The Chestnut Cottage

A five-minute walk from Brook’s rugged coastal path and golden beach, the fresh sea air is never far from this isolated cottage. In a huge old farmhouse-style building, your quarters have tons of countryside character. Timber beams support the high vaulted ceilings, warm wooden flooring can be found throughout, and original, rustic barn-like doors keep things traditional. That said, every modern convenience is available, although some have a vintage edge like the red Smeg fridge. Leisure certainly hasn’t been forgotten about either, with board games and an outdoor play area to keep the whole family entertained. While the little ones romp in the garden, relax on the patio with a pot of tea. And when dinnertime strikes, you can light up the barbecue to dine alfresco on a balmy summer evening. As the home is located in the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (one of only forty-six such spots in the UK), the prized landscape is exceptional for walking, fossil hunting, and windsurfing. But if you do fancy something a little more urban, the island’s main town of Cowes is just a twenty-five-minute drive.

Five minutes on foot from the rugged Brook coastal path and its picturesque beach, you’ll love coming home to this cosy, cottage-like apartment after a windswept day by the shores. In a rustic, stone farmhouse, this home has a wonderfully rural character from the offset. With original features of the building standing strong, such as chunky timber ceiling beams, wooden floors, and barn-style doors, we love the traditional feel of the home. The soft furnishings make the living space warm and inviting, with natural light streaming in through skylights. Your host has also made sure that you can keep the whole family entertained – the playground outside has a slide and trampoline for the kids, as well as table tennis (which might end up being an activity for ‘big kids’ too). Light up the barbecue and sit out on the patio for a grill and a glass of wine, before a night of stargazing.

Built in 1929, Art Deco House showcases impressive features that take you back to a bygone era of lavish magnificence and opulent luxuries. It sits atop a cliff overlooking Sandown Bay, and there’s great access to the cliff edge and spectacular views of the Channel. Once you get inside, it becomes clear that it’s a labour of love. All of the furniture and art has been meticulously sourced from English and Viennese beginnings, and it ends up feeling like something from an F Scott Fitzgerald novel – especially, as you wander around the beautifully manicured gardens. It doesn’t hurt that one of the owners is an expert on Champagne either, and can provide you with a personal selection. In a secluded spot down a single-track lane, this contemporary barn is a welcome surprise. Renovated in the style of Caruso St John (the famed architects behind the Tate Modern), it's a striking tribute to modern, eco-friendly design – solar panels and a heat source pump power the heating and hot water. The inside is just as dramatic, with copper light fittings, high-design furniture and large picture windows that make the most of the garden views. All the mod-cons are accounted for, including rain showers, a home-cinema projector and underfloor heating to keep chilly toes at bay. Throw a log on the wood-burner for extra cosiness and snuggle up in the window seat with a good book. Outside there's even more to love, including a private pool, leafy garden and a calisthenic gym space that works as a yoga or kickboxing studio. After a morning workout and a dip in the pool, enjoy a walk around Manor Bottom, or if you want to stretch your legs even more, the seaside town of Ventnor is a forty-minute walk away. But our favourite part were the hosts. The amount of love Steven and Agnieszka put into making their guests' stay extra special is quite something. No detail has been overlooked, be it organic toiletries, a welcome hamper filled with local jams and chutneys or arranging on-site massages. They even go the extra mile to carefully curate books and music for each individual guest – safe to say, you'll be in excellent hands.

The house itself is designed to feel like a cabin with the comforts of modern touches. A bright living room and kitchen provide cosy convenience, yet the home comes to life in the cute kitchen garden and sprawling outside space. 

The kitchen garden is where we suggest spending sunrise or sunset. It offers one of the prettiest views on the island, and it's shaped in comfy seats for unbridled luxury. 

Adjacent to the kitchen garden, you'll find a diverse room tailored to all activities. You can fire up the projector on colder nights to watch your favourite film, or use it as a yoga studio in the mornings for a wholesome start to the day.

How you spend that day is all up to you. You're welcome to use the home's four bikes to explore the gorgeous scenery, or mosey over to the vineyards to pick up some wine for the evenings. 

If you prefer your adventures on the water, your host provides access to kayaks and paddle boards so you can traverse the water. There's also a private jetty, an idyllic spot to sit with a slice of pizza from the pizza oven and bask in the serenity. You also have exclusive access to the vineyards – and there's even a helipad should you wish to arrive in style!

