Theatres, restaurants, and shops are on your doorstep at this apartment in Covent Garden. You couldn't ask for a more central base. It's easy to explore all London has to offer here, whether on foot or by the city's excellent public transportation. Inside, it's bright and contemporary. The rooms are comfortable, the kitchen is well-equipped, and the en-suite bathroom has a freestanding bath for long, relaxing soaks. It can be a little noisy, but that's to be expected in such an exciting area.

Central and convenient, this top-floor apartment is just a stone's throw from Oxford Circus. If sightseeing is on the agenda, you can walk to the British Museum, West End, and Covent Garden, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby, too. The building doesn't have a lift, so expect to climb stairs, but the apartment is perfectly formed for couples or small groups. Pocket-sized, it may be, it has all you need to unwind comfortably. Just note that though a third guest could sleep on a sofa bed, we think it's better for two.

This home stands proudly above adjacent buildings and casts an imposing shadow on the street below, famous for its upmarket gentlemen's outfitters – with your downstairs neighbour being a traditional shoe shop. The whole area has a classy and traditional London vibe, so upon entering this grand building, you might be surprised by the interiors of the flat. Sleek white fixtures and fittings, monochrome photography prints, honey-coloured flooring, and a neutral colour palette are a welcome contrast to the buzz of nearby Piccadilly. Sip an Earl Grey on the balcony as you look out over the city centre from your vantage point. The plush bedrooms also feature French doors or large windows with views – it’s a city that deserves to be seen. You should be able to spot St James's Church at Piccadilly, right across the street. As it’s well known for its classical music programme, why not stop in for a lunchtime concert? Then on to St James’s Square, where you can unwind in elegant and peaceful formal gardens. For the evening, the glitzy restaurants of Mayfair are calling. You won’t even need to hail a black cab, as it’s only a ten-minute walk away.

We'd be won over by this well-proportioned luxury flat regardless of the location, but the fact that it's in a converted period building in central London is mighty impressive. Upon entrance, guests will be greeted by an open space illuminated by tall windows on the far wall and pretty chandeliers. At the far end lies a gorgeous kitchen complete with quartz surface tops and Miele appliances. The large bedrooms both have plenty of storage space and a workspace, but it's the bathrooms that take your breath away with their frameless glass and suave grey tiling. Step out the front door and Lincoln's Inn Fields stands before you — here, there's a small square to wander about, tennis courts to book out and the inimitable Sir John Soane's Museum to look around. If a visit there gets you in the mood for more ancient artefacts, The British Museum is only ten minutes' walk up the road.

Not only is the famous market a few steps away, but the West End's theatres, Soho's cocktail bars, and plenty of shops and eateries are also within easy reach. Back home, you'll find a bright living room with a sofa bed, a duo of cosy bedrooms (our favourite is the main suite), and all the essentials needed for a fuss-free stay. In such a buzzing area, there may be some street noise, but we think that's a fair trade.

If you crave some greenery, then leafy Soho Square is a three-minute stroll, or have an evening at the theatre – Leicester Square is a ten-minute wander, while Covent Garden is twelve minutes on foot. Housed in one of the area's most desirable apartment blocks, the converted warehouse facade of the building will make you feel like you're living on a film set. We were surprised by how peaceful this place is inside, considering it's located in one of london's most lively neighbourhoods. Sunlight streams into the stylish open-plan living space, thanks to the enormous windows. Enjoy some cosmopolitan cocktails at the steel island in the spacious kitchen, or relax with some candles and music in the bathtub before exploring all this fantastic district has to offer. It's no wonder this home has amazing reviews – we love it here.

In the centre of the West End, this home is a dream if you long to be in the heart of London. You won't want for distractions – more restaurants, bars, and theatres than you could hope to visit are seconds away. That's not to say you'll be in a rush to head out, though – the airy, open-plan living space offers plenty of natural light, letting you relax between trips into the bustling streets below. To top this off, your host can arrange extras, including spa treatments and event tickets. If you want to head out of the area, that's easy too – Picadilly Circus Tube Station is a few minutes' walk, while several bus stops are even closer.

