You'll feel at one with the Devon countryside as soon as you step out of the backdoor onto the patio. Marvel at panoramic views of lush green hills rolling in the distance. All cosied up on a quiet country lane just a short amble from the quaint village centre, this wonderful little cottage welcomes all to sample British country life in all its glory. 

With its wonderful white–washed facade, aged windows and brown front door with shrubs to either side, from the outside, this home is a picture–perfect haven steeped in rural charm. A backdrop of sprawling, perfectly–manicured lawns and verdant trees make the setting all the more picturesque, meanwhile the lovely little garden area serves up the ideal spot to privately soak up the sparkling Devonshire rays.

The outside of this home is enough to tug on our heartstrings, but as we meander our way from room to room, we can't help but become more enamoured with the place. Cute and cosy with a winning mixture of classic and contemporary touches, we love the fact that in spite of some of its more modern updates, the home has retained all of its classic charm. The natural wooden doors instantly add to that warm, welcoming appeal, meanwhile the addition of skylight windows invite the sunlight to stream its way inside.

Each and every nook and cranny tells its own unique story, but if you ask us, the real heart of this home is the living area. With a traditional log burner at its centre and leather sofa just waiting to be sunk into, we can already see ourselves curling up here as dusk settles with a large glass of red and some rich chocolate truffles – heaven!

The living space feels homely and inviting from the offset. Creams and beiges are reminiscent of the sands on the shore, while chunky timber beams and supports bring a rustic warmth to the lounge. Take a moment to relax with a good book in the cosy living space and when it’s time to explore, slip on your sandals and take the seventeen-minute walk to Ness Cove Beach, accessed via the intriguingly-named Smugglers Tunnel. If you’d like to explore a little further afield, jump in the car and drive for six minutes to Teignmouth – stroll along the promenade or try your hand at kayaking, coasteering or paddle boarding. When the day draws to a close, reflect on your adventures with a gin and tonic in the London Inn, no more than a five-minute saunter from your doorstep.

Spend long summer days between the beach and the cottage where the generous backyard can accommodate impromptu games of football, a spur of the moment picnic, and, of course a good soak in the hot tub. Be sure to bring the fizz along, so you can truly sit back and unwind in the peace and quiet as you gaze out over the horizon. Bring nibbles out to enjoy with wine as you take advantage of the sunny garden from your seat on the L-shaped garden sofa. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a native hedgehog.

When you’re not eating at home, settled around the gorgeous farmhouse table, you can head out to the Crab Shack or any of the other surrounding eateries. Explore a hidden gem, Shaldon Beach, by hopping on a ferry from Teignmouth Back Beach, and watch a live band at Ship Inn on Queen Street.

After sundrenched days return home to curl up in front of the wood-burning stove with a glass of wine in hand. The Old Walls Vineyard, located just around the corner from this home, is worth a visit if you’re after a good vintage. Puzzle together or watch a movie and when you’re ready to retire, do yourself a favour and make one more stop outside – finish a cup of chamomile tea under the stars – you might hear some of the local owls hooting – and then take to the comfortable bed to recharge for the next day.

You’ll find soft textures and a log-burning fire in the living space, characterful bedrooms with superbly comfortable beds, a well-equipped kitchen for those itching to try out some new recipes, and our favourite part – the games room. Play on the Xbox, work on a puzzle or challenge your loved ones to a table skittles tournament. When the sun’s out, spill onto the patio for sizzling barbecues and ice-cold drinks, or relax in the hot tub as the evening rolls in. Slap on your sun cream and take the five-minute walk to Holcombe Beach for a quiet afternoon by the sea. And when you’re in the mood for a little more adventure, Teignmouth with its Victorian pier, crazy golf and quaint boat trips to Shaldon Beach is a five-minute drive away.

Although the classic sitcom Fawlty Towers gave the impression that accommodation in Torquay left much to be desired, this majestic townhouse completely dispels that notion. 

Having been renovated in 2022, the design brings together boldly patterned wallpaper, a smattering of antique furnishings, some well-chosen pieces of artwork and tufted furnishings to create an interior that feels traditional but far from stale. The bright blue tiling in the bathroom is rather fetching, too

It must be said that the standout features are found in the garden, which is filled with flowers during the warmer months. As well as offering plenty of seating out on the terrace, there's also a hot tub in which you can pass summer evenings.

If the weather gods are smiling down upon you during your stay, the shingle beach at Anstey's Cove can be reached in under fifteen minutes, while Babbacombe Beach takes ten minutes more than that. The Kent Cavern caves are only eight minutes away on foot, too.

Boasting sea views out towards Shaldon and across the Teign estuary, this apartment is an ideal base for a coastal retreat. Situated next to the West Coast railway, you’ll hear some train noise throughout the day – that said, the balcony’s a great spot for watching the steam trains that pass through during spring and summer. There’s an on-site fitness room for those keen to keep up with their exercise routine, but for us, this home’s all about the location. With Back beach less than five minutes away on foot and Teignmouth's vibrant bars and eateries within easy reach, you’re well-placed to enjoy all that this stretch of Devon has to offer.

