Rejuvenate with sea views and fresh country air at this Grade II listed farmhouse nestled on the outskirts of postcard-pretty Berrynarbor and just a seven-minute drive from the coast.

Having served the surrounding Devon farmland for hundreds of years, this traditional stone and slate barn has experienced quite a transformation in recent times, with a spectacular mezzanine bringing all the wow factor.

In winter months, snuggle up by the wood-burning stove (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty too) or get together around the dining table. It’s an atmospheric place to spend many an evening with the lofty wooden beams overhead. 

When the sun shines, head out into the pretty garden to soak up those sea vistas from the raised terrace as you fire up the barbecue. There’s heaps of space for kids to run amuck on the lawns leading down to a babbling stream. And be sure to seek out the hammock squirreled away in the trees – it’s got your name all over it.

When it’s time to get up and at ’em, nip into Berrynarbor with its characterful pubs and inns (just an eight-minute drive) and Ilfracombe with its beautiful fishing harbour (a ten-minute drive). Or ditch the car and pick up the coastal bridle path leading down to Hele with its tiny cove – it’s as idyllic as it sounds.

Style-wise, this home is equal parts classy and edgy; velvet upholstery and faux-fur throws contrast with neon signs and curious light fixtures in the bedrooms. The pièce de résistance is the gravity-defying fireplace in the living area, nothing short of a showstopper. You'll want to explore every room in depth to make sure you haven't missed anything. This is a level of design you might not necessarily expect from a sleepy part of coastal Devon – but that's part of the home's beauty. It's the perfect retreat for those seeking total tranquility in exceptional surroundings.

Tucked out of the way on a quiet road in the North Devon village of West Down, this charming terraced cottage has everything you need for a couples retreat or small family getaway in the countryside. Gain entry via the porch on a pedestrian walkway before opening up the stable door to the open-plan kitchen/dining/living room featuring a log burner, comfy sofa and space under the central staircase for a dog bed – setting everything up perfectly for a cosy evening. On the other side of the stairs are your dining space and small but perfectly formed kitchen. Head upstairs, and behind the solid oak door, you'll uncover a lovely bedroom with exposed beams and soothing neutral decor. Across the hallway is a modern bathroom with a 3/4-size compact bath and an additional bedroom that's set up for children. The cottage is well located for guests to access the two-mile stretch of golden sand at Woolacombe that runs down to Putsborough, around a fifteen-minute drive away. The beach backs onto a small town with everything surfers and beach lovers could need to stock up on before taking to the surf.

Set above Grunta Beach and positioned in the hilly dune-like valley behind Morte Point, this coastal abode makes the most of its location. Here, sea vistas are framed by large windows, whilst a large outdoor terrace provides an impressive viewpoint – this home prioritises your coastal vantage point for a memorable getaway.

Inside, the large open living space is homey and modern, creating a comforting place for you to unwind after a day walking the South West Coastal Path. Sink into the plump sofas with your holiday read in front of the crackling fire, gather around the family-style dining table to enjoy home-cooked dinners, and settle on the terrace with a glass of locally-produced wine and watch the tide roll in.

Speaking of the tide, spend a day on the sands of Grunta Beach, or visit Woolacombe, where you can try your hand at surfing and paddleboarding. There are endless hiking trails in the area too, so pull on your walking boots and set about this AONB’s abundant surroundings.

After a day spent on the beach, you can take a soak in the bathtub before settling down for an evening in the garden. Perhaps you’ll tuck into fish and chips while watching the windsurfers dance in front of the sunset.

Just up the road from one of Britain’s most beautiful beaches, this elevated bungalow directly overlooks Woolacombe’s world-famous sea view. For a relaxed day in, you can still make the most of the sunny outdoors in the luscious sloped garden. And when the weather turns, a heated conservatory it's a perfect setting to make some good progress on your holiday read.

This charming home is part of a lighthouse site, having been renovated from a former lighthouse keeper’s cottage. It’s just outside of the pretty village of Mortehoe in North Devon, where you’ll find pubs and restaurants. Woolacombe and its Blue Flag sandy beach is also just a ten-minute drive away. The cottage is in an ideal spot for bird watching, and there are plenty of walks to enjoy nearby. The house itself is cosy and comfortable, with everything you might need for a short stay by the sea.

