Although the city of York is famed for its historical buildings, this contemporary apartment development is well worth your time, especially this second-floor corner home. In the living room, there are huge floor-to-ceiling windows that let in plenty of natural light, but also look out to a pleasant view of the River Foss flowing by. On warm days, you can draw back the glass door and enjoy the breeze on your face while enjoying this peaceful scene. Despite this distraction, the interior doesn't rest on its laurels, though. There's underfloor heating for the chillier months and a stylish kitchen to keep you fuelled for wandering around the city. Thankfully, an awful lot awaits nearby. York Castle Museum takes around five minutes to reach on foot, as does JORVIK Viking Centre. 

Freedom of the City

Steeped in ancient history within its 13th-century City Walls, the centre of York is a hub of historical landmarks from all eras. Whether you’re hoping to visit a gothic cathedral from the 1400s, or a museum telling tales of Viking life in 900 AD, you’ll have a successful stay in this magical town. Just a fourteen-minute walk from all the delights of the city centre, this apartment sits in a perfect location for discovering York’s many sights. But to give you a break from medieval history, the decor is modern, yet opulent. We love the bright, open-plan living space, with neutral walls and stylish charcoal kitchen cabinets. Near the large windows, transparent, perspex dining chairs with chrome frames contrast beautifully against the regal purple of the sofa. And the luxurious velvet headboard in the bedroom is simply made for a peaceful slumber. In the morning, while you’ve got ancient and urban sights aplenty, there’s also a natural side to the area. Not only is your home just an eight-minute walk to the banks of the River Foss, but within an hour by car, you can lose yourself in the depths of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Milk & Sugar

Nestled between the North York Moors and Yorkshire Coast, this home offers up the best of both worlds. With a charming farmhouse style running throughout, this is a homely retreat for up to six people. You won’t even need to leave your four-legged friends behind as they’re welcome here too – just bear in mind the garden’s not fenced and there’s livestock about. Locally, a visit to Castle Howard Estate is a must, not least because with a stay here, you get complimentary passes and a voucher to use in the farm shop – just don’t forget to check the seasonal opening hours before your stay. 

Serenity Song

Expertly renovated, this former piggery is anything but a pigsty. The interiors are bright, contemporary and poised. A trendy white and grey colour scheme is beautifully livened up with botanical flourishes and earthy green tones, particularly in the bedroom. Take advantage of balmy afternoons with a late lunch on your private courtyard – accompany your spread with local produce from the farm shop just around the corner. After a strong cup of tea and a hunk of sticky parkin, strap on your walking shoes and explore the endless bridleways and trails of the Howardian Hills that surround your home. If you’re keen to explore further afield, an hour’s drive places you at the coast – take your pick between sunny Scarborough and quirky Whitby. When it’s time to call it a day, just before you arrive home to your comfortable king-size bed, make a pit stop in nearby Malton for hearty northern grub – it’s not called Yorkshire’s Food Capital for nothing.

The Old Piggery

Modern, colourful and supremely comfortable, this apartment on the west side of the River Ouse is an excellent base from which to explore the best of York. Inside the home, it’s all sumptuous soft furnishings in the living space and sleek mod-cons in the kitchenette. Head through to the bedroom and you’ll find a hotel-quality bed that ensures a blissful night’s sleep. 

After a cup of Yorkshire tea and a hunk of local Moggy cake, pull on your comfiest shoes and hit the streets. The famous Jorvik Viking Centre and medieval Shambles are less than a fifteen-minute walk from your doorstep. Enjoy a mosey around York Minster, reached in twelve minutes, then stroll around the peaceful Museum Gardens. When you’re ready for something to eat, Micklegate, with its selection of bars and restaurants, is just footsteps away.

The Keepsake

This stylish home is a brilliant option for a York getaway. Just a twenty-five-minute walk along the river from the iconic spires of York Minster, you'll be well-placed to explore this historic city. Start the day off with a morning stroll around Rowntree Park – it's just across the river – then make your way towards the restaurants, cafes, pubs and eateries and enjoy lunch in York's bustling city centre. Afterwards, visit Shambles Market for a bit of shopping or, if you consider yourself a history buff, have a look at the many museums and landmarks in town.

Following your jam-packed day of sightseeing, make your way back to this lovely homestead and get comfortable in the living area. The plump L-shaped sofa is perfect for sprawling – plop yourself down and enjoy a glass of wine before preparing a delicious dinner together in the kitchen. We can't help but swoon over the character features, from the hardwood floors to the stained glass front door. Every room oozes warmth and cosiness. 

