Although they were all the rage a couple of centuries ago, you don't tend to see many orangeries around these days, especially not at private residences. The fact that there's one on the grounds of this stone home in the sleepy village of Alwinton is a welcome novelty in our books. 

Step inside and you'll find everything from a wood-burner and a dining table to a telescope with which to gaze up at the night sky – given that the home sits within a designated Dark Sky Park, there's plenty to look out for.

We're happy to say that there's a whole lot to like inside the main house, too. The design has a traditional feel with lounges filled with antique furnishings sitting alongside wood-burning stoves, a shaker-style kitchen complete with an oil-fired range cooker, and upstairs, a copper bathtub next to a window with a view of the garden.

The address lies within the Northumberland National Park, so you can be assured of  walking routes, historic attractions and quaint villages with which to fill your afternoons. We should also probably mention that there's a renowned pub all of a minute's walk from the front door, too.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. The stylish, light-grey kitchen is understated and modern. But we love the traditional countryside features such as flagstone flooring and a sandstone, inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove. You feel like you've gone back in time when you’re stoking the flames with the cast-iron tools, and adding fresh logs from the wicker basket. And there’s plenty of history to discover outside the home too – take a thirty-five-minute walk to the 2000-year-old Chesters Roman Fort and Museum on Hadrian’s Wall.

Looking for luxury? This apartment in the coastal town of Tynemouth is the picture of lavish elegance. With so much room, you won't believe this whole apartment is just for the two of you. Not only is the home decorated beautifully, but it's also in the heart of the town, just a short walk away from the sandy beach. 

The living room has the feel of a grand hall – statue busts, twinkling chandeliers, prestigious artwork, and a rich mahogany dining table exude opulence. Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. In the evenings, forgo the home-cooking for a pint, delicious pub grub and live music at one of the cosy inns in town.

This rather serious-looking stone building in the centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed was built back in the middle of the nineteenth century and used to be a school. Today, however, it has been completely renovated to the point where you would have no idea that these were once classrooms. In the main living-come-dining area, big windows look out into the garden and the estuary in the distance, as well as bathing the space in natural light. A bio-ethanol fireplace sits at one side of the room and provides a more eco-friendly way of warming up cold hands. When the weather's more agreeable, the home has some private outdoor space, as well as access to a shared courtyard that backs onto the old town walls. The town's pier and lighthouse can be reached in less than fifteen minutes' walk, as can the beach. You can also cross over the Scottish Border in around ten minutes by car, too.

British coastal hideaways don't come much more sophisticated than this, folks. And locations don't get much better, either. Set in the quintessential seaside town of Seahouses, its setting is bang-on. Take a mosey into the centre (a mere 0.8 mile walk away) for a dose of British seaside nostalgia with fish and chips at the beach followed by a beachcombing amble. Treat the family to a game of crazy golf or rock pooling. Or hop on a boat trip and journey to Farne Islands – it's Attenborough's favourite place, don't you know.

Back home, the Scandi-inspired interiors of this chic home feel like a dose of fresh sea air after busy days on the beach. Marble accents and butter-soft leather armchairs add a dash of luxury, while abstract sea-inspired prints subtly remind us the sea is never far away. Over in the light-filled bedrooms, there are impeccably finished en suite shower rooms for a little added privacy. And the icing on the cake? A suntrap private terrace that's prime for lazy morning coffees with the papers, evening sundowners and anything else in between.

A perfect getaway for two, this cottage delivers on all fronts. It's bright and contemporary, but the vaulted ceilings and exposed beams add a rustic touch that suits the surrounding landscape. Inside, a light-filled living area opens onto a gorgeous patio. Sipping champagne as the sun goes down will become your evening ritual – keep an eye out for wild rabbits and rare birds flying overhead. The kitchen is on the smaller side, but it's well-stocked and well-suited to rustling up delicious breakfasts and other light meals. We also adore the sleigh bed – it's as comfortable as it looks, and nothing beats sinking into the plush sheets after a day of exploring. Speaking of exploring, you're only a five-minute drive from Alnwick, a charming market town with a famous castle. Roam the cobbled streets lined with independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, then head up to the castle for a history lesson or wander the gardens. Drive ten minutes in the opposite direction and you'll hit the Northumberland coast – both Boulmer and Alnmouth are great options if you fancy a day by the seaside.

Bamburgh’s location on the Northumberland Coast makes it splendid for a trip out on the water, just as much as fish and chips on the shore. Between the dunes and the green perimeter of this tiny town, your house sits pretty at just over half a mile from Bamburgh Beach and its famed castle. But if you choose sea over the land, you’ll be well looked after – this town is home of Victorian maritime heroine Grace Darling.

While this fabulous holiday home is certainly on land, there are still nods to the coast. Grey wooden slats on the exterior are reminiscent of a traditional wooden rowboat, while the front door even features a perfectly round porthole. You can admire it from the outside while sitting on your patio with a chilled bottle of fizz, or on the lush lawn surrounded by a picnic and a few G&Ts. You'll find this home amongst the rolling hills in the sleepy village of Redpath. This stone cottage is classic with contemporary touches – making it an ideal base for those exploring the area. Going slightly further afield, Northumbria National Park can be reached within thirty-minutes, and here you'll find beautiful walks amongst the lush countryside.