This restored heritage building in Niton, Isle of Wight sits to the east of the lighthouse site and offers a perfect retreat for a family gathering or a group of friends. While you’ll share a garden with the neighbouring cottages, you’ll have a private courtyard to share dinners alfresco. The home is a little dated but perfectly practical and comfortable for those seeking a unique location. The signal is patchy here, so it’s really a place to hit reset. Nearby, you can enjoy exploring Carisbrooke Castle, Brading Roman Villa, Arreton Old Village or take a stroll around Rosemary Vineyard. And if you’re bringing your furry friend, you’ll find plenty of dog-friendly beaches.

In the popular South Coast resort of Southsea, Portsmouth, you will find this fantastic home which boasts easy walking distance to the beach, a games room, a cinema room, and an outdoor terrace complete with a hot tub. So, whether the sun is shining during the summer or it’s a typical British day filled with rain, there is always something fun to do here. 

Spend your days on the beach or explore the vibrant city of Portsmouth with its fantastic outlet shopping at Gunwharf Quays – reachable in less than ten minutes by car. Enjoy a game of pool before dinnertime, and listen to songs from the jukebox as a backdrop to your family competition. Then, after dinner, snuggle up in the cinema room and watch a film. When the little ones are all tucked up in bed, what could be a better way to end the night than with a glass of wine in the hot tub?

Pier I Am

This cosy cabin is the perfect little bolthole for couples wanting to escape to the country. The location right at the heart of the New Forest means you’ll feel miles away from the stresses of daily life – as you fly down country lanes on your bike, you’ll feel your worries melting away. 

The cabin is just outside of Brockenhurst, in an area that feels secluded but isn’t too far from the nearest shops. You can stroll to the pub in fifteen minutes, which is a welcome sight after a day spent hiking the trails. A four-minute drive will get you to beautiful Beaulieu, which is well worth an afternoon strolling around after lunch in a cafe. The abbey is just six minutes from the cabin – the tranquil ruins are always popular with history buffs. 

If you need an ice cream on the beach for it to feel like a holiday, you’re in luck. Fifteen minutes by car will have you on a sandy shore, though we can’t guarantee it’ll be paddling weather. 

For us, the real joy of this cabin is its countryside setting. Walking just five minutes from the front door will see you on walking and cycling trails. When your feet start to feel sore, head back to the cabin to soak in the luxurious claw-foot tub before spending the evening in front of the fire. Absolute bliss.

Modern-day Gatsbys should feel right at home at this glorious art-deco manor. You'll find it in the south of the Isle of Wight, with an unbeatable clifftop location and extraordinary views down to the wind-whipped coastline. It has a number of striking original features including ornate stained-glass windows, period lampshades, a grand spiral staircase, polished wood panelling - and even an old boot cleaner. Throw a 1920s-style party in the dining room (the table seats 22) with drinks until dawn before retiring to your lavishly appointed bedroom. Go outside and you'll find things are just as spectacular, thanks to the shimmering water feature, glamorous terrace and immaculately landscaped garden. And if you run out of champagne don't fear, you're only a short walk from the shops and restaurants in lively Shanklin.

This pretty farm building conversion offers all the independence of a private cottage with its own garden, with the added bonus of communal grounds where children can run free. Ideal for families, it's part of a small complex of similar homes just a five-minute walk from the nearest beach. Comfortable and smart, the single-storey cottage shows off its heritage with a stable door, high ceilings, oak beams and skylights, while the open-plan living space is perfect for keeping an eye on the kids as you whip up meals in the country kitchen. Bedrooms are cosy and relaxing, and we love the double doors that open out into the garden from the master bedroom. Outside, make use of the barbecue in your enclosed garden, or take the kids to the communal play area. With a fort, swings and a sunken trampoline, it's bound to be a hit. Walk to some of the area's best beaches from your doorstep, stroll to the local pub and head off on all sorts of adventures around the island by car.

This warm and homely country estate sits on the edge of Beaulieu River. Prepare yourself for seriously idyllic country scenes. Ornate, country furniture in every room, classic artwork festooning the walls, and a chic modern kitchen and dining space create a traditional English space with a lot of character. From the super comfortable lounge to the cosy TV room, this home is ideal for a country getaway with family and friends. Outside, you'll find the lush greens of a well-kept garden, with a lounge and alfresco dining area. Beyond, the serene Beaulieu River, which you can explore in a canoe or kayak, is just a leisurely walk away through the stunning green New Forest.