There's a spacious minimalist kitchen and a chic glass dining table, but given the location and the countless restaurants that in the locale, we wouldn't be surprised if these remain unused. As well as plenty of places to eat, the main row of West End theatres on Shaftesbury Avenue sits at the top of the street, while Leicester Square and its cinemas are three minutes' walk in the other direction.

The home itself is beautifully decorated – it’s all sharp corners, sleek design, luxurious furnishings, and the odd jewel tone or pastel pop for a spot of colour and character. The owners have also filled the apartment with original art, lending the home a more personal touch that just can’t be replicated. Plus a dedicated concierge service means there’s no need to worry about anything during your stay here.

In the heart of London's literary neighbourhood lies this effortlessly stylish penthouse apartment on a mews street with plenty riding in its favour. Back inside, the colour palette rarely veers from whites and neutrals, which feels instantly calming upon entrance. The sleek bathrooms, in particular, wouldn't look out of place in a spa. In the locale, there is an eclectic choice of museums that can be reached in under fifteen minutes' walk, with subjects ranging from Charles Dickens and the postal system to the former house of Dr Samuel Johnson and the daddy of them all, the British Museum.

From this traditionally-minded yet well-maintained Mayfair apartment, there's a little taste of luxury in every direction. To your east is Liberty department store and there are further designer shopping options to your north on Bond Street. Head south and in two minutes, you could be on Savile Row, while wandering further west along these embassy-lined streets will get you to Grosvenor Square. However, despite this unbeatable location, we found this home to be extremely peaceful and a welcome refuge from the non-stop going-ons of Central London. The chic kitchen was a highlight here, with smart brass finishes contrasting nicely with honeycomb marble tiling, but let's not kid ourselves — with this many renowned restaurants only a short stroll away, don't be surprised if this home's oven remains undisturbed during the duration of your stay.

Wind down in the evening at Duck Soup for a glass of natural wine and your pick of the seasonal menu. As night falls, wander through the buzzy streets back to your novelist’s hideout.

Hot off the press, this apartment is a short stroll from Fleet Street. The Strand, the River Thames, the Royal Courts of Justice and the London School of Economics, along with the Tate Modern and the British Museum, are within walking distance too. Such an excellent location will mean this home will be subject to some city noise, but that's to be expected. Once a place for textile dying in the 15th century, this newly refurbished apartment, with a private lift, sits within an exclusive Victorian development. There's plenty of room for entertaining in the spacious open-plan living space, and if you need to work from home, the large dining table doubles up as a laptop workspace.

Modern portraits have been hung up on the exposed stonework, while somebody with an eye for design has clearly had a hand in the thoughtful interplay of textures, from the velvet sofa to the hard wooden floors. The concrete-grey kitchen has everything you need for self-catering, but there are award-winning restaurants, cute brunch spots and street food stalls galore in the surrounding Covent Garden. The impeccably central location of this home means that there are copious amounts of distractions within walkable distance — The British Museum takes seven minutes to reach, while in the other direction, Somerset House takes the same amount of time.

You couldn't ask for a better base for sightseeing – most of London's main attractions are a short walk or quick Tube ride away. That said, the star attraction is undoubtedly the terrace. The interior is decorated in a mid-century-meets-industrial style, with Crittall-style windows and doors, a minimalist kitchen and elegant furniture that's sure to appeal to the style-conscious. It's a theme that continues into the bedrooms, with exposed brick walls, ample built-in storage and an opulent en-suite attached to the master bedroom. One of the joys of Bloomsbury is that pretty much everything is within walking or cycling distance. There are plenty of hidden gems tucked away down backstreets and side alleys, too, including plenty of classic English pubs, cool coffee shops and a collection of lesser-known museums. Elsewhere, the nearby Brunswick Centre has an assortment of shops, an arthouse cinema and a Waitrose for stocking up on essentials. There's also plenty of green space nearby at Russell Square, Gray's Inn Gardens and Coram's Fields. Finally, the bars and restaurants of Clerkenwell and Exmouth Market are within a ten-minute walk, while Covent Garden and Soho are slightly further afield. If you don't fancy walking, or the weather isn't playing ball, Chancery Lane and Farringdon stations are around ten minutes from your front door.
