The owners have spent a year carefully renovating this home, maintaining the classic stonework outside, and creating a sophisticated space filled with colour inside. A wood-burning stove tucked into the original stone wall of the living room adds a touch of cottage cosiness, while midnight blue wall panelling and an aquamarine sofa are solidly 21st-century. The clash of eras continues in the custom-made kitchen where dark blue cupboards filled with sleek black crockery sit against lime-green walls, and the wooden beams of the low ceiling wouldn’t be out of place in an 18th-century country kitchen. Out the back door, a decked, courtyard-style garden is the perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink as stings of lights twinkle above. It’s just a few steps to Stamford High Street, where there are plenty of shops, cafés and delis to choose from.

Secret doors and treasures galore, this Grade II listed home in a quiet part of Long Bennington village is steeped in history and culture. A visual feast – you’ll find carved furniture from Africa, a Rajasthani chest, a coffee table from China, and red and gold chairs from Spain. It’s no wonder your hosts are both artists who love to travel. We could spend hours here just admiring the precious antiques around the home – including an intricately carved screen brought back by explorer Sir Francis Younghusband after he led the British Army into Tibet. More is more here with curiosities in every corner, but there’s plenty of space to relax too. Unwind in the foliage-filled conservatory, lie on the sofa in the living room where a traditional Persian rug pops against a terracotta floor, or take a walk amidst the daffodils in the garden outside. If you can ever peel yourself away from this magical gem, Newark historic market town – known for its indie shops, antiques and old buildings – is only a fifteen-minute drive from your door. One thing’s for sure, this spot will satisfy the soul.

This historic Grade I home has a more dramatic past than its tranquil setting suggests – it was used by Oliver Cromwell as a garrison during the civil war. Its loving restoration ensures that the rich history, which begins even earlier than the 17th Century, is keenly felt, as 700-year-old beams abound and paintings dating from the 17th to 19th centuries adorn the walls. We love the cute animal prints and pastel colours in the kid’s bedroom and the cosy fireside set up in the living room. With three bedrooms, this would make a great retreat for a multi-generational getaway.

There are a handful of village pubs within fifteen minutes’ drive and the bigger town of Horncastle is a ten-minute drive away for the big shop. Inside, its higglety-pigglety layout of wood beams and old barn stairs leading up to the hayloft turned “snug” – the ideal spot to work remotely. Embrace the bucolic surroundings with a family board game night or stick on a DVD from the collection and enjoy the open living area.

From here, it’s just seven miles to historic Stamford, while Tallington Lakes and Grimsthorpe Castle are also within easy reach.

A dash of magic has been liberally sprinkled over the traditional interior of this charming cottage and we’re big fans. The living room is cosy as you like, with a squashy pair of teal chesterfield sofas, an open fire and gilt-framed pictures. Upstairs, the bedrooms have a sumptuous boutique feel (we loved the luscious leafy look in one of them) and rural views that invite total relaxation. The unique dining nook is adorned with sheepskins, a chandelier made of antlers and characterful wallpaper depicting country scenes, making it a space fit for a (smallish) party of lords and ladies. The setting is rather lovely too, in a pretty Lincolnshire hamlet, with open countryside all around. Outside there’s a beautiful garden with a pergola and dining areas for those dusky summer evenings. Nearby Harlaxton, a five-minute drive away, is ideal for stocking up on basic supplies, as well as providing a slice of history with Harlaxton Manor. Drive a little further to take a stroll down Grantham Canal for gorgeous waterside views or explore the pale limestone streets of Stamford. Depending on the season, evenings are either about a glass of something cold in the garden, or a warming red in front of the fire – whichever way, it’s a delight.

The décor is on the right side of quirky – not too minimalist, not too over-filled with antiques – and freshly cut flowers and vibrant textiles add dashes of colour. Over in the farmhouse kitchen, there’s a mighty range oven to cook up a feast. Or treat yourself to a gourmet farmhouse breakfast or afternoon tea, delivered straight to your door.

On long summer evenings, keep the night flowing in the walled garden beside the firepit. And on wintery nights, draw the curtains and hunker down for board games by candlelight. With wood stacked by the log burner, you may have no desire to venture out. But should you fancy a change of scene, South Ferriby's award-winning pub (a thirteen-minute drive) is an evening well spent.
