Before you've even set foot through the majestic fifteen-panelled entrance door, you know this isn't your average holiday home. Eyes immediately draw to the stunning sweeping oak staircase, with two panoramic windows revealing a wooded garden that beckons for you to relax in. Inside, this exquisite home comes with all the period trimmings – original feature alcoves, parquet wooden flooring, sash windows, panelled walls, and antique furnishings galore. Upstairs, discover two immaculately presented bedrooms where five-star hotel standard king-size beds await, while a double-ended slipper bath brings a touch of decadence to the bathrooms. Back downstairs, the well-equipped kitchen with stylish black AGA and Belfast sink makes preparing mealtimes a joy, and with two large reception rooms, there's space for you to all spill out here. When it's time to spread your wings, Staveley is a leisurely ten-minute stroll away, where you'll find a traditional pub, quirky cafes, a bakery, gelato bar, a microbrewery, bike hire, and so the list goes on. And of course, there's Lake Windermere – how could we forget.

Accents of racing green and antiqued brass bring flow and a dash of luxury throughout the space and guide you upstairs to an exquisite bedroom with a gleaming slipper bath at its heart. Part of an exclusive estate set within 1.5 acres of grounds, you could feel a million miles from anywhere here. But you're not as remote as you may think. The footpath from your door leads to the charming village of Talkin. Grab a shift pint and hearty meal in the village inn, or mosey down to The Boathouse Cafe for lunch al fresco overlooking the tarn. When it's time to embrace the great outdoors, hire a rowing boat, paddleboard, or kayak to launch off the tarn. Tee off from the local golf course - it overlooks the cottages. Then take a stroll around the 1.3-mile tarn through the mature woodland. Or, you could stay tucked up at home and soak up those views from the private patio or beside the fire – it's a scene you'll never tire of.

Perched on the Scottish borders, you’re perfectly placed for day trips to North Scotland, Cumbria’s Hadrian’s Wall, and the coast of Solway Firth – all just forty minutes’ drive away. Or you could just stay holed up at the cottage and country grounds, steeped in history. Be sure to ask your hosts about the fascinating past of the estate – once a no man’s land and a haven to criminals. The host’s family owns the estate these days, so you’re in safe hands here. Follow the woodland path from the cottage and discover a wood-burning hot tub beneath a canopy of leaves. We hear watching the sunset peek through the trees as the woodland bats begin to fly is magical. Then fire up the barbecue for an evening dining under the stars. During the day, head down to the crystal-clear waters of the River Esk and over the suspension bridge for brisk walks in the estate's grounds. Then head home to get toasty beside the log burner before a long soak in the rolltop bath found in the elegant bedroom upstairs.

It's easy to see why this stunning Georgian villa caught our eye – recently renovated, its chic interior exudes charm, garnering it plenty of attention and an appearance on national TV. We fell in love with the orangery, which is the perfect space for cooking (or having someone cook for you) and feasting. And each of the bedrooms has a unique design, adding lovely variety to your stay. The home is also an ideal base for hikers looking for an inviting homestead to return to after a ramble in the Lake District or North Pennines, while the local village houses an award-winning country pub.

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

It's easy to forget you're in North West England from this stunning home in Bowness-on-Windermere, as its modern mid-century interiors look straight out of '70s Hollywood. The grand living room is undoubtedly one of its main highlights as the pentagon-shaped window wall invites in floods of natural daylight and frames the backdrop of whimsical Lake Windermere in the distance. Here, you can kick back here in front of the fireplace, after fun-filled days of hiking, cycling or relaxing by the lake. When the weather is kind, take yourself outside on the balcony for some afternoon tea in the sunshine. 

While the Lake District presents a vast array of shops, pubs and restaurants to try out (the nearest pub is just 500 yards away), you won't find bars and clubs open until the early hours. That's why the entertainment features of this home have been carefully selected to ensure guests are having fun around the clock. From the basement spa and games room, you'll find not only a pool table but a private hot tub jacuzzi and an old school home cinema too.

With both spaces for relaxation and socialising, this home is sure to appeal to everyone in a large family or group of friends – there's even a secluded home study in case you'll need to work from home at all. Although with so much to see and do in and around Windermere, the best experiences had here are when work is left behind. Set off on walks amidst nature, knowing that there'll be plenty of lakeside cafes and restaurants en route for leisurely pit stops. And since the rest of the Lake District can be explored by car or by buses running regularly from Bowness Bay pier (just a ten-minute walk away), there's room to make your stay as active and adventurous as you please.

This charming home is in the Falls development in old Ambleside, just a five-minute walk from Ambleside yet in a remarkably peaceful setting. The home overlooks the Stockghyll Gorge, so the sound of water cascading down the rocks becomes the soundtrack to your stay – there are two terraces to enjoy this from, one of which has a barbecue. There are many delightful walks that you can set off on straight from the front door, so you won’t need to use your car much after your arrival. We love this home and think you will too.

In a part of the UK with such stunning scenery, it really pays to have a home with some outdoor space here. Luckily, from this apartment's balcony, you get beautiful views of Lake Windermere and the hills surrounding the waters.

If it's ever too cold to use this space, you can head back inside and sit by the bay window, from which you get a similarly swoon-worthy panorama. Once you can tear your eyes away, you'll probably notice that the interior looks pretty modern — that's because it underwent a complete refurbishment in late 2021. The large kitchen and its collection of top-of-the-range appliances are particularly impressive, as are the pristine bathrooms.

When you're in the mood to see what the Lake District has to offer, you're in an excellent position to do so. Stock Ghyll Force waterfall is half an hour's walk away, while Rydal Cave can be reached in under ten minutes' drive. The nearby town of Ambleside has a cinema, cafes and even a Roman fort to explore, too.

Once the dwelling of the estate's groundskeeper, this Lake District property has been refurbished to become a contemporary countryside getaway.

Inside, the design could definitely be described as minimalist, with walls painted in soothing whites adorned only by a few well-chosen pieces of artwork, a sleek kitchen and a preference for simple wooden furnishings. The wood-burning fireplace situated in an archway between the living room and dining area is sure to keep the whole ground floor warm and toasty.

But what about during those balmy months in which a roaring fire isn't necessary? The alfresco dining table on the terrace is sure to see some use during this time, as is the barbecue. You'll probably want to work up an appetite first, however, and there's an onsite heated swimming pool and an activity centre offering everything from watersports, 4x4 off-road driving, clay pigeon shooting, archery, axe-throwing or bushcraft.

If you're after something a little more sedate, there are plenty of walking routes that start from the site, including one to the cute village of Hawkshead about ninety minutes away on foot.

There’s a private south-facing garden and a roof terrace for relaxing in the sun, while inside, the designer high-quality furnishings create a luxurious retreat. We love the living space with its wood-burning stove, and the kitchen is equipped with state-of-the-art appliances, while all three bedrooms have en-suites. The location is a delight too – this home is a mere 200 metres from the shores of Lake Windermere. Guests can enjoy picturesque hikes, boat trips on the lake, and visits to local attractions such as the World of Beatrix Potter.

Lakeview Luxury

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.
