This beautiful, eco-friendly home can trace its history all the way back to the year 976, when King Edward gifted the estate to a loyal member of his court. Since then, it has evolved into the country's second-best party and wedding venue (according to The Times), but in our opinion, it really comes into its own when booked as a relaxing rural retreat. Sitting on the edge of Dartmoor, it packs in plenty of rustic charm, making it the perfect place to enjoy a well-deserved break with family and friends. The interior pits modern art, bright throws and eye-catching rugs against original details like oak beams and more farmhouse features, including the Everhot range cooker and wood-burning stove, to create a stylish and welcoming home. Step into the immaculate garden, and the first thing that will catch your eye is the inviting pool with breathtaking views over the surrounding national park – it's seasonally heated to a balmy 28°C, so you can enjoy a dip whatever the weather. In addition to the pool, there's also a tennis court where you can unleash your competitive side. Your host Alistair, who co-owns the farm with his brother, will be there to cater to all your needs. As a former superyacht captain, he's an expert in delivering five-star luxury service.

One glance at this thatched arts and crafts style cottage and you'll feel like you've stumbled into a fairytale. But instead of a faraway kingdom, you'll find this cosy homestead nestled in a quiet corner at the edge of Dartmoor National Park. It's the perfect place to escape to the country – one glance at those striking views over the Teign Valley from the private garden and you'll never want to return to the bustle of city life (we sure didn't). Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

If you're craving a little more adrenaline, then Dartmoor National Park is on your doorstep, where you can hike, cycle or pony trek through the dramatic landscapes. But if your favourite kind of adventure is the culinary kind, then there are plenty of traditional pubs and restaurants to try in this wonderful corner of Devon.

There's a fantastic selection of eateries by the harbour front as well as a cosy pub that serves delicious local produce. This exquisitely renovated bakehouse provides a sweet escape amidst the glorious rolling hills and wooded valleys of East Devon. It sits in the lovely village of Musbury, within walking distance of the local shop and pub and just a twelve-minute drive from Lyme Regis and its spectacular Jurassic coastline. 

The interior strikes the perfect balance between contemporary comfort and authentic charm. Look closely, and you'll spot ample inklings of this home's storied past, from the beam-clad ceilings to the Juliet balcony, where flour bags were once hauled from the loft below. On the first floor, the open-plan living area is blessed by heaps of natural light, offering a free-flowing canvas of calm with lofty vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors and partially exposed stone walls. In the heart of a quaint little village in Somerset, this 16th century thatched cottage seamlessly blends rustic charm with modern comforts and restored interiors. Stone floors, whitewashed walls and thick oak doors house the open plan living area, complete with a high-spec kitchen with an electric Aga, a cosy sitting room where you can curl up on the armchair with a book off the shelf, and a wooden dining table with ornate chairs. The back door leads out into a picture-perfect courtyard, enclosed by stone walls. The air is scented by the lavender bush and the climbing roses, and on sunny days, gather at the outdoor table for a languid lunch. 

The cottage is a short walk from two lovely country pubs serving locally sourced food and Somerset cider. After a hearty lunch, head down one of the many public footpaths nearby, taking you through rolling green meadows and pastures. There is a village shop where you can buy provisions for dinner, or head two miles into the town of Ilminster, where you’ll find a variety of local shops and a supermarket. After a day of exploring, the sanctuary of the cosy bedrooms will call, with their serene green walls palette and wooden floors. You’ll easily fall into the swing of peaceful village life here, and leave feeling rested and rejuvenated.

Fancy a romantic getaway with a twist? This upside-down home places a firelit living area above the bedroom, where the en-suite bathtub enjoys a framed view of the creek. Upstairs, we think the waterside terrace might inspire a paddle to Salcombe – made easy by the three-seater kayak your host provides. It's worth noting that there is a bit of a hike to the front door here (thirty-six steps, to be precise), so this home won't be the best option for everyone.

Set among twenty-five acres of grounds in the Devon countryside, this Victorian manor house is a real showstopper in which charming period features rub shoulders quite happily with modern amenities.