One glance at those panoramic views and it's love at first sight. Perched just above Woolacombe Beach, if you're anything like us, you'll spend nearly every moment here on the expansive deck, watching the tide rise and fall – except when you're sunbathing on the sand or surfing the waves, of course. Wake up to the ocean vistas each morning, then following an alfresco breakfast, stroll down to the beach for an afternoon picnic and a dip in the water. End the evening with a barbecue and a glass of wine, watching as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon. Sounds heavenly, doesn't it?

You can even make the most of the scenery inside, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that drench the entire home in natural light. Contemporary and cool, we love how the coastal colour scheme reflects the backdrop – and all the mod-cons are accounted for. The rainfall showers in the en-suite bathrooms are hotel-worthy, a high-spec kitchen stocked with culinary gear (including a wine chiller) is a dream to cook in and Netflix, Now TV, books and board games will keep you entertained on rainy days. 

Location-wise, you can follow the South West Coastal Path into Woolacombe for eateries and pubs (about a fifteen-minute walk), or head in the opposite direction and check out the views from Morte Point (twenty-five minutes away). There's also some great golfing at Saunton if you fancy a day on the fairway, while many of North Devon's gems are within driving distance.

With sea views from every angle, this hillside home is the perfect base for beach babies. Bookended by Woolacombe and Mortehoe, you'll be within walking distance from some of Devon's best stretches of sand. Surfers will want to try the waves at Woolacombe beach below, while more sheltered bathing can be found in the coves of Combesgate and Barricane beaches. 

In the evenings, sit out on the patio and watch the sun set over the sea with a glass of something nice. On chillier nights, curl up by the wood-burning stove in the cosy lounge as the wind picks up outside. The modern kitchen has all the facilities needed for rustling up a feast, though it's hard to resist the fish and chip shop found a ten-minute walk away. For more formal meals – or for a few cocktails in town – Woolacombe has several restaurants and bars, or the larger town of Barnstaple is a twenty-minute drive away. The South West Coast Path runs past the house so join it to walk through magnificent rock formations and striking cliffs above. Our recommendation? Lundy Island – famous for its puffins – can be seen from the house and makes for a great day trip, with ferries leaving from Ilfracombe and Bideford.

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.  

Old Farmhouse

Look out over the fine golden sands and peeling surf of Woolacombe Bay from this boutique three-bedroom apartment. Just 150m from an award-winning beach, one of the finest in the South West, there are few better places for a family holiday that ticks all the boxes. Surfers, sunbathers and sand castle builders flock here over the warmer months (with committed surfers remaining in the depths of winter) and it's easy to see why.

The apartment is split across two levels, with a beach-inspired barefoot luxury interior that opens out onto two glass-fronted furnished balconies, one on each level. Wake up each morning, brew yourself a coffee and check the surf from the comfort of your apartment. Sure, you could check the internet, but it's not the same. With its inviting open layout, the kitchen/dining room/living area encourages you to spend time together as a group.

You're also ideally located for easy access to the bars, restaurants and surf shops that line Woolacombe's centre. After an early morning surf and a day spent enjoying all the on-site facilities at your disposal – including a gym, heated pool and sauna – why not head into town for a seafood dinner and to catch an open mic night at a local bar? While there are options to suit all tastes, enthusiastically tucking into an authentic Sri Lankan curry at nearby Barricane Beach is a sunset experience that's hard to top.

There's little reason to venture far for sun, sea and surf unless you're sheltering from south-westerlies at  Putsborough or seeking out the occasionally heavy beach break at Croyde. However, keen golfers might like to test their mettle on the challenging links course at Saunton Golf Club, while landscape lovers should take the opportunity to explore the wilds of Exmoor's western edge, both within a half-hour drive.

South By Southwest

Summers spent at the seaside live long in the memory of families, and this home will be another one to add to the memory bank. Live out your own childhood nostalgia of building sandcastles on sandy shores and sunny walks along the coastline. Being situated between the popular Devon destinations of Woolacoombe and Ilfracombe, you'll be in a prime location to take full advantage of a seaside holiday here. Spend ten minutes wandering the local coast path to Grunta Beach where the turquoise water gleams like blue crystals in the sun, or make the six minute-drive to Woolacombe for a classic English day out at the beach on a huge stretch of sand with sea waves to jump over.

