When you’re not uncovering the town’s maritime history at The Historic Dockyard, enjoy a day out in the Big Smoke – catch the train from nearby Chatham station to arrive at London Victoria in less than an hour. Or, why not jump in the car and explore neighbouring Rochester – the eponymous castle is a mere five-minute drive away.

Back at the apartment, a white-washed living space with muted tones and dark blue accents feels inviting and relaxing. Located in the picturesque village of Ash, this farmhouse is a gorgeous escape, best suited for a large family or a group of friends who love the Kent countryside. The architecture hasn't changed much since the house was built well over a century ago, and you can still see a variety of period features, even though the home has recently undergone a careful refurbishment. This is most obvious in the homey kitchen with its hanging pots and pans, supported by a beautiful vaulted ceiling, as well as the antique fireplace in the living room. Thanks to the size of the garden, everyone can find their little spot and relax alone, or get together for an alfresco meal freshly cooked on the barbecue. But our favourite space has to be the library, where you can browse the host's wide collection of titles and pretend you're the Lord or Lady of the manor. There's a local pub just a few minutes away if you're in need of refreshment, along with a village shop. Plus, with the medieval town of Sandwich just a ten-minute drive away, along with a nearby golf course and wildlife park, there's plenty to entertain the whole family.

Families looking for a little beachside luxury should look no further than this chalet-like home. The clapboard facade makes it feel as though you’re staying in a glorious, lavish beach hut on the edge of Camber Sands — less than a minute's walk away, in fact. 

Inside, the luxurious beach feel continues with lightwood floor and a kitchen that's artfully distressed-looking while maintaining its sleek edges. The dining room really draws the eye, with beautiful hand-crafted chairs and a dresser straight from the markets of India – just like the ornate bed frames and lighting fixtures seen in some of the bedrooms. 

A separate, dedicated kids playroom lets you know this place is family-friendly and the fun for little ones doesn’t stop there. Outside you’ll find a pirate ship playground at the end of the long, immaculate lawn. 

There are treats out here for grown-ups too in the shape of a bubbling hot tub, hammocks, and comfy canopied day beds for when the sun is shining, plus an Indian sandstone patio dining area with an outdoor kitchen, two barbecues, bar and pizza oven. After the sun sets, everyone can keep warm around the fire pit as the sky is speckled with stars. 

In terms of location, there are plenty of nearby beaches along the East Sussex coastline, as well as a handful of restaurants and pubs in the surrounding Camber. A little further afield, High Weald AONB can be reached in just over ten minutes' drive if you fancy discovering ancient paths and wooded hillsides.

It's not just the mid-century furniture and muted colour palette in this home that takes influence from the Scandinavians. Out in the garden, there's an electric-powered sauna, as well as a bathtub on the patio that you can fill with cold water for the full authentic experience. Once you've finished flitting between the two, you can rest up in the cosy summer house. The host has put together a list of local therapists and this private space is perfect for treatments. Back inside, there's plenty of equipment to keep those particular about their coffee happy, including an espresso machine, milk frother, percolator, grinder and fresh beans from a local roaster. When you're feeling suitably caffeinated, the charming seaside town of Margate is waiting to be explored. The main beach takes about a quarter of an hour to reach on foot, as does the Dreamland Amusement Park, which often hosts concerts, club nights and events.

A delightfully quaint bolthole set in the beautiful Kent countryside, this home's modern black facade is complemented by a rustic and quirky interior. The fully-equipped kitchen has soft wooden tables and open shelves, creating a homely and relaxing space to gather over a homecooked meal. It opens onto the trendy and whimsical lounge, with its yellow armchair and eclectic decorations. We loved the garden most of all – slide open the glass doors and step outside into the fresh air. Outside, you'll find an alfresco dining area – the perfect spot to tuck into the cake host Georgina leaves for you – and a cosy lounge area surrounding an open-air fire pit, which is ideal for enjoying a moment of calm while watching the sunset. You may even spot the resident kingfisher as it flies from the pond. When you're ready for sleep, drift off in the plush beds in the country-style bedrooms, then wake up feeling well-rested and ready to explore Kent. You're perfectly located for adventures – make the twenty-minute drive to the coastal Dungeness National Nature Reserve or reward yourself after a stroll with a pint in one of the delicious pubs nearby.

Located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, within the grounds of a 50-acre estate, this detached oast house overlooks fields and paddocks from its southwest-facing terrace and lawned garden. You may spot the local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and barn owls. If you have children with you, though, a fenced-off pond is nearby, so they'll need to be supervised. Inside, there's a log burner for cosy nights in and a charming circular main bedroom. It would be tempting to spend all your time here, wouldn't it? But that would be a shame as Bewl Water is a ten-minute stroll away, pretty Tunbridge Wells is a twenty-minute drive, and Camber Sands is a forty-minute ride.

