When you're ready to see even more of this corner of England, walk 150 yards to Challaborough Bay, the sandy horseshoe shaped cove, perfect for a bracing swim or some surfing lessons. The South West Coast Path is a two-minute walk away and if followed for just over an hour and a half, will take you through gorgeous coastal scenery to Wonwell Beach. The famous seaside town of Salcombe can be reached in thirty minutes by car, where you will find excellent fish restaurants, the iconic Cranch’s sweet shop, and local ice cream shops serving honeycomb ice cream, a Salcombe classic. 

When you arrive home, settle in on the cosy sofas for a movie night, or fire up the bluetooth speaker and enjoy drinks on the terrace as the sun sets over the horizon.

There’s an open-plan living space that’s ideal for socialising – keep glasses topped up as conversation flows in the seating area while your group’s appointed chef cooks up a storm in the sleek kitchen. On sunny days, take your meals out on the terrace or head up to the roof deck and dine with views of the water. Once you’re refuelled and raring to go, grab your beach essentials and take the quick trip to Challaborough’s pebbled shore. Amble along the South West Coast Path for twenty-five minutes to the stunning Ayrmer Cove to find beasties in rock pools and hidden sandy spots. Return home to rinse salty wetsuits in the outdoor shower, then bundle into the snug for a movie marathon and hot cups of cocoa.

Kitted out in whites and blues, rattan, faux fur throws, and macrame, this beach house in West Buckland will not only make for a very stylish stay, but just so happens to also be the perfect base of operations for any watersports enthusiasts. Bantham beach – a twenty-minute walk away, seven minutes by car if you’re eager to get there – is famous for being a surfing beach, so if you’ve always wanted to try, or maybe you've mastered the surfboard already, this will likely be your first port of call. If that’s not quite in your wheelhouse, there’s always paddleboarding, and if you feel safer on solid ground, simply walk the dunes or spend the day sunbathing instead. Look out for the famous Gastrobus where you can find breakfast, pizzas and snacks. Days can also be spent walking the coastal path to South Milton, exploring the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or golfing at the local course.

Make it back home in time to watch the sunset from the comfort of the garden furniture outside and stay out there for a while before heading back in to get dinner ready – that is, of course, if you haven’t already dined out. Find a spot at the dining table, and after you’ve eaten, clear the table to get a board game set up for some friendly competition. As it gets chillier, light the wood-burning stove before settling in for a bit of late-night television and a chill glass of wine.

This apartment caught our eye with its impressive sea views and private terrace. It’s also in the perfect spot for refreshing walks along the coastal path, as well as providing easy access to the heart of Hope Cove. Free private parking is available here and two well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you during your stay. Inside, the rooms are family-friendly with bunk beds in the second bedroom and children's amenities available on request. Plus, your host can help organise a range of sweet extras – including paddle board hire.

Embrace coastal living at its finest in this first-floor apartment. Nestled on the waterfront path to Hope Cove, you'll be a short walk from the village's eateries, pubs, and beaches. But it's the sensational views here that really caught our eye. We adore the sea-facing balcony, where you can perch with a glass of wine and watch the tide roll in. Inside, the living area is bathed in sunlight and offers plenty of space for a small family – including two pups – to stretch out. The building also has handy storage for all your outdoor gear, be it kayaks or wetsuits.

This barn makes an excellent option for a rustic retreat in the heart of the South Devon countryside. Located in the coastal village of Marlborough, this home makes it easier than ever to relax. Out in the palm-filled garden, you can sit back in the hot tub before getting out and taking a perch next to the fire. Alternatively, the alfresco lounge on the terrace isn't a bad spot for a languorous evening over a bottle of wine.

Heading through the glass doors, you'll see the interior is just as geared towards laid-back living. Not only in the decor — heavy as it is with faux fur, house plants and neutral colours — but also in the numerous sumptuous spots where you can kick back. During the colder evenings, you can get cosy on the sofa with the log-burner crackling in the background or lie back in the freestanding bathtub. During brighter days, the dining table in the conservatory complete with an upright piano is sure to see some action.