Among the manicured garden, you'll find a saltwater swimming pool that's heated by solar panels, a tennis court surrounded by Rhodendrum bushes and corners with orchards and vegetable patches — not to mention a Grade II-listed grotto. If rain cancels play at any point, you can always head into the barn that's been converted into a dance-studio-come-yoga-space. In here, there's also a well-equipped gym, an infra-red sauna and a games room to keep you busy.

That's before we've even got to the home itself. It's hard not to be instantly wowed by the grand dining room, double-aspect living rooms and hallway complete with a baby grand piano. Upstairs, there are bedrooms to suit every design taste, from four-poster beds straight out of a period drama to more contemporary options.

Although there's plenty to keep you occupied without leaving the address, the excellent location gives you heaps more options. There are a pair of pubs and a restaurant in the surrounding village of Chumleigh, while both Westward Ho! and Saunton Sands beaches take fifty minutes to reach in the car. There are walking routes galore in the surrounding Devon countryside, too.

Perched on the seafront in Lyme Regis, this second-floor apartment offers postcard-worthy panoramas that won't disappoint. Sit back, relax, and watch the tide roll in from the leather armchairs – thanks to the large windows, the scenery is always front and centre. Even better is the small balcony, the perfect spot for a glass of wine as the sun goes down. The apartment is a great size for two, though a third guest could be accommodated on a sofa bed with prior notice. And the location? You can't beat it. A steep passageway leads directly to the beach, putting the saltwater and single shore right on your doorstep.

More a way of life than a holiday home, this unique stay offers a wealth of outdoor activities and add-on experiences. Aimed at families who like to get out into the fresh air, it's a fabulous country house in an idyllic rural setting. Right on the River Avon, it's the perfect spot for wild swimming with a rope swing and river plunge pool in the garden. Set in its own pretty grounds, the rustic farmhouse can trace its roots back to the 12th century and has plenty of character. Stone floors, oak beams and fireplaces are topped off with comfy furnishings and a lived-in, home from home feel. We love the living room with its exposed stone wall and cosy sofas around the fire. Bedrooms are all of a good size and even the bathrooms are stylish. Ideal for a large family group, you can cook meals in the country kitchen and serve them at the huge dining table, or barbecue outside on the Argentinian grill on warmer evenings. If the lure of the water has called you here, you can spend days playing in the river, or hop into the twelve-man hot tub. Head off for walks nearby or just let the kids bounce on the trampoline while you sit back with a cold beer on the sun loungers. Other add-ons include sea fishing with the host and taking time out in the log-fired sauna in the grounds. And it's just a short drive to Kingsbridge and the coast if you fancy a change of scene.

River Dipping

If you love the thought of drifting to sleep while gazing up at the stars, this dreamy cabin could be the holiday home for you. The cabin is tucked away in a lush garden in a romantic setting that will make you instantly forget any of the worries of day-to-day life. It’s a studio-style cabin with one wall entirely made of glass, blending the interior and exterior. A skylight above the bed means you’ll go to sleep each night staring straight up at the stars. 

The cabin is based just outside of Launceston in Cornwall, close to the border of Devon. It’s brilliantly located for outdoorsy adventures, whether you’re keen on surfing or prefer to explore the countryside on foot. Dartmoor National Park is twenty-seven minutes away by car, with its wealth of wonderful hikes and cycling trails. You might take a day-trip to St Isaac to paddle in the sea and eat fish and chips and ice cream at the shore – it takes forty-three minutes to drive there, and it’s well worth the trip. 

After a day of exploring Cornwall and its gems, you can look forward to sipping wine on the terrace. Perhaps you’ll cook dinner on the barbecue before enjoying a relaxing bubble bath in the beautiful copper tub. Or to take the romance to the next level, you might soak in the hot tub under the stars. It’s impossible to leave here feeling stressed out.

As it’s all about the great outdoors, you might not immediately think of this as a holistic, spa-like retreat destination. But this home can change your mind.