Let’s face it – it’s that ginormous indoor private pool and state-of-the-art Swedish sauna taking all the limelight at this barn conversion property, and rightly so. It’s a luxury few expect for a home nestled away in the quiet Kent countryside. In warmer months, slide the bifold doors right back to let the sunshine in and enjoy views of the pristinely manicured gardens beyond. You could easily while away the whole day – in fact, the entire week - padding between the pool, sauna, and outdoor sun loungers, with an occasional barbecue thrown in, to spice things up. And there are more welcome surprises inside this home too. The spacious light-filled lounge and dining area overlooks the swimming pool – handy for keeping an eye on poolside antics even when you’re indoors. And upstairs, there’s a secondary lounge with Juliet balcony doors revealing views of the gardens and distant rolling fields. With such vast countryside views, you could feel a million miles from anywhere here, but you’re not as remote as you first thought. The pretty neighbouring villages all have excellent pubs serving hearty food, and the bustling cathedral town of Canterbury is just over a twenty-minute drive away. And let’s not forget the coast - pack up a picnic, and you can be on the sweeping sandy shores of Folkestone in thirty minutes flat.

Overlooking the Kent Downs, within ten acres of land belonging to a Grade II listed farmhouse, the setting of this converted stable is postcard-perfect. Inside, the owners have nailed the modern rustic interior brief. While outside, expect a shared courtyard and garden for barbecues and stargazing beside the firepit. Bringing the kids along? Little ones will love the shared play area and meeting the resident animals. If you fancy eating out, nearby Hastingleigh has a pub within walking distance, and Wye is just an eight-minute drive. Or head to the coast for lip-smacking fish and chips –⁠ Whitstable is a scenic forty-five-minute drive away.

Meadows & Stables

This converted grain store in the heart of the Kent countryside is as pretty as a picture. A perfect getaway for two, it manages to be both compact and spacious, with an open-plan living area that you’ll love to spend time in.

The surrounding area has plenty to offer if you can tear yourself away though. You’re only a couple of miles away from the all-important English country pub, and both Hever Castle and Penshurst Place are a ten-minute drive. 

Pull on your comfy boots and set out on a hike through the countryside, take a day trip to the refined spa town of Tunbridge Wells (twenty-five minutes by car), visit Chartwell (home of Winston Churchill) or just snuggle up in your little nest and forget about the rest of the world. 

There’s an outdoor seating area if you fancy dining alfresco, and from May to September, you can use the host’s lovely outdoor pool and terrace as well.

Grain of Truth

This blue bungalow is the perfect getaway for two, with high A-frame ceilings, sand-coloured wooden floors and bright living spaces. We'd describe the aesthetic as contemporary coastal – rattan lighting fixtures, leafy houseplants and plush furnishings bring a beachy bohemian air, while the sleek kitchen and crisp, clean lines are elegant and modern. After a long day on the coast, snuggle up in front of the electric fire for a cosy night at home. If you're in the mood to cook, the blue and yellow kitchen has everything you'll need, so let your culinary skills run wild. On sunny days, enjoy your feast in the garden, which is shielded from the main house by clever bamboo screens. There's even a desk in the bedroom if you need to do some remote working. But our favourite part is the location – you're just a fifteen-minute walk from Deal Castle Beach and the wonderful Kent coastline. Enjoy a delicious meal at one of the many seaside restaurants, shop the local boutiques, browse the many art galleries and enjoy a romp around Deal Castle. With the rest of the White Cliffs Country easily accessed by car, it's the ideal spot for a romantic retreat by the sea.

Positioned directly on Dungeness's public beach, this former foghorn testing station has been fully renovated into a unique getaway for two. The nearby lighthouse's foghorn still works, although we much prefer the idea of waking up to the sound of the waves and seagulls. The sea is literally on your doorstep, and huge glass doors and a small terrace maximise the idyllic views. It's more of a studio than a one-bed, but we like the single-level layout. Although phone signal is patchy here and there's no proper TV, there is wi-fi for remote working and streaming. That said, the Bose speaker system, wood burner and teak bathtub are all you need to truly unwind.

A stone’s throw from Camber Sands, this stylish home takes beach shack to glamorous new heights, making it the perfect coastal retreat for friendly get-togethers and extended families. 

The interior is characterfully designed using reclaimed and antique materials, offering a revitalised version of seaside chic. The host is evidently a fan of up-cycling – look out for creative touches such as repurposed doors, stain-glass windows and rustic radiators. We especially love the wood-panelled walls and flooring that shape the space as a whole, while the comfortable furnishings, neutral tones and wood-burning stove keep things cosy. 

