This family home is all substance and style in a trendy western suburb of London. First of all, we love the book-filled living room with ming vases and object d’art adding a personal feel to the forest-green dresser. Big windows bathe this place in natural light. There’s a desk in here (and another in the second bedroom) for those that need to work remotely, and a collection of wines on display for a post-work wind-down. 

A wall of glass doors leads to the private patio garden, where a built-in stone barbecue can provide the perfect alfresco feast. Beautifully-appointed, this south-facing house provides a lovely sun spot for those wishing to sit out and unwind long into the balmy summer evenings. Pot plants burst with bloom and a wall of greenery offers some privacy. Back inside, the dine-in kitchen is bright and sunny and the master bathroom has a roll-top tub for a soak at the end of the day.

In terms of neighbourhood, you’re in leafy-green Chiswick – an affluent area with a friendly village-like feel, offering elegant eateries and a whole plethora of classy cafés and designer boutiques along the High Road. A fifteen-minute walk across the Kew Bridge sees you at the sprawling botanic gardens, while you can join the Thames River Path for a traffic-free stroll or cycle in just five minutes (your host kindly provides two bicycles for guest use). Hop on the Tube at Kew Bridge, a five-minute walk away, and be in the centre of London in around fifteen minutes.

Locally, it’s a five-minute walk to the river or eight minutes on foot to Kew Gardens, where you’ll also find the nearest tube station for jaunts further afield.

Chiswick might not be right in the city centre, but it doesn’t mean that its offering of arts and culture is diminished in any way. This flat is about a twenty-minute stroll from Chiswick House and Gardens, the same to William Hogarth’s former home, and less than ten to the independent Chiswick Cinema. And in this creative neighbourhood, it would only be right for the home itself to look the part.

As soon as you arrive, it’s quite clear that the house has style. A Victorian-style, monochrome tiled path leads to the front door, where red bricks and stained glass create a quintessentially London look. However, far from the traditional vibe you might expect, the interiors are wonderfully modern. Rich wooden floors and an original iron fireplace might be the only historic features – funky trinkets, wicker chairs, and minimalist lampshades are among some of the 21st-century quirks.

But our favourite part has to be the huge extension. White, glossy, and illuminated by a skylight as well as enormous bi-folding doors, this kitchen and dining area sets the tone for modern-day city elegance. From here it only gets better. Step outside to a private dining patio, surrounded by leafy greens. Or wander up the gravel path of the garden to reach a secluded patio where you can sip gin into the early hours.

Yet it's still close to excellent restaurants, cosy gastropubs, green spaces and plenty of shopping, with Westfield London (fifteen-minute stroll), Kensington High Street (twenty-minute walk) and Holland Park (thirty minutes on foot) all just a stone's throw away. This bright apartment in a picturesque mansion is the perfect place to rest your feet and recharge after a long day exploring. The fully-stocked kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal, while the cosy living area has a comfortable sofa, Freeview channels and DVD player for chilled nights at home. There's also a desk if you need to do some remote working, though we'd probably get distracted watching the world pass by outside the window. But our favourite feature is the sumptuous rolltop bath. We can't think of a better way to end the day than with a glass of wine, a good book and a relaxing soak. Pure bliss.

The elegant grounds belonged to famed British architect Sir John Soane, and you can explore his grand Georgian manor which is now a beautiful gallery in the park. When you’re ready for a taste of the big smoke, stroll ten minutes to Ealing Broadway station and hop on the Central Line, which whizzes you into central London in twenty-four minutes. 

After a day of exploring the city, head home and run a bubble bath in the decadent marble bathroom, cosy up on the sofa for a movie, or simply relax on your balcony with a glass of wine, as the sun sets over this green and pleasant corner of London.

Remote workers can get down to business in the separate study, which has a sofa bed for guests five and six. Factor in the sun-kissed patio, balcony, and private parking, and it's no surprise it caught our eye.

It’s close to the Thames, Fulham, and Chelsea, and within easy reach of Putney Bridge tube station so seeing the rest of London is a breeze. The home is attractive and bright, with a stunning living and dining space overlooking the garden. We love the skylights and floor-to-ceiling glass doors – it’s especially striking in summer. There’s also a convenient home office for those working remotely during their stay.

It's not stuffed full of hi-tech entertainment and isn't super luxurious, but if you want a peaceful haven this is a proper gem. Perhaps the biggest highlight is the outdoor patio and gate leading onto the communal garden. Literally, nothing could be more classical Notting Hill.

There's something truly whimsical about this Fulham home which we love. For instance, not every place has a swan's head (with a crown no less) watching over proceedings. The absolute highlight here, though, is the pretty, sunny garden – the rattan sofa, surrounded by scented climbers, is the perfect spot for cocktails. Back through the Crittal style patio windows, you'll find a stylish kitchen with a dining area and, beyond that, an elegant living room with period character features such as a bay window. At the end of a busy day in London, we can't think of anything better than having a long luxurious soak in the silver freestanding bath.

If you crave more green space, go for a stroll around Eel Brook Common, within a fifteen-minute walk. We can imagine lazy Sunday afternoons snoozing on the sofa after a roast. Upstairs, you'll find a second sitting room, with a laptop-friendly workspace in case those emails can't wait. All three bedrooms are decorated in neutral grey tones that help you unwind after a busy day, though the third bedroom mixes things up with some fun printed wallpaper, plus there's plenty of storage space so you can unpack and feel truly at home. At the very top of the house, you'll find a rooftop terrace overlooking the neighbourhood. It's an excellent spot for sundowners at the end of a busy day. And if you prefer your pints on draught, there are a couple of great local pubs. Elsewhere, Ravenscourt Park and the River Thames are close by, while the vast Westfield shopping centre takes care of your shopping needs. There isn't much need to venture into Central, but if you'd like to catch a show, then you're just over half an hour from London's glittering West End on the Piccadilly Line.
