’s sleep.
