This 250-year-old thatched cottage will charm you from the get-go. It's tucked down a winding lane surrounded by rolling countryside, sandwiched between Hope Cove and Salcombe. There's no doubt the location is impressive, but we reckon the home is even better. The garden is the epitome of outdoor living, with a bubbling hot tub, a summerhouse, and a panoramic terrace. You can toast marshmallows around the fire pit, or when the weather turns, head inside to the drawing room and get cosy in front of the fire. The cherry on top is the shepherd's hut, where a lucky couple can unwind in total privacy. No wonder English Home Magazine deemed it a 'must-stay' on the Devon coast.

Seeking a quaint escape on the coast? This thatched-roof cottage has charming interiors and log burners that will warm you up after a countryside jaunt. Though tall guests will have to take care not to bump their heads on low ceilings, especially in the kitchen, we think the landscape views, outdoor hot tub, and fire pit are well worth the compromise. Located in the coastal village of Marlborough, this home makes it easier than ever to relax. Out in the palm-filled garden, you can sit back in the hot tub before getting out and taking a perch next to the fire. Alternatively, the alfresco lounge on the terrace isn't a bad spot for a languorous evening over a bottle of wine.

Heading through the glass doors, you'll see the interior is just as geared towards laid-back living. Not only in the decor — heavy as it is with faux fur, house plants and neutral colours — but also in the numerous sumptuous spots where you can kick back. During the colder evenings, you can get cosy on the sofa with the log-burner crackling in the background or lie back in the freestanding bathtub. During brighter days, the dining table in the conservatory complete with an upright piano is sure to see some action.

As you can probably guess from the nautical view from many of the windows, the seaside isn't too far away. South Sands Beach is only seven minutes away in the car, for instance. That's just one of many beauty spots in the surrounding South Devon AONB and once you've worked up a hunger from seeing all the locale has to offer, simply drive over to Salcombe in six minutes and hit up one of the seafront gastropubs.

For that very valid reason, we recommend spending as much time as possible out on the decked terrace – whether that’s in the hot tub or simply enjoying a cup of coffee in one of the outdoor chairs is completely up to you, as long as you’re keeping an eye on the horizon. 

Popular with paddle boarders, you might even spot a few going by when you’re taking in the water views. If you’re eager to try it out for yourself, there’s a rental place a five-minute walk away and they’ll see that you’re joining the fray in no time. Prefer to admire the water from afar? Also completely fine, and you might find yourself frequenting the famous Crabshell Inn. With its waterfront position, you’re able to appreciate the surroundings while you sip a pint, and it’s only a five-minute stroll away from home. 

Explore the market town of Kingsbridge, drive to Salcombe and visit as much of South Devon as you can manage in between all of the relaxation you’ll be doing in this home. A dreamy South Devon stay awaits at this sprawling homestead. You can directly access the South West Coastal Path from the garden, which takes you to the area's best beaches in just fifteen minutes. Thurlestone's pubs and eateries are also within easy reach, or you can barbecue in the fresh air back home. We love the cosy, coastal-inspired interiors – two sitting rooms (one with a log burner), a country-style kitchen, and four equally charming bedrooms ensure plenty of space for everyone. The cherry on top is the option to add a hot tub for an additional fee – a soak under the stars is the perfect way to end the day.

Situated in a private gated development, this penthouse apartment is all about the views. Easily accessible courtesy of the lift from the covered parking area, head on up to the third floor and you’ll find an open-plan, light-filled space waiting to welcome you home. The sea vistas are best enjoyed from the balcony over a glass of wine, but you’re spoilt with scenery from most parts of this home – fling open the bi-fold doors and take it all in. Better still, Salcombe's centre is just a short stroll away, so you'll never be too far from shops, eateries and the water.

Embrace coastal living at its finest in this first-floor apartment. Nestled on the waterfront path to Hope Cove, you'll be a short walk from the village's eateries, pubs, and beaches. But it's the sensational views here that really caught our eye. We adore the sea-facing balcony, where you can perch with a glass of wine and watch the tide roll in. Inside, the living area is bathed in sunlight and offers plenty of space for a small family – including two pups – to stretch out. The building also has handy storage for all your outdoor gear, be it kayaks or wetsuits.

Scenes From the Cove

Fancy a romantic getaway with a twist? This upside-down home places a firelit living area above the bedroom, where the en-suite bathtub enjoys a framed view of the creek. Upstairs, we think the waterside terrace might inspire a paddle to Salcombe – made easy by the three-seater kayak your host provides. It's worth noting that there is a bit of a hike to the front door here (thirty-six steps, to be precise), so this home won't be the best option for everyone.