Here, as much attention has been paid to comfort as it has to style – drift off to sleep beneath Egyptian cotton bed linen or relax on leather sofas in the sitting room. But, don’t spend too much time inside as this home is close to an expansive sandy beach. Enjoy exclusive use of a private “No Through” sandy road, with access only to residents, and walk to the sand dunes in two minutes. End the day with early-evening sundowners on the front porch, sharing anecdotes and listening to the waves lapping in and out of the shore, before heading into the local village for a spot of traditional pub grub, five minutes away on foot.

Go off gird for a while beside the sweeping coastal banks of the desirable Granville Cliff Estate in Seasalter - the location of this contemporary, airy home. The estate's private beach, just a minute’s walk from the property, takes centre stage here. Grab the home's paddleboard and two-person kayak and head for the sea, or try beachcombing for seashells - the coast goes on for miles. And you can always pop back to rustle up a picnic when tummies start to rumble or stroll along to the acclaimed Sportsman pub to feast on oysters. Back at the sea-facing chalet bungalow, an effortlessly stylish home awaits. Expect vintage mid-century furniture, unique artwork, and a modern kitchen made for action. Ideal for groups of friends and family coming together, you’ll love how spread out the home feels. The self-contained apartment upstairs with a separate kitchen will be a bonus for anyone looking for that extra bit of privacy. And there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained in the surprisingly spacious garden, with a trampoline & football goal. When you can finally bear to part from the private beach, central Whitstable is just a five-minute drive away (or thirty minutes on foot). Just be sure to make it back home as the sun sets over Whitstable – it’s quite the show.

Located a minute's walk from Camber Sands, this family home is perfect for beach lovers looking for some respite. The contemporary design is clean and bright, with plenty of open-plan space for entertaining. The bi-fold doors keep the outside flowing into the home – great for summertime dining on the decked terrace. While the garden isn't the largest, there's enough room for a barbecue with the family, and the outdoor shower is a welcome addition for keen sea swimmers. If you're looking to explore further afield, the independent shops and restaurants of Rye are just a five-minute drive away.

This contemporary home is designed with entertaining in mind – with plenty of open-plan communal spaces. We love the cinema room, complete with a sofa big enough for all the family to get cosy. Socialising continues outdoors – equipped with a bar, barbecue, and pizza oven – the terrace is definitely the place to be. The garden comes with direct access to the sandy coastline via the dunes, so you'll have exclusive access to the quiet part of the beach – what's not to love?

Have you ever had a bath under the watchful eye of an albino lioness? Well, us neither, but that's about to change because we can't wait to book a stay at this outlandish beachside home. Once inside you'll find it hard to believe this was once a 19th-century fisherman's cottage - the owners have done an extraordinary job transforming in into an East London-style design palace with statement House of Hackney-style wallpaper, taxidermy animals, sculptural lighting and artwork that you'd expect to see in the Saatchi Gallery (we're talking Tracy Emin and Peter Blake originals). But for all the provocative design choices, this home is wonderfully liveable - style has certainly not been prioritised over comfort. In the bedrooms, King-sized beds are perfected with exceptional Egyptian cotton bedding. In the living room, we loved the butter softness of the velvet sofas - they're an absolute dream to relax on. And that zinc bathtub next to the lioness guarantees the most luxurious - and memorable - soak of your life. With so much going on inside it's easy to forget that this home has an unrivalled location right on the beach at Kingsdown (the sea views from the master bedroom are divine), but for an unforgettable beach escape, this dramatic home is impossible to beat.

This quirky home is full of charm and fascinating architectural design. A salvaged Victorian railway carriage has been incorporated into the design of the home, which boasts retro and urban styling – you’d never guess from the simple white cottage exterior. There’s a pool table and a wood-burning stove for cosy nights in, but most of your stay here will likely be spent exploring the shingle beach just a few steps away, or admiring sea views and the dramatic backdrop of the power station on Dungeness beach. This area is a great choice for wildlife enthusiasts – don’t forget to bring your binoculars.

Two of the things that the Kent town of Deal is most famous for is its castle and stretch of pebbly coastline. As it happens, both of these things are visible through the big bay window in the lounge of this apartment. Back inside, the decor is simple, but every aspect has been executed so well. Wooden floorboards and white walls provide a classy backdrop against which colourful furnishings and photographic artwork pop off. The kitchen is pretty large considering the address is only for two, so you'll be able to flex your culinary muscles with no trouble. The presence of a bathtub is also sure to be appreciated after a long day frolicking about on the beach, which sits at the end of the street. There are plenty of pubs and restaurants within walking distance, too.