Upon the English Riviera, staying in the warm climate of the sophisticated town of Torquay feels like the equivalent of Cannes. Hop off a yacht at Torquay Marina and take an eighteen-minute stroll to this fabulous apartment, fit for any VIP. Upon arrival, your host will have a bottle of wine waiting for you. Before you even start exploring this modern flat, pour yourself a glass and say cheers to the start of the holiday. Do you like a home with a view? Because this one offers several. From its many large windows, you can spot the bay, beaches, harbours, the marina, and of course the big blue sea itself. On a sunny day, we recommend taking a bowl of olives and a chilled prosecco out to the private balcony – pop up the parasol if it gets too hot. Indoors, pristine white and cream interiors make the space feel fresh, with a mint-green sofa which you can sink into after a long day of beachside activities. South Devon might feel distinctly Mediterranean, but you’ll certainly enjoy ending the day with a refreshing cup of Earl Grey.

Tucked away in the countryside yet just ten minutes from Maidencombe beach, this home offers up the best of both worlds. With three bedrooms, one of which is perfect for children with its bunk bed setup, this home is ideal for families – and your four-legged friend can join in on the fun, too. The wi-fi can be patchy here because of the rural location, but with a hot tub to occupy your time and the coast on your doorstep, surfing the web is likely to be the last thing on your mind.

It’s all about the seafront location here – just moments from the sands of Torquay Beach this minimal apartment provides an ocean view from your private balcony. There’s a simple but well-equipped kitchen here, though with a promenade and seafood restaurants at your fingertips, you can make the most of the waterfront dining. Keep in mind there are some stairs to climb here, and the second bedroom lacks some natural light, but it’s perfectly comfortable for a coastal stay.

Breezy Bay Retreat

Two buildings make up this family-sized home on the outskirts of Torquay. It’s a fifteen-minute walk from the town centre for all the seafood and sailing you can handle. Large families or groups of friends can spread out between two living rooms, two indoor kitchens and a basement chill-out room complete with arcade games, beanbags and a huge flatscreen TV. We love the long dining table in the conservatory, crowned with twisting vines. But it’s the outdoor space that drew us in, with a hot tub on the covered terrace, curtained lounge area and a full outdoor kitchen protected from the elements.

Named after the beautiful blue waters that this apartment overlooks, this coastal getaway couldn’t be better placed to explore all of Torquay’s scenery and attractions. Take in the sweeping view of the sea and boat-lined harbour from the light-filled living area. 

For a leisurely approach, you can also watch the sea wake up from the master bedroom. When you've awoken from your slumber, we suggest enjoying alfresco meals overlooking the bay on the terrace. 

If you can drag yourself away for some activity, you’re perfectly located for venturing further afield. Whether it’s to the award-winning restaurants on the doorstep or the vast selection of outdoor activities, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy. 

You’ll also have access to the residence’s communal gardens, along with easy access to Rock Walk in the Royal Terrace Gardens. Back at home, the relaxing interior, with a calming nautical tone, offers the ideal spot for a bit of downtime with the family.

Sitting just a short walk from Torquay Beach, this apartment boasts a stellar location. Though the interiors are fairly simple and it might feel a little cramped with four guests, it’s perfectly practical for a coastal stay. After a day strolling along the promenade or soaking up the sun on the beach, you’ll enjoy unwinding in the cosy living room with a glass of wine – though keep in mind the sofa bed will accommodate your third and fourth guests. From here, you’ll be able to enjoy the Torquay Seafront, seafood restaurants and watersports on offer, while boat trips can be taken from Torquay Harbour.

Here, the seagulls will organise your morning wake-up call, so treat yourself to a cup of tea and an extra thirty minutes in bed. After a hearty breakfast whipped up in your own kitchenette, it’s time to explore the English Riviera. Inside, the place is fresh and funky – we loved the pastel pink furnishings and bold accent walls. After a restful sleep in the comfortable beds, rustle up a full English in the sleek kitchen or pick up some freshly baked pastries from the coffee shop opposite your building. Soak up the warm sunshine on the terrace before slipping on your sandals and strolling along the South West Coast Path. 

When lunchtime rolls around, head into the heart of Torquay, around a ten-minute walk away, to sample the independent eateries. If you fancy swapping the seaside for the country, Dartmoor National Park is less than an hour’s drive from your building.

It’s in a beautiful spot in a secluded cul-de-sac overlooking the Aller valley, within easy reach of the beaches of Torquay and Babbacombe. Bring your bucket and spade, as you’re within easy reach of several beaches. We love paddling at Paignton, which is a twelve-minute drive, and exploring the harbour in Torquay, which is sixteen minutes away. 

If you prefer to keep your feet dry, there’s still plenty to enjoy here. The South West Coastal Path is a dream for hikers and cyclists, and you have all of Dartmoor’s delights to discover too. 

When you’re not exploring, you’ll be relaxing at the cottage. Curl up on the sofa beneath wooden beams for a cosy afternoon in, or spill out onto the courtyard for games in the fresh air. Head out to a pub for dinner, pick up fish and chips, or cook in the well-equipped kitchen. Everything you might need is close to hand at this comfortable and convenient home-from-home.