Nestled along Hope Cove, this home is an ideal choice for a coastal family getaway. The charming balcony is a real treat, and while it's not the biggest outdoor space, you'll have plenty of room to unwind with a glass of wine in the evening as you look out to sea views. Inside, this place is the epitome of good taste – and we'd expect nothing less from arguably the prettiest village on the South Devon coast. The interior designer host has effortlessly nailed coastal chic, fusing muted blues and greys, tasteful seascapes on the wall, and dashes of driftwood.

Sunny mornings call for lazy alfresco breakfasts in your private garden to steal a glimpse of the nearby sea, hills and fields beyond. Meanwhile, kids and furry friends can run off some energy on the lawns  – the village park, just a one-minute walk away, can help with that too. 

When it's time for some seaside nostalgia, spend bucket-and-spade days down on Salcombe's sandy beaches – just a twenty-minute scenic stroll along the coastal path past the ruins of the village's castle fort. Up the ante with sailing, kayaking, and surfing on the estuary (a five-minute stroll away). Or mooch along to the cafes, restaurants, traditional pubs and ice cream parlours of the village's well-heeled high street (two minutes from your door) – you'll be in good company.

This barn makes an excellent option for a rustic retreat in the heart of the South Devon countryside. Along with the idyllic views, you’ll be welcomed by neutral yet snug rooms (the living area features a cosy log burner) as well as a secure private garden – an ideal spot for children and pups to explore. And when it comes to adventures further afield, it’s just a fifteen-minute drive to the local beaches at Bantham and Bigbury-on-Sea, while beautiful walking trails can be followed straight from the door.

Tucked away in a secluded valley, yet with South Ham's water's edge and Devon's beaches a short drive away, the setting of this cottage is one of a kind. Part of an impressive country estate, kids will love the shared indoor heated pool, tennis court, playground and vast communal lawns found within the grounds – not to mention the trampoline, slide, climbing frame, sit-on tractors and football pitch. It's worth noting this elegant cottage only has a small private courtyard leading off the kitchen. But with those shared terraces overlooking the valley for barbecues and pizza oven nights, we can forgive that.

With its enviable sea views and generous outdoor space, this Salcombe home is an ideal choice for a coastal getaway. Inside, there’s plenty of room to spread out in homely comfort, with all the mod-cons needed for a relaxed stay – be it a cosy fireplace or en-suite bedrooms. What we love the most, though, is the garden. The vast lawn is perfect for little ones or dogs to tear around on, and a selection of seating areas offer options to dine alfresco and soak up the scenery. For a day at the beach, meander down the lane next to the house and onto the footpath, and you’ll find yourself on South Sands Beach.

One of six natural stone cottages tucked away within a secluded valley between Dartmouth and Salcombe, this home's location is idyllic. With no local amenities to walk to, you'll need a car to get out and about. Though you're rarely a fifteen-minute drive from South Devon's sheltered coves and South Ham's water's edge is even closer. There's plenty to keep everyone busy within the cottage's vast communal grounds, too. Think shared indoor heated pool, tennis court, playground, communal lawns and alfresco terraces. Prefer a little more privacy? That wood-burning fire and small suntrap terrace back at the elegant cottage should do nicely.

This beautiful pet-friendly home in Salcombe offers coastal charm in spades. Laid out over two floors, you’ll find thoughtful touches at every turn, from the wine fridge and Sonos speaker system to the Juliet balcony with creek views and the luxurious en-suite with its freestanding tub. Outside, meanwhile, the home ups the ante with a sunny front patio, as well as a back garden complete with a gazebo for alfresco dining, gas and charcoal barbecues and a pizza oven. It’s ideally located a short stroll from Island Street where you can nip over to its artisanal shops for morning croissants and essentials, while Salcombe Castle and the nearby beaches can easily be reached by car. 


The Seaside Riviera

Kitted out in whites and blues, rattan, faux fur throws, and macrame, this beach house in West Buckland will not only make for a very stylish stay, but just so happens to also be the perfect base of operations for any watersports enthusiasts. Bantham beach – a twenty-minute walk away, seven minutes by car if you’re eager to get there – is famous for being a surfing beach, so if you’ve always wanted to try, or maybe you've mastered the surfboard already, this will likely be your first port of call. If that’s not quite in your wheelhouse, there’s always paddleboarding, and if you feel safer on solid ground, simply walk the dunes or spend the day sunbathing instead. Look out for the famous Gastrobus where you can find breakfast, pizzas and snacks. Days can also be spent walking the coastal path to South Milton, exploring the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or golfing at the local course.

