We love the flairs of modernity and fun at this Victorian townhouse, placed just a ten-minute stroll from Dartmouth's harbour edge.

Spread out over three floors and glowing from top-to-toe in crisp white, this family retreat is a joy to return home to. Vintage memorabilia posters and zesty pops of colour perk the space up a treat, while period features and antique pieces bring all the character and charm.

Over in the first of two living rooms, butter-soft sofas placed beside the fire are more than inviting. As is the Gatsby-esque 1920's mini bar in the grown-up feel sitting room next door – playfully known as the Cocktail Room by the owners. And the shaker-style kitchen makes cooking and entertaining a joy – especially with it's handy opening out to the sitting room so that you can keep an eye on the rest of your troops.

When it's time for some coastal adventures, take a stroll down the hill towards Dartmouth's historic maritime centre (five-minute walk – a little longer when you're coming back up!), stopping at its smart shops, galleries, and boutique bistros along the way. Or for a dose of traditional seaside nostalgia, grab your nets and buckets for crabbing on the embankment before fish and chips down at the harbour's quayside – the views of the bobbing boats are delightful. And when the beach finally calls, hop in the car and you'll be on the glorious sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands in five minutes flat.

Mornings spent here are peaceful and serene and by lunchtime, families will gather along the golden sands for a beautiful day by the sea. Take leisurely afternoon swims in the sea, before making the short walk home for a glass of wine in your garden. As afternoon turns into evening, you'll love the blue skies slipping away into shades of orange and purples, before unveiling a twinkly starry sky. Who could fail to fall in love with this unique home close to the centre of Dartmouth? Everything about it is charming and quirky, with its narrow 17th Century frontage having earned it the nickname 'the skinny house' locally. Set on one of Dartmouth's hillside roads, it also happens to have uninterrupted views over the town, the river and all the way to the sea.

With three main floors, guests enter through an ancient door surrounded by exquisite carvings dating back to 1629, when the town was known for its shipbuilding. Originally the entrance and annexe to Mount Galpine House, owned by the notable Holdsworth family, it's recently been modernised and converted into a delightful home away from home. Packed with character, there's also a contemporary feel, with a glossy galley kitchen and comfy modern furniture – there's not a hint of chintz in sight.

As you would expect, the rooms are narrow, so a living room on the first floor is home to a long, squashy sofa and all eyes are drawn to the window with its stunning view. But there are a few surprises in store too – like the tiny kitchen courtyard, designed to give light and ventilation, and the mezzanine bathroom tucked into the rafters of the vaulted master bedroom. 

But nothing can prepare you for this home's biggest surprise. Newly opened to guests, its beautiful 'secret garden' is located down steep steps on the other side of the narrow road. Built into walls once used as a Second World War gun placement and artillery store, it looks out over the town to defend the river. Along with plenty of natural planting and a courtyard that feels almost magical, there's a wonderful slate-roofed conservatory built against the living wall of rock and moss. Tended by a gardener, it's a hidden gem of outdoor space, with a barbecue for summer evenings.

With its glass-front, the recent remodel maximises the wonderful views of the River Dart and offers splendid visions all the way out to sea. The open-plan concept and seamless transition of indoor to outdoor living creates a comfortable and luxurious space for those that need a few days of solid rest and recuperation. There's a dash of retro here, with a 1950s inspired long table, and bright and bold colours in the bedrooms. Enjoy a soak in the freestanding tub, feel your toes get toasty in front of the fire, and, as always, be sure to explore your beautiful surroundings. In our opinion, this home is a beautiful landmark of the Devon coastline, away from the busy tourist-heavy beaches – it's the idyllic summer getaway.

Positioned overlooking Start Bay on the south coast of Devon, this home has been thoughtfully put together, making the most of its incredible views. Architect designed using a combination of steel, glass and stone, there's more than a hint of a Mediterranean feel to the place. The interiors are elegant and luxurious, with rooms spread across four floors and encompassing a self-contained studio apartment. With all eyes on the rolling hills and the seascape to the rear, the design features several balconies and terraces – all offering places to sit and take it all in. There's so much to love about this home, but some of our favourite features are the cinema room, the floor-to-ceiling views from the dining table and the choice of terraces outside where you can eat your meals together. By day you can explore the coastal paths and villages, or drive to Salcombe or Dartmouth in less than half an hour. If you're bringing your bucket and spade, you'll be pleased to know the beach at Slapton Sands is just a five-minute drive away.

We love the upside-down nature, and the open-plan first-floor living area is a sight to behold, with its high ceilings and beautiful beams. Pay a visit to the castle, or head a little further to Sugary Cove beach – there’s something for all tastes here.

And if you fancy dining out, just hop on a ferry for the short and scenic trip to Dartmouth, where you’ll find a choice of restaurants and pubs.

