This beautiful country home is steeped in history – the colonial-style building is Grade II listed, and it is said that former Prime Minister William Gladstone once stayed here when visiting Braunton. 

The bay window looks out onto the historic parish church, and there is an excellent village pub right next door for when you’re in need of some refreshment or a tasty pub lunch. The cosy sitting room has a wood-burning stove and comes with a complimentary basket of logs, and there’s an additional snug with a sofa and TV – just pop on one of the many DVDs available in the library and settle in for a movie night. You’ll also have the bright and modern kitchen at your disposal – why not rustle up a quick, delicious supper, which you can then enjoy in the spacious dining area.  

A picturesque stretch of the Tarka Trail is close by, offering paths for walking and cycling, while a short car ride will take you to an array of lovely beaches, including Saunton and Croyde. You can indulge in water sports such as surfing and canoeing here, and the house has storage space for boards. Those hoping for a more low-key, restful trip can simply enjoy the golden sands and the soothing sound of waves – and don’t forget to taste the legendary Devon cream tea!

When you can tear your eyes away from the view, you’ll be glad of the comfortable furnishings and thoughtful touches. You’re also just above a delicatessen and tearoom, so you needn’t travel far for a Devonshire cream tea.  

In the morning you might like to walk four minutes into the centre of Appledore, past the brightly coloured fishermen’s cottages, to visit the art galleries and craft shops. Pop into a cafe for coffee before strolling to the quay to watch the fishing boats and yachts in the distance. After lunch at the deli downstairs, hop on the small passenger ferry that whips you across the bay to Instow. There you’ll find a beautiful sandy beach – and hopefully an ice cream. Surfers will be pleased to be a nine-minute drive from the Blue Flag beach of Westward Ho!

However you spend your time, returning to the bright but cosy apartment will feel liking coming home. Sip wine in a bubble bath while someone else nips out for fish and chips, then sink onto one of the huge sofas for a night watching the stars.

Set on a private estate made up of seven holiday cottages and a mere ten-minute drive from some of North Devon’s most picturesque sandy bays, it’s got family holiday written all over it. Splash about in the heated indoor pool. Let little ones burn off steam in the impressive play area (or indoor soft play and games room should the weather turn). To be honest, we knew we’d like this north Devon home when we heard about the country pub just two minutes' walk away but when we got here: wow! This is an immaculate and spotless cottage, newly renovated and decorated to provide everything guests need for a friends or family escape. We were particularly impressed with the number of living spaces – a family room, conservatory and study (for those working from home) as well as a living room and kitchen/diner.