Make it back home in time to watch the sunset from the comfort of the garden furniture outside and stay out there for a while before heading back in to get dinner ready – that is, of course, if you haven’t already dined out. Find a spot at the dining table, and after you’ve eaten, clear the table to get a board game set up for some friendly competition. As it gets chillier, light the wood-burning stove before settling in for a bit of late-night television and a chill glass of wine.

Just a short stroll from the centre of Salcombe, this apartment is a refreshing coastal escape. The rooms are bright and breezy, the balcony has beautiful views across the estuary and we love the sweet extras like the Sonos sound system, Netflix and The White Company toiletries. Families should note that child-friendly amenities aren’t available here and that little ones will need to be supervised in the communal garden. Still, it’s a fantastic location with easy access to East Portlemouth's beaches, as well as hiking trails through the surrounding countryside – not to mention private parking for adventures further afield.

With valley views stretching to South Sands, this elevated home has multi-level terraces boasting a hot tub, a fire pit, and a pizza oven. Holidaying with the kids? You can transform two super-king beds into twin rooms for better sleeping arrangements. Spread across three floors, a piano and a games room for table tennis tournaments awaits on the lower level. What's more, Salcombe's high street is a fifteen-minute stroll away, and a path by the garden leads you straight to North Sands beach.

This apartment caught our eye with its impressive sea views and private terrace. It’s also in the perfect spot for refreshing walks along the coastal path, as well as providing easy access to the heart of Hope Cove. Free private parking is available here and two well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you during your stay. Inside, the rooms are family-friendly with bunk beds in the second bedroom and children's amenities available on request. Plus, your host can help organise a range of sweet extras – including paddle board hire.

Outside, the manicured lawns lead down to a private quay and shingle beach – perfect for paddling or crab fishing at low tide. Fancy a change of scene? Central Kingsbridge, with an established restaurant scene, is just a ten-minute walk away.

Also within walking distance are Salcombe's artisan shops, independent eateries, and picturesque harbour, perfect for dog walks in the sun.

There’s no chance of forgetting where you are when you stay in The Bowline. The nautical theme runs through the entire apartment (and when you head out, the entire town of Salcombe), but with good reason. This part of south Devon has some of the most picturesque coast in the country, so it makes sense that the area emphasises that. The apartment itself is charming, with a real homely atmosphere. It’s not huge, but if you don’t try to pack it out, it’s plenty big enough, and Diana’s hosting is top-notch, which goes a very long way.

Fancy long lie-ins and courtyard tipples in the countryside? This former stone barn is nestled in one of Devon's charming villages and may be the answer to an adults-only escape. It's the perfect place to disconnect – though if you are up for an adventure, your host is on hand to help with everything from Champagne cruises to paddleboard hire, and the golden South Milton Sands are just a five-minute drive away.

Embracing Nature

This Grade II listed cottage is a true original among the portfolio of luxury holiday homes in Salcombe. Located in a peaceful corner of Batson but still close to all the action on and off the water – you've got the best of both worlds here. The front garden captures the sun for most of the day and is perfect for morning cuppas. Add in a children's loft bedroom with a TV snug, and you can see why this home caught our eye. If nine of you are sharing, there may be some waiting around in the mornings with just two bathrooms. But in a house this stylish and with so many cosy nooks to relax, we doubt you'll be in a rush. 

Soothing Breeze

Tucked away in a peaceful but central part of Salcombe, this home had our attention the second we caught those views. With a raised position and spread over three floors, the windows are perfect for watching the town’s iconic harbour. Downstairs, the large living space combines the dining room, kitchen, and living room, meaning guests can easily break off into smaller groups while still being together. Nearby, the adventurous can try crabbing along Victoria Quay or even have a go at paddle boarding. You’ll also want to take advantage of the free parking permit, ideal for exploring even more of Devon’s stunning coastline.

The Seashells for Days

Rolling hills, hot tubs and contemporary design are on the cards at this standout home designed by renowned architect Stan Bolt. Perched in the peaceful village of West Charleton and surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, its setting is idyllic. Inside, discover three well-proportioned bedrooms boasting floor-to-ceiling windows to let the outside in and a palatial primary bedroom suite with a private deck and hot tub for the ultimate relaxation. Outside, kids will love exploring the labyrinth of gardens, with water features and a shepherd's hut offering spectacular views across the South Hams. Ready for a change of scene? Charming Salcombe is just a fifteen-minute drive, and Slapton Sands are even closer.

You'll be perched along Victoria Quay's sea wall, only a short stroll from the high street and quayside.