This old farmhouse was built in 1820 and sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Isle of Wight. It's a seven-minute walk to Brook Beach if you want to take in the sea air, and the surrounding hills and valleys are filled with walking trails. Views from the farmhouse take in the patchwork of fields around you. On the outside, it's typically 19th-century with a stone facade and pitch-roofed doorway. We were taken aback at how modern it is inside, with soothing sofas in stone grey and sleek Scandi-wood floors. The custom-designed kitchen is a haven for cooking with beautiful granite-topped counters, a big range cooker and a Belfast sink. Breakfast is a sunny affair in the dining room with its curved bay of windows. From here, you can head out the French doors to the private patio, where a picnic bench provides a spot for a morning cup of tea and a built-in brick barbecue means summer dining outdoors. Or, head to the communal gardens and let the kids play in the fort, swings, slide and trampoline.

Farmhouse

Nestled in Niton on the Isle of Wight, this restored heritage building is an ideal getaway for families or groups of friends. While the garden is shared with neighbouring cottages, a private courtyard awaits your alfresco dinners. The home is modern and practical, though some of the decor feels slightly dated – besides, it’s the setting that makes this place so unique. The signal is patchy here, but we think you’ll probably be too busy exploring to really notice. Explore Carisbrooke Castle, Brading Roman Villa, and Arreton Old Village, or take a stroll along Castlehaven Beach – it’s dog-friendly for those bringing their furry companions.

This building was once a brickworks, but has since been transformed into a cosy getaway in the New Forest National Park. There's plenty of traditional charm to be found here, from the towering chimneys and beamed ceilings, to the antique furniture and oil paintings on the walls. It has large sitting room and dining area, perfect for parties of family and friends to spend time together over lively brunches and long, indulgent dinners. Outside you'll find a lush garden with green lawns for picnicking and a terrace where you can unwind in the tranquil Hampshire countryside. If you're visiting during the summer months, a yurt is available to fit in even more guests. The peaceful Beaulieu River is right on your doorstep, where you can do some wild swimming or even take a boat taxi downstream. If you find yourself wanting some more action, you can hike, cycle or even kayak through the national park, before stopping off at one of the traditional local pubs for some hearty local fare.

This Grade-II listed home's white exterior and large bay windows make this address stand out from its neighbours and it all looks rather palatial, we must say. This impression continues when you head inside and spot the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, the ornamental fireplaces and the lacquer dining table. Step out of the French doors and you'll find yourself in the home's garden, which comes with tidy plant rows, an alfresco seating area and a hot tub for those warm summer evenings — or even those chilly winter ones if you're feeling hardy. The home's location in the seaside village of Hamble-le-Rice presents a plethora of distractions to keep your guests entertained. The quaint wooden shutters on the windows add character to the space – it’s easy to imagine cosy nights snuggled down here after a day out walking in the New Forest National Park or exploring the cobbled streets nearby. 

The kitchen boasts all the mod cons you could wish for and blue cabinetry – a colour scheme that’s carried throughout this cottage with distinctive touches that give a nod to your proximity to the coast. For nights in, you can rustle up a delicious home-cooked meals and in the summer months, pour yourself a glass of wine and settle down on the terrace to enjoy your dinner alfresco. 

For days out you’re perfectly placed to wander the High Street's shops, explore the old town quay or even hop on the ferry to head over to the Isle of Wight. With so much to do and your cottage waiting to welcome you home, you’ll enjoy a memorable stay. 

Hideaway in the Heart

Situated on England's sunny south coast — well, relatively speaking — this home has plenty of ways for you to enjoy a summer's day. The terrace out through the French doors has a glorious view of the River Hamble where you can enjoy paddleboarding, sailing, riverside walks or use as a base for sailing regattas. You can even arrive by boat and moor at the Elephant Boatyard opposite the house. Elsewhere in the large garden, there's a wooden summerhouse with a log burner that brings a touch of apres-ski glamour to this corner of Hampshire, great for cosy sundowners in the winter and family barbecues in summer.