As you can probably guess from the nautical view from many of the windows, the seaside isn't too far away. South Sands Beach is only seven minutes away in the car, for instance. That's just one of many beauty spots in the surrounding South Devon AONB and once you've worked up a hunger from seeing all the locale has to offer, simply drive over to Salcombe in six minutes and hit up one of the seafront gastropubs.

Fancy long lie-ins and courtyard tipples in the countryside? This former stone barn is nestled in one of Devon's charming villages and may be the answer to an adults-only escape. It's the perfect place to disconnect – though if you are up for an adventure, your host is on hand to help with everything from Champagne cruises to paddleboard hire, and the golden South Milton Sands are just a five-minute drive away.

This 250-year-old thatched cottage will charm you from the get-go. It's tucked down a winding lane surrounded by rolling countryside, sandwiched between Hope Cove and Salcombe. There's no doubt the location is impressive, but we reckon the home is even better. The garden is the epitome of outdoor living, with a bubbling hot tub, a summerhouse, and a panoramic terrace. You can toast marshmallows around the fire pit, or when the weather turns, head inside to the drawing room and get cosy in front of the fire. The cherry on top is the shepherd's hut, where a lucky couple can unwind in total privacy. No wonder English Home Magazine deemed it a 'must-stay' on the Devon coast.

A fifteen-minute drive sees you at the Southwest Coast Path to discover secluded bays and white cliffs, or make the twenty-minute drive to Bantham Beach for a day on the soft sand of the classic British seaside.

For that very valid reason, we recommend spending as much time as possible out on the decked terrace – whether that’s in the hot tub or simply enjoying a cup of coffee in one of the outdoor chairs is completely up to you, as long as you’re keeping an eye on the horizon. 

Popular with paddle boarders, you might even spot a few going by when you’re taking in the water views. If you’re eager to try it out for yourself, there’s a rental place a five-minute walk away and they’ll see that you’re joining the fray in no time. Prefer to admire the water from afar? Also completely fine, and you might find yourself frequenting the famous Crabshell Inn. With its waterfront position, you’re able to appreciate the surroundings while you sip a pint, and it’s only a five-minute stroll away from home. 

Explore the market town of Kingsbridge, drive to Salcombe and visit as much of South Devon as you can manage in between all of the relaxation you’ll be doing in this home. Kindle a fire in the wood-burning stove and sit back with a glass of wine as you watch the world go by through the floor to ceiling windows.

The charming balcony is a real treat, and while it's not the biggest outdoor space, you'll have plenty of room to unwind with a glass of wine in the evening as you look out to sea views. Inside, the modern decor is another welcomed sight, and the apartment is well-equipped with everything you’d expect for a relaxing stay. And with the sandy beaches, seafood restaurants, and cheery pubs just a short walk away, there’s plenty of fun to be had for friends and families when you do venture out.

More a way of life than a holiday home, this unique stay offers a wealth of outdoor activities and add-on experiences. Aimed at families who like to get out into the fresh air, it's a fabulous country house in an idyllic rural setting. Right on the River Avon, it's the perfect spot for wild swimming with a rope swing and river plunge pool in the garden. Set in its own pretty grounds, the rustic farmhouse can trace its roots back to the 12th century and has plenty of character. Stone floors, oak beams and fireplaces are topped off with comfy furnishings and a lived-in, home from home feel. We love the living room with its exposed stone wall and cosy sofas around the fire. Bedrooms are all of a good size and even the bathrooms are stylish. Ideal for a large family group, you can cook meals in the country kitchen and serve them at the huge dining table, or barbecue outside on the Argentinian grill on warmer evenings. If the lure of the water has called you here, you can spend days playing in the river, or hop into the twelve-man hot tub. Head off for walks nearby or just let the kids bounce on the trampoline while you sit back with a cold beer on the sun loungers. Other add-ons include sea fishing with the host and taking time out in the log-fired sauna in the grounds. And it's just a short drive to Kingsbridge and the coast if you fancy a change of scene.