Upstairs, the main suite has oodles of room to relax. We love the balcony – the perfect spot to enjoy your coffee in the fresh air – as well as the freestanding bathtub, which beckons for relaxing soaks after a long walk through the country. And even better, guests will have access to the two hot tubs on-site – ideal for bubbling away under the starry night skies.

Make sure to pack your walking shoes as this section of Northumberland is rife for rambling. A ten-minute drive away lies Belsay Hall, Castle & Gardens, while waterfront pubs along the River Tyne are about a twenty-minute drive. But if you'd like to pick up the pace, Newscastle is reachable in thirty minutes by car –  an excellent option for day trips.

After adventures spent exploring the five villages of the Seaton Valley, unwinding is a breeze as the home is equipped with access to Netflix, a large bathtub and everything you'll need in the kitchen to whip up heart homemade meals when spending cosy evenings at home. Alternatively, the local village is home to a few local pubs – ideal for meals out or a nightcap.

With views of the castle and the historic quarter right on its doorstep, it’s safe to say this home has one of the best locations in the market town of Alnwick. Explore its wander-worthy cobbled streets lined with independent shops, cafes, pubs, and restaurants. Or escape the bustle with a walk around the vast twelve acres of Alnwick’s Garden, just a five-minute stroll from your door. Make sure to seek out the world’s largest treehouse restaurant and the cascade of 21 separate waterfalls - it’s quite something.

Back home, this stylish townhouse dating back to the 1800s makes quite the first impression. Set out over three floors, exposed brick walls and traditional beams show the bones of its historical past while everywhere else has been beautifully reimagined into a luxurious holiday retreat. Upside down in layout, the bedrooms are downstairs, saving those castle views on the top floor for the impressive living space. Whip up a meal in the striking blue, modern kitchen while others spill out to the dining table and break out the games. Or crash out by the fire on the squishy modular sofas. Those charming castle views will be right there wherever you choose to be.

Nestled into the village of Belford, you’ll be surrounded by rural farms and beautiful hills, perfect for idyllic walks. In fact, staying here means getting the best of both worlds as you are neatly tucked away between the Northumberland coastline and the beautiful wilderness of Northumberland National Park. Spend your days going for long country or coastal walks, visit the nearby town of Bamburgh for its famous castle, or simply sit back in front of the wood-burning stove, read a book and enjoy each other’s company. Weather permitting, we also highly recommend spending some time in the private decking area. Wake up and enjoy your coffee in the morning sun, for example, or end the day with a glass of wine after being out and about all day.

Dorian Grey Cottage

Dating back to 1823, this beautifully renovated fisherman’s cottage is the perfect base for exploring the rugged Northumberland Coast. Craster’s working harbour is pretty much at your front door, and most of the rooms have spectacular views across the sea and the charming village. Follow your nose to the local smokehouse and taste their famous kippers (reputedly a favourite of the Royal Family), explore the magnificent Dunstanburgh Castle, or just sit and watch the fishing boats lazily bobbing on the harbour. The Northumberland Coastal Path is easily accessed from the south of the village, for sweeping panoramas and secret beaches. Come back to your pretty cottage to watch the sun set from the terrace, where outdoor dining is set up. Snuggle down in front of the wood-burning stove, set in the original stone wall of the cottage lounge. Rustle up a meal in the cosy nook of a kitchen or head out to dine on fresh seafood. 

Sea Shanty

This charming building dates back to 1894, when it was built as part of Hexham Abbey. It was still being used as a place of worship until 2003, and then stood empty until its current owners gave it a new lease of life as a luxury holiday home. You'll find plenty of echoes of the past here, from the original brickwork on the exterior, to the wooden beams and impressive vaulted ceiling in the master bedroom. However, this home is firmly part of the present, and its recent restoration means that the interiors are classic yet contemporary. Curl up beside the wood-burning stove for a toasty night in, or run yourself a decadent bubble bath – the free-standing tub is a real gem. There's also an outdoor hot tub with fantastic views over the countryside, where you can soak to your heart's content. Walkers will be glad that both Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines are within a short drive of your front door. The market town of Hexham is only a five-minute car ride away, where you'll find quaint pubs, a weekly farmers' market and the historic abbey, one of the earliest seats of Christianity in England. And, when you return home, don't forget to do some stargazing – your hosts have even provided a telescope.

Lying just around the corner from Seahouses Harbour, the stone facade of this home looks like it's been a fixture here for years, but it's a fairly recent addition. This becomes abundantly clear as you glance around the contemporarily styled interior for the first time.

Inside, two cosy lounges offer space for both grown-ups and youngsters to unwind – one even has a collection of board games, DVDs, and an XBOX 360 for rainy days. Head outside and you'll find a sunny garden overlooking the Cheviot Hills – perfect for pups and kids to let loose.
