With only six miles separating you from the seaside town of Whitby, you can easily take a quick road trip to spend the day on the sandy shores of West Cliff beach. While this home sits between rural villages like Castleton and Danby, a half-hour or so in the car will take you to the shores of Whitby. After a day of bracing sea air and a portion of fish and chips, heading back to your country abode feels a world away from this colourful seaside town.

While fish might be on the menu at the coast, this home has a history of pork. A former pigsty, this rustic building sets the tone for an elegant and modern stay – quite the renovation. From the outside, its terracotta roof and honey-coloured stonework certainly give it a barn-like feel. With original stable-style doors and a large courtyard out front, you can imagine the livestock milling around in days gone by.

But as soon as you step inside, history is forgotten. Fresh and sophisticated, the living space is an inviting mix of soft fabrics, chunky timber beams, and understated furnishings, all in the glow of a fabulous log-burner. We love the bright white walls and apex ceilings, creating a fantastic sense of space. Another large space is the garden, where a patio awaits with a cute dining set and a barbecue – pork sausages anyone?

Just as the seemingly limitless panorama of sky and sea on North Yorkshire's coastline feels bright and invigorating, so too does the interior of this home found close to the River Esk. In the open kitchen-living area, a glass roof and large windows on either side fill the space with natural light, which is accentuated by the reflective surfaces on the minimalist kitchen and the stark white walls. In one of the bedrooms, there's even a Juliet balcony that looks out to a peaceful field and distant rooftops. Throughout the rest of the house, there are plenty of contemporary design touches that have us nodding our heads in approval, from the mid-century furnishings in the living room and the elegant freestanding bathtubs to the patterned floor tiling in the hallway. The local neighbourhood has a residential feel, but all of Whitby's attractions sit within walkable distance. The town's beach, for instance, takes twenty minutes to reach on foot, while the gothic Abbey is only a quarter of an hour away.

A dining table with zesty yellow chairs takes centre stage – come together for a home-cooked breakfast and hot cups of tea before throwing on your sun hat and heading to the seaside. You’re a ten-minute walk from the beach – fifteen if you stop for an ice cream. Cross the River Esk and climb the 199 steps to reach the famous Abbey. With all of that exploring, you’ll have worked up quite an appetite, so pick up a fish supper from an award-winning chip shop and enjoy overlooking the harbour.

From here, you can follow the sand (tides permitting) to the centre of Whitby in just under an hour, scanning for fossils and paddling in the sea as you go. A cosy living room sits on the first floor with a wooden plank wall and forest green decor a reminder of your rural surrounds. Also upstairs, the kitchen is a delight to cook in with everything you need for self-catering. From up here, you get great views of the estate, out over the hay meadow. Come bedtime, toddle downstairs to plush double bedrooms and perhaps drift off to the hoot of a passing barn owl.