On winter evenings, the wood-burner in the dining area is a welcome reprieve from the frosty air, while the charming conservatory is the ideal spot to while away a few hours with an engrossing book. We also adore the small private garden – during the summer, bring out a chair and dine alfresco under the Northern sunshine.

Give Me That Northern Soul

Founded in 71 AD, you might say that York is a rather old city. With Romans and Vikings both having staked claim to this glorious gem of Yorkshire, you’ll find historical intrigue everywhere you turn. However, an eight-minute walk from the incredibly well-preserved medieval shopping street, The Shambles, this studio apartment offers an altogether more modern side of the city. In a recently renovated development by the riverside, the setting is truly peaceful. You’ve got plenty of spots for relaxing inside too – try the huge, plush, Chesterfield sofa for size, or kick back in the cushioned bamboo armchair. A trendy exposed brickwork wall frames an enormous, arched sash window, illuminating the stylish living area and its quartz-topped kitchen. With a Klimt canvas up on the wall, as well as dainty plants placed around the home, plenty of thought has gone into the decor. And of course, being a studio, there are some impressive space-saving ideas. After an evening spent in a traditional local pub, sampling a few ales, come home and pull the bed down from the wall when you’re ready to rest your head.

Cask Ale

If there's a slightly sweet smell lingering in the air around this home, it's because for many years this site was the Rowntrees factory. Specifically, the building this home is part of is the former cocoa warehouse on the wharf. Recently converted, and still so new it practically sparkles, it's a fabulous little base for a couple or a solo traveller. The name of the game here is practicality and comfort, so while it's not exactly huge, it is perfectly formed. We love the arched window and the exposed brick wall it sits within. There's a comfy, wall-mounted Murphy bed, a seating area and a modern shower room, while the smart kitchen even finds room for a dining table. Step outside and you're on the riverside, just a five-minute stroll from the city centre, The Shambles and many of York's biggest attractions.

Little Box of Chocolates

Welcome to our quiet, cosy terraced home in York. Our beautiful 2 bedroom house is the perfect way to explore the city and escape all the crowds after a busy day exploring. This beautiful property has been stylishly finished with comfort in mind and comes with free on street parking and lots of open space inside.

Located a short 10 minute walk from the city centre, this home provides the perfect base for groups and families of up to 4 people to enjoy this magnificent city.

This beautiful home away from home has been decorated to a very high standard with modern but cosy fixtures and fittings throughout.

The house opens into the living room which has been recently redecorated with a gorgeous, comfortable sofa and new TV. There is plenty of space to relax after a long day exploring this wonderful city.

Moving through the house brings guests into the kitchen/dining room. The kitchen has been stocked to provide everything guests need for a comfortable stay and the dining room can seat 4 people. Beyond, guests will find the sink, along with washing machine and fridge freezer.

At the end of the hallway you will find a new, beautifully fitted bathroom with shower.

Upstairs guests will find two spacious and beautifully decorated double bedrooms, each with lots of space and storage.

There is a lovely back yard for guests to use, complete with seating area for outdoor dining.

Vintage Terrace Retreat

Located within the Castle Howard Estate, this 18th-century stone farmhouse is the perfect setting for a restorative retreat. From the wood-burning fires and cosy sitting rooms to the antique furnishings and snug bedrooms, it’s the ideal spot for families and groups to relax and unwind. Outside, you'll find a private enclosed garden (with a barbecue) and plenty to explore in the surroundings. Guests also receive day entry passes to the Castle along with a voucher for the farm shop, plus it's within easy reach of the North York Moors National Park.

Sun Cottage

Located right by the magnificent York Minster, this 18th-century townhouse enjoys a quiet yet central location. Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.

The Royal Ledge

This home might be petite, but it has everything you need for a fabulous stay in York. Just a stone's throw away from the city centre, it's a great place to begin your adventures and unwind in style. 

Step inside, and you'll find a comfy living room complete with cheerful pops of colour and a squashy sofa. The open-plan set-up makes it easy to spend quality time together if you're visiting with your partner – open a bottle of wine and chat while you cook your favourite dishes together. There's even a private courtyard, so you can round off your evening with a nightcap in the fresh air. And, the chic bedroom promises a great night's sleep – you'll love the high ceilings and statement light fixtures.

York's historic city walls are a seven-minute stroll away, and will help you to navigate the area. The famous cathedral, York Minster, is a twelve-minute walk away, along with York Art Gallery and the Museum Gardens. And, if some retail therapy is in order, then head for the Shambles – it's one of the most unique shopping streets in the UK.