Going solely by the weathered stone exterior and the wooden beams underneath the vaulted ceiling inside, you could be forgiven for assuming that this home is a rustic getaway in the middle of the countryside. It's actually to be found right on the South West Coast Path, close to three miles of shingle beach. Once a coach house, the property has been given a contemporary makeover inside, with parquet wood flooring underfoot, a kitchen finished in a modern shade of grey and bathrooms with neat brick-style tiling. We're sure you'll find it a perfectly relaxing place to return to after a day of exploring the locale. You may want to delicately broach the discussion of which family members to invite here, because the trip will be legendary. Located on the River Dart, this sprawling three-level property accommodates a party of 12. You will have the whole house to yourselves, so act like you own the place. Beyond the plethora of views, there are plenty of seafaring activities to partake in. Cruise the Kingswear Castle Paddle Steamer, go paddleboarding, rent a boat, or just utilize your direct access to the water. On land: picnic, visit nearby castles, museums, the Greenway House (once home to Agatha Christie), or catch the ferry to the historic maritime town of Dartmouth, which is within walking distance. With six bedrooms and plenty of square footage, everyone will have a chance to stretch out and enjoy alone time. The lucky occupants of two bedrooms on the mid level will have direct access to the balcony terrace. When it’s time to gather for conversation or a meal, there are so many options; from tons of communal space to the remarkable outdoor dining setup. This classic seaside structure is pompous in a good way.

On warm afternoons, spill out onto the terrace for barbecues in the balmy sunshine. Or why not pack a picnic and enjoy a bite to eat in Coronation Park, a five-minute walk away. If you’d like to learn more about the local history, visit the Dartmouth Museum before exploring Bayard’s Cove Fort. 

And of course, no trip to southwest England would be complete without a day at the beach, so slap on your sun cream and make haste to the Blue Flag Award-winning Blackpool Sands, just a ten-minute drive from your doorstep.

When the sun shines, Devon’s beaches could be Mediterranean. The wide expanses of Blackpool Sands can be reached in ten minutes by car, where you can enjoy a day of splashing in the sea and building sandcastles. There are many boat and ferry trips up the River Dart – your hosts are happy to recommend you some excellent day trips as well as tips on the best walks and other excursions. Dartmouth is a twelve-minute walk away, where you’ll find top seafood restaurants and laid-back country pubs.

This modern apartment is part of a local landmark – an old industrial building that's been used as everything from a pottery to a brewery. Now split into a handful of stylish apartments, it's a striking building close to the river and just a short way from the centre of Dartmouth.

Character features mix with clean, contemporary styling here, with exposed stone walls and wooden beams sitting alongside black-framed windows and marble bathrooms. There's a comfortable open-plan layout to the living space with a sleek galley kitchen just off it and cosy leather sofas to curl up on, along with two big bedrooms – each with its own bathroom. First of all, there’s a private terrace, furnished with table and chairs, right on the promenade. Location-wise, you're just a ten-minute stroll from Dartmouth's harbour edge, with smart boutiques, galleries, and bistros along the way.

Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop.

A fifteen-minute stroll from Dartmouth Harbour, this hilltop home boasts fabulous panoramas across the town. The balcony is the best spot to take it all in, along with a G&T made with local gin. Inside, the groovy design takes inspiration from the 1970s. Each room is decorated with colourful wallpaper, retro accents, and mid-century furniture. Three bedrooms are on the ground floor, and one has a double bunk best suited to children. You'll find the open-plan living space on the first floor, taking advantage of the views. This 19th-century cottage in the heart of Dittisham is ideal for a small family wanting a tranquil valley view. Overlooking Mill Creek, it's peaceful with plenty of homely charm. Though it has been modernised, some of the original features remain. If you are looking for something sleek, this home might not be for you, but it is well-kept, bright and plenty comfortable. Here, you can hire a boat to explore the valley at your own pace, and there's also ample opportunity for paddle boarding or kayaking. Dartmouth is a short drive away, and so are Kingswear and Totnes.

Overlooking an arm of the Salcombe-Kingsbridge Estuary, this home not only has a stunning waterfront view in its arsenal, but the rolling countryside packs a pretty impressive punch, too. For that very valid reason, we recommend spending as much time as possible out on the decked terrace – whether that’s in the hot tub or simply enjoying a cup of coffee in one of the outdoor chairs is completely up to you, as long as you’re keeping an eye on the horizon. 

Popular with paddle boarders, you might even spot a few going by when you’re taking in the water views. Also completely fine, and you might find yourself frequenting the famous Crabshell Inn. Explore the market town of Kingsbridge, drive to Salcombe and visit as much of South Devon as you can manage in between all of the relaxation you’ll be doing in this home.