Set within twenty-two acres of thick, private woodland which links through to Hembury Woods, this traditional farmhouse looks every bit the postcard you’d expect – a grey slate roof, cute chimney, and dry stone wall framing the front. Spend days exploring the great outdoors with a walk to the Holne Moor, a dip in the Holy Brook, or splash about in one of the River Dart's best swimming holes after a good walk. When you're ready for a bite, set down your picnic blanket and have a light feast atop one of the pasture's hills. Just an eight-minute drive from the nearest town of Buckfast, park the car, kick off your wellies and step into this woodland haven. 

Tuck into your welcome basket of local artisan goodies, then take some time to choose a treatment in this wellbeing haven – how about acupuncture, meditation, or Shiatsu massage? Or if you fancy yourself as a herbalist, your host can take you wild foraging. After collecting delicate herbs and mushrooms, rustle up dinner on the range cooker below timber beams in the country kitchen. Light up the wood-burning stove and read the kids a bedtime story before heading up to soak the night away in your copper bathtub, a tumbler of whisky in hand.

A Soul's Retreat

Set in a row of Georgian houses on Sidmouth’s endless esplanade, there’s no better place to soak up the seaside than from this pretty apartment. Enormous sash windows reveal a balcony, ideally set up with a dining table for elevenses in the golden sunshine. Pour a glass of your favourite tipple to the sound of waves lapping the shore and caws of seagulls swooping overhead. Later on, when you’re ready for your lunch, fire up the barbecue on the terrace and prepare the catch of the day in the impressive kitchen. You’ll notice the interiors are tastefully decorated, with classic furnishings and quality linens to ensure unbridled comfort. After relaxing with a cup of tea on the plump sofas, put on your sun hat and mosey down to Sidmouth Town Beach. Roll up your trousers, pick your way across the pebbles and paddle in the brisk waters. If you’d like to expend a little more energy, embark on an eight-mile clifftop walk along the Jurassic Coast to the pretty village of Beer – country pubs with real ale and slap-up grub await.

As night falls, cosy up beside the firepit (which handily doubles as your barbeque for alfresco meals) for an evening of stargazing and marshmallow roasting – on a clear evening, you might even catch a shooting star. In chiller months, take things inside and pull up a pew at the granite-clad bar area as you rustle up a meal in the made-for-action kitchen. The wine fridge will keep your tipple perfectly chilled, while the underfloor heating will keep your toes toasty. Cosy up in front of the TV and while away an evening with a relaxing movie night. Should you ever wish to leave this charming nook for two, you’ll find the historic town of Tavistock is just a five-minute drive away, where you’ll find bustling shops, restaurants, and an award-winning gastro-pub complete with a sunny beer garden. Or up the ante and take off into the beautiful wilds of Dartmoor National Park and the Tamar Valley (both less than half an hour's drive away) – you’re perfectly placed equidistance from them both.

Spread out over three floors and glowing from top-to-toe in crisp white, this family retreat is a joy to return home to. Vintage memorabilia posters and zesty pops of colour perk the space up a treat, while period features and antique pieces bring all the character and charm.

Over in the first of two living rooms, butter-soft sofas placed beside the fire are more than inviting. As is the Gatsby-esque 1920's mini bar in the grown-up feel sitting room next door – playfully known as the Cocktail Room by the owners. And the shaker-style kitchen makes cooking and entertaining a joy – especially with it's handy opening out to the sitting room so that you can keep an eye on the rest of your troops.

When it's time for some coastal adventures, take a stroll down the hill towards Dartmouth's historic maritime centre (five-minute walk – a little longer when you're coming back up!), stopping at its smart shops, galleries, and boutique bistros along the way. Or for a dose of traditional seaside nostalgia, grab your nets and buckets for crabbing on the embankment before fish and chips down at the harbour's quayside – the views of the bobbing boats are delightful. And when the beach finally calls, hop in the car and you'll be on the glorious sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands in five minutes flat.