If you're feeling adventurous, walk along the three-mile stretch of sand and pick up the coastal path to Baggy Point – a dramatic headland with wonderful views of Woolacombe and Croyde beaches. Perched in the ancient pine trees, high above the beautiful coastline and surrounding village of Mortehoe below, this stately home stands out amongst the rest. From the moment you step foot over the threshold, you'll notice the high ceilings, original features and stripped wooden floors that make for a real sense of space throughout the home. After an afternoon spent wandering the North Devon and Exmoor countryside, unwind in the light and airy living space with friends and family. You'll find an ornate fireplace, crushed velvet furnishings and statement lighting that creates a really sleek and elegant area to relax. Moving into the chic kitchen and dining area, we think there's somewhat of a Scandi feel to the space, with white Eames-style chairs, low-hanging lampshades and a minimalist design. Upstairs, the cosy master bedroom offers distant sea views out of the dual aspect windows, a copper effect metal bed frame and a velvet ottoman for extra storage. But the real highlight of the home is the outside space. We can think of nothing better than balmy summer evenings spent out in the peaceful and private garden area. Set on a private estate made up of seven holiday cottages and a mere ten-minute drive from some of North Devon’s most picturesque sandy bays, it’s got family holiday written all over it. Splash about in the heated indoor pool. Let little ones burn off steam in the impressive play area (or indoor soft play and games room should the weather turn). Meet the estate’s farm animals (over fifty and counting) at feeding time. Grab yourself some ‘me time’ with an onsite yoga or aqua aerobics class. Or head off on an adventure with furry friends through the gardens, sunken lanes, meadows, and streams (perfect for little dam-builders) – there are sixteen acres to explore here.

When thoughts turn to food, pick your own at the estate’s kitchen garden and greenhouse then rustle up a bite to eat at home. Or grab something from the onsite honesty shop, stocked with frozen meals, BBQ packs from the local farm shop, and lashings of ice cream. Then all that’s left to do is put your feet up and hunker down at home. The brainchild of a celebrated interior designer, this North Devon townhouse has got it all figured out. Located a couple of minutes’ drive from Croyde beach, where you’ll spend long days surfing and soaking up the salty sea breeze, the inside of the home is beautifully sophisticated, with subtle nautical nods—we loved the knot wallpaper and delicate fish shoal light shade. The bunks in the children’s room will be a hit with mini swashbucklers, while the pizza oven on the patio should keep big kids quiet for a while. You’ll find the pretty village of Croyde a five-minute amble down the road, offering a charming selection of tea rooms, ice cream parlours and thatched pubs. After a hearty roast dinner, retreat home to the outdoor hot tub before turning in for the night in those luxurious king-size beds.

An escape to Devon is always a good idea. Staying in this beautiful home elevates it to an excellent one. The home comprises a grand Georgian house and the original farmhouse from the 16th century. They’re joined together by a secret internal door disguised as a bookcase – it’s like an Agatha Christie novel. 

This gorgeous home can be found in north Devon, tucked away amid rolling countryside. It’s just a twenty-two-minute drive from Ilfracombe beach, so paddling, surfing, and strolling along the sand can all easily be added to the day’s agenda. One of three homes on the same site, it’s the ideal base for exploring the spectacular Devonshire coast. Saunton Sands is one of Devon’s most beautiful beaches, with three miles of golden sand, and azure water. It’s as popular with surfers as families, but with such a vast stretch of beach, rarely feels crowded. The popular village of Braunton is also close by, with its many surf shops, restaurants and cafes. Enjoy a lazy lie in before heading to the beach to swim, surf and explore Braunton Burrows’ immense sand dunes. Then come back for a relaxing dunk in the hot tub and watch the sun go down on the deck with a glass of something delicious. The host welcomes pets (and Saunton Sands is dog-friendly year-round), so if you’ve got a furry friend, it’s the dream holiday.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, Croyde has some fantastic cafes, pubs and restaurants where you can refuel and possibly sample a famous Devon cream tea. Back at home, you’ll find a wet room where you can rinse off the salt and sand, as well as a grand clawfoot bath for the perfect ending to a delightful day.
