Laid out over two floors, there’s plenty of space for relaxed socialising as well as room to enjoy quiet moments alone while feasting on splendid natural vistas. 
Upstairs, the living room invites you to kick back on its sofa or armchairs with a glass of wine while enjoying the fresh breeze coming off of Waterhead Creek through the open glass doors. We love the flairs of modernity and fun at this Victorian townhouse, placed just a ten-minute stroll from Dartmouth's harbour edge.

Spread out over three floors and glowing from top-to-toe in crisp white, this family retreat is a joy to return home to. Vintage memorabilia posters and zesty pops of colour perk the space up a treat, while period features and antique pieces bring all the character and charm.

Over in the first of two living rooms, butter-soft sofas placed beside the fire are more than inviting. As is the Gatsby-esque 1920's mini bar in the grown-up feel sitting room next door – playfully known as the Cocktail Room by the owners. And the shaker-style kitchen makes cooking and entertaining a joy – especially with it's handy opening out to the sitting room so that you can keep an eye on the rest of your troops.

Who could fail to fall in love with this unique home close to the centre of Dartmouth? Everything about it is charming and quirky, with its narrow 17th Century frontage having earned it the nickname 'the skinny house' locally. Set on one of Dartmouth's hillside roads, it also happens to have uninterrupted views over the town, the river and all the way to the sea.

With three main floors, guests enter through an ancient door surrounded by exquisite carvings dating back to 1629, when the town was known for its shipbuilding. Originally the entrance and annexe to Mount Galpine House, owned by the notable Holdsworth family, it's recently been modernised and converted into a delightful home away from home. Packed with character, there's also a contemporary feel, with a glossy galley kitchen and comfy modern furniture – there's not a hint of chintz in sight.

As you would expect, the rooms are narrow, so a living room on the first floor is home to a long, squashy sofa and all eyes are drawn to the window with its stunning view. But there are a few surprises in store too – like the tiny kitchen courtyard, designed to give light and ventilation, and the mezzanine bathroom tucked into the rafters of the vaulted master bedroom. 

But nothing can prepare you for this home's biggest surprise. Newly opened to guests, its beautiful 'secret garden' is located down steep steps on the other side of the narrow road. Built into walls once used as a Second World War gun placement and artillery store, it looks out over the town to defend the river. Along with plenty of natural planting and a courtyard that feels almost magical, there's a wonderful slate-roofed conservatory built against the living wall of rock and moss. Tended by a gardener, it's a hidden gem of outdoor space, with a barbecue for summer evenings.

We were sold on the views of the River Dart alone, and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the inside of this architectural stunner. It's a little dated (although we think it's cosy), but the fantastic location more than makes up for the interiors.

Sitting on the opposite side of the River Dart from the town of Dartmouth, the village of Kingswear offers some sweeping views of the local area and the vantage points to be found at this home are up there with the best of them.

During bursts of warm weather, you're sure to spend hours upon hours out on the glass-walled terrace complete with an alfresco dining table. However, if the forecast isn't so forgiving, the panorama can still be admired through the floor-to-ceiling windows that line the walls, or even through the home's telescope if you want a close-up.

There's more to this home than what lies outside, however. The mass of glass brings in a wealth of natural light to the interior and this is accentuated by the reflective wooden floor and cream walls. Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. Plus a friendly local host who'll be on hand with tips and recommendations about the area.

On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop.

Situated on the South Devon coast, just a mile from Blackpool Sands and close to the picturesque town of Dartmouth, this countryside cabin is the perfect place to get away from it all. Spend your days hiking along footpaths through the stunning landscapes, pack picnics for days down at the beach and play games of tennis out on the private court – your hosts will even provide the rackets and balls.

The standout space is the open-plan upper floor with its bespoke kitchen, sociable dining area and inviting living space – it's an ideal spot to spend time together as a family. Huge sliding doors lead onto a furnished balcony with stunning views to accompany your morning coffee or evening sundowner session. The town tumbles down the hillside towards the horseshoe-shaped bay, where you'll find a variety of wonderful brunch spots and restaurants – many of them serving the catch of the day – within a ten-minute walk. Local standouts include The Curious Kitchen, Rockfish and Albero. You're within a fifteen-minute drive from some of Torbay's finest beaches. However, our personal choice would be to escape the crowds and walk twenty minutes to the secluded shingle beach at Fishcombe Cove – it's a local favourite for a reason.

We think this cute home on the south Devon coastline has the rustic cosiness of a beach hut, but with all the modern finesse demanded by today's holidaymakers. Inside, original wood flooring and the brick fireplace housing a wood-burner are particularly handsome features, but the real star of the show is the view of Brixham Harbour from the large windows in both the living room and bedrooms — pack your binoculars and you can watch fishing boats coming in and out of the bay. Around the other side of the home, there's a stone-walled back garden complete with a patio, alfresco seating area and a barbecue. We can totally understand if you're not in the mood to cook at any point and the nearby town of Brixham — only ten minutes or so away on foot — has plenty of seafood restaurants, as well as fish and chips shops and cosy pubs. In the other direction, Fishcombe Cove and Battery Gardens can be reached in the same amount of time, too.