Seeking a quaint escape on the coast? This thatched-roof cottage has charming interiors and log burners that will warm you up after a countryside jaunt. Though tall guests will have to take care not to bump their heads on low ceilings, especially in the kitchen, we think the landscape views, outdoor hot tub, and fire pit are well worth the compromise. Hope Cove awaits down the road with its waterside eateries and a tiny harbour, perfect for quiet beach days.

Located in Kingsbridge, this delightful Victorian home offers a wonderfully comfortable base from which to explore the market town’s sights, as well as the delights of the South Devon AONB. 

Styled with a modern touch yet retaining much of its historic charm, you’ll find a welcoming open-plan living area decorated with nautical prints and boasting ample natural light. We’re particularly fond of the wood-burning fire here that invites cosy evenings enjoying the warmth of its glow over a glass of wine. 

Upstairs, meanwhile, you’ll find a pair of comfortable bedrooms beckoning a restful night’s sleep, while outside, the private leafy garden is the ideal spot to enjoy alfresco breakfasts and celebratory sundowners when you’re not out sampling the local pubs. 

Speaking of exploring, you’ve got a wealth of things to see and do nearby, including the Kingsbridge Cookworthy Museum (a three-minute walk), Hope Cove (a seventeen-minute drive), as well as the South West Coast Path.

Set just off Salcombe's bustling high street, you couldn't dream up a more central location for this stylish home. Not that you'd know it sat on the oh-so-private terrace of this palatial property. Offering practicality and style in equal measure, the orangery dining room is a delight – and that designer kitchen with twin dishwashers and wine fridges makes entertaining a breeze. With flexible arrangements for each bedroom, which are spaced apart over three floors, this home perfectly suits big groups looking to holiday together without crowding each other.

Just a short stroll from the centre of Salcombe, this apartment is a refreshing coastal escape. The rooms are bright and breezy, the balcony has beautiful views across the estuary and we love the sweet extras like the Sonos sound system, Netflix and The White Company toiletries. Families should note that child-friendly amenities aren’t available here and that little ones will need to be supervised in the communal garden. Still, it’s a fantastic location with easy access to East Portlemouth's beaches, as well as hiking trails through the surrounding countryside – not to mention private parking for adventures further afield.

Outside, the manicured lawns lead down to a private quay and shingle beach – perfect for paddling or crab fishing at low tide. Fancy a change of scene? Central Kingsbridge, with an established restaurant scene, is just a ten-minute walk away.  

The Ambassador's Retreat

Fancy a romantic getaway with a twist? This upside-down home places a firelit living area above the bedroom, where the en-suite bathtub enjoys a framed view of the creek. Upstairs, we think the waterside terrace might inspire a paddle to Salcombe – made easy by the three-seater kayak your host provides. It's worth noting that there is a bit of a hike to the front door here (thirty-six steps, to be precise), so this home won't be the best option for everyone.

Situated in a private gated development, this penthouse apartment is all about the views. Easily accessible courtesy of the lift from the covered parking area, head on up to the third floor and you’ll find an open-plan, light-filled space waiting to welcome you home. The sea vistas are best enjoyed from the balcony over a glass of wine, but you’re spoilt with scenery from most parts of this home – fling open the bi-fold doors and take it all in. Better still, Salcombe's centre is just a short stroll away, so you'll never be too far from shops, eateries and the water.

It's worth noting this elegant cottage only has a small private courtyard leading off the kitchen. What we love the most, though, is the garden. The vast lawn is perfect for little ones or dogs to tear around on, and a selection of seating areas offer options to dine alfresco and soak up the scenery. For a day at the beach, meander down the lane next to the house and onto the footpath, and you’ll find yourself on South Sands Beach.