Inside, the preference for wooden interiors continues in the main house, especially in the open-concept living space with its parquet flooring, roof beams and rustic dining table next to a set of tall windows. As well as a huge corner kitchen complete with a sociable island, there are two reception rooms, one with another wood burner for those autumnal evenings.

In the local area, you'll find it easy to enjoy the great outdoors. The River Hamble Country Park is only ten minutes' drive away and is good for a rural walk finished off with a hot chocolate. You're also opposite the Jolly Sailor pub which has roaring log fires in the winter and a great menu for outdoor dining. The centre of Southampton takes just over twenty minutes in the car whenever you fancy a change of pace.

Five minutes from the city centre, ten minutes from Ocean Village and a couple of minutes from Oxford Street, this modern apartment is in the middle of all the must-see areas. Head in any direction and you'll probably stumble across the vibrant areas of the city in a few minutes. 

For a day of shopping, Oxford Street is the first place on your itinerary. It's lined with all the notable high-street stores and nearby to a huge shopping centre filled with on-trend stores and eating spots. You can spend a whole day perusing the aisles for cool clothing. 

If you prefer to take the day at a leisurely pace, head to the welcoming ambiance of Ocean Village. The marina is shaped by vibrant bars and restaurants offering alfresco dining near the water. Sharing delicious food and drink in the warm evenings by the marina is one of the highlights of the city.

However you spend your days, the apartment is made for putting your feet up and relaxing. A large TV shows your favourite films and TV series, whilst the glass dining table is made for sharing meals. For a treat, sit on the balcony with a glass of wine or beer and enjoy the peace and privacy.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the water of the harbour and admire the boats in Ocean Village – just a short ten-minute walk from your door. Or, indulge in a shopping spree at West Quay shopping centre – reachable in twelve minutes on foot. 

What’s more, the Red Funnel Ferries that will take you to the Isle of Wight for the day are just a fourteen-minute walk or four-minute drive from this home, and if you find yourself inspired, the apartment’s desk space is the perfect spot to begin a novel set on the island. Then, after a fantastic meal out or a home-cooked dinner, we would love to head up to the shared roof terrace on the sixth floor at sunset to admire the stunning views of the cityscape.

Coastal retreats don't come much more refined or elegant than this Grade II listed abode. And locations don't get much better either. Perched right in the heart of the Georgian market town of Lymington, the New Forest and coast are both less than a ten-minute drive. And Solent's quayside is even closer –⁠ a six-minute stroll, to be precise.

Inside, every corner of this luxurious home feels like an interior magazine come to life. Oil paintings and antique pieces bring a touch of heritage, while pops of blue accents unify the space and remind us that the Solent is never far away. 

In winter months, curl up beside the crackling fire in the first-floor drawing room –⁠ that chesterfield sofa has your name all over it. Then gather your ensemble in the elegant dining room with a blazing hearth at its heart to host a glamourous dinner party. Everything you need to flex your culinary muscles is in the made-for-action kitchen, and the Sonos speakers will set the ambience.

Set on the owners' farm, and right next to their stables, you'll have a great view of the horses being fed each morning – something that's bound to excite the children. 

Anything but rustic, the interiors here are stylish and high-end, with wide-plank flooring and plenty of fabulous stripped back timber beams. The huge living space, surrounded on three sides by floor-to-ceiling windows, is the heart of the home, with squashy velvet sofas, a dining table for six and a delightful kitchen. Equipped with everything you could need, keen cooks will be in their element.

Set in the South Downs National Park, with views across the rolling hills, here you'll have your own private lawned garden area and you're welcome to explore the rest of the grounds. It's a twenty-minute walk into the pretty market town of Bishop's Waltham, with its shops and pubs, and don't miss a visit to the ruins of its historic abbey. And it's less than a half-hour drive to both Southampton and Portsmouth.

A historic gatehouse on the grounds of the Shaftesbury Estate in rural Dorset, this petite one-bed lodge has recently undergone a loving refurb by one of the estate owners, Lady Shaftesbury. She obviously has a great eye for design, as her palette of delicious apricot and duck egg blue stylishly updates this vintage cottage into not just a twenty-first-century home, but a home with charm and character. There are plenty of thoughtful touches we found exquisite, from soft dressing gowns to the complementary breakfast hamper – and everything, from Egyptian cotton bedding to the plush sofas, is of boutique hotel quality. The hosts are attentive, meticulously committed to making sure your every whim is met.