Just a short stroll from the centre of Salcombe, this apartment is a refreshing coastal escape. The rooms are bright and breezy, the balcony has beautiful views across the estuary and we love the sweet extras like the Sonos sound system, Netflix and The White Company toiletries. Families should note that child-friendly amenities aren’t available here and that little ones will need to be supervised in the communal garden. Still, it’s a fantastic location with easy access to East Portlemouth's beaches, as well as hiking trails through the surrounding countryside – not to mention private parking for adventures further afield.

If the gentle trickle of water helps you relax and you're a lover of the great outdoors, this fabulous home is sure to delight you. Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Plus a friendly local host who'll be on hand with tips and recommendations about the area.

On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop. 

Run with the River

Nestled in a typical Devon valley with house martins nesting under the eaves, cattle grazing in the distance and minimal phone reception, you could be forgiven for thinking you've stepped back in time. From the moment you walk in the door, you'll immediately feel the stresses and strains of everyday life melt away. The home has been sympathetically converted to retain its evident charm, with the addition of luxurious modern comforts (including wi-fi – so you won't be completely disconnected from the world). The spacious kitchen is equipped with an AGA for the ultimate in countryside chic, though there's also an induction hob as a backup, plus antique chairs and a beautiful walnut dining table. Through to the new section of the house and you're treated to double-height ceilings and plenty of natural light, in addition to a couple of bedrooms. The upstairs bedroom enjoys views overlooking the orchard and terraced lawns from the open mezzanine beside it. Outside in the garden, you'll find a contemplative space abuzz with insect life throughout the spring and summer, thanks to an abundance of wildflowers. There are plenty of walks from the house, many along secluded footpaths traversing unspoiled valleys – there's a chance you might not meet another soul. If you can tear yourself away, you'll find plenty of pubs and hotels serving fantastic seasonal produce and locally brewed beers. Alternatively, drop by Alder Vineyard – a ten-minute drive away – for a journey far beyond the bottle.

Overlooking an arm of the Salcombe-Kingsbridge Estuary, this home not only has a stunning waterfront view in its arsenal, but the rolling countryside packs a pretty impressive punch, too. For that very valid reason, we recommend spending as much time as possible out on the decked terrace – whether that’s in the hot tub or simply enjoying a cup of coffee in one of the outdoor chairs is completely up to you, as long as you’re keeping an eye on the horizon. 

Popular with paddle boarders, you might even spot a few going by when you’re taking in the water views. If you’re eager to try it out for yourself, there’s a rental place a five-minute walk away and they’ll see that you’re joining the fray in no time. Prefer to admire the water from afar? Also completely fine, and you might find yourself frequenting the famous Crabshell Inn. With its waterfront position, you’re able to appreciate the surroundings while you sip a pint, and it’s only a five-minute stroll away from home. 

Explore the market town of Kingsbridge, drive to Salcombe and visit as much of South Devon as you can manage in between all of the relaxation you’ll be doing in this home. Kindle a fire in the wood-burning stove and sit back with a glass of wine as you watch the world go by through the floor to ceiling windows.

Sitting in the sprawling grounds of a family-owned manor house, this cute cottage is the Somerset countryside idyll. Wisteria creeps up the beautiful hamstone facade and the Grade II listed features have been carefully retained. Stepping inside the cottage, it’s surprisingly modern with a long, Scandi-chic dining table for ten at the centre of the open living space (there's dining for sixteen in the conservatory). Comfy blue sofas sit in front of the old hearth, now home to a wood-burning stove, and the kitchen is blissfully modern yet retains a country-style charm. Tuck yourself away in the family snug, set around the big TV for a movie night. Or, head outside and make the most of the fabulous grounds. The cottage itself has a private space with a wood-fired hot tub overlooking the fields and a big outdoor dining table for sunny evening barbecues. The surrounding landscape provides miles of stunning countryside to explore either by foot or bike, and local produce and wholesome meals can be found in pubs and grocery stores in the nearby town.
