Situated in a Grade II-listed building dating back to 1878, we can't help but swoon over this Alnwick apartment. It doesn't lack character, that's for sure – vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and antique knick-knacks like typewriters and old books are in abundance. We think it's the perfect blend of old and new, and nowhere is a better example of that than the open-plan living area. Bright and roomy, there's more than enough space here to spread out and get comfortable, whether you're tucking into a feast around the table or snuggling up in front of the fire. Cooking is anything but a chore in the glossy kitchen, and on rainy days, head up to the mezzanine for board games and billiards. There's also a communal garden for the summer months, where you can sip tea in the sunshine or cocktails at twilight.

And the location is excellent, too. Alnwick is as charming as they come, sprinkled with history and magic – no wonder they filmed Harry Potter here. Spend afternoons wandering down the cobbled lanes, popping in and out of the independent shops, cafes and bookstores that line the high street. The famous Alnwick Castle is just a short walk away, while the Northumberland coast is a thirteen-minute drive. In the evenings, forgo the home-cooking for a pint, delicious pub grub and live music at one of the cosy inns in town.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. The stylish, light-grey kitchen is understated and modern. But we love the traditional countryside features such as flagstone flooring and a sandstone, inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove. A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

Not only is the home decorated beautifully, but it's also in the heart of the town, just a short walk away from the sandy beach.

Although they were all the rage a couple of centuries ago, you don't tend to see many orangeries around these days, especially not at private residences. The fact that there's one on the grounds of this stone home in the sleepy village of Alwinton is a welcome novelty in our books. 

Step inside and you'll find everything from a wood-burner and a dining table to a telescope with which to gaze up at the night sky – given that the home sits within a designated Dark Sky Park, there's plenty to look out for.

We're happy to say that there's a whole lot to like inside the main house, too. The design has a traditional feel with lounges filled with antique furnishings sitting alongside wood-burning stoves, a shaker-style kitchen complete with an oil-fired range cooker, and upstairs, a copper bathtub next to a window with a view of the garden.

The address lies within the Northumberland National Park, so you can be assured of  walking routes, historic attractions and quaint villages with which to fill your afternoons. We should also probably mention that there's a renowned pub all of a minute's walk from the front door, too.

Situated in the sunny seaside town of Seahouses, this bright, family-size home is just a ten-minute stroll from the charming harbour and shimmering sea, setting up a relaxing, stress-free stay for all. And when you're not rock pooling or crazy golfing with the family, hop on a boat and head to the Farne Islands, known for its incredible wildlife, just a couple of miles off the coast. 

Kick back in your homey, light-filled living room when it's time to unwind. Sink into the cream sofas in front of the fireplace, as you feel the abundant sunlight illuminate the cosy lounge. We love the muted tones and pastel green colour palette that creates a calming place to call home. Cook up a hearty meal in the modern kitchen to be enjoyed at the wooden dining table, or better still, fire up the barbecue outside for an alfresco dinner together in the enclosed garden. We can think of no better way to bookmark a lovely day by the sea.

Perched upon the Whitley coast lies this comfortable modern home. Large windows allow natural daylight to permeate the house during the day, so you can wake up to scenic views right from the bedrooms, and open the window to let in the smell of the sea. Sit out on the patio in the garden and enjoy drinks and good company as the sun sets or curl up on the sofa in the living room and get lost in a good book.

You'll find plenty to do in Whitley Bay, including the two miles of golden sandy beaches, where you'll enjoy some incredible vistas from the St Mary's Island lighthouse. If you're hoping to find some great places to eat out during your trip, you’re in luck – Spanish City plays host to a Renaissance-style hall complete with a fish and chip restaurant, a bar and a traditional tearoom. What’s more, this abode is in close proximity to public transport, so you'll be able to hop on a bus to the city centre for some retail therapy.

Within an hours' drive of Edinburgh, this countryside cottage in the Scottish Borders town of Greenlaw enjoys the best of both worlds. While you have the option to head to the city for the day, you can also stay put, enjoying moorland views and hill walks — Berwick-upon-Tweed and its coastline is only half an hour's drive away, too. The recently refurbished interior is a lovely place to return to after time spent out in the elements, with comfy furnishings positioned around the log burner sure to have you feeling warm and toasty again. Failing that, a long soak in the bathtub will do the trick. When the weather is favourable, you can take full advantage of the home's front garden surrounded by a stone wall, which has a pretty view of Scottish hillsides and a barbecue for those bursts of balmy weather.

Make the most of having your own personal watchtower where you can witness views of Budle Bay from different angles. We particularly adore the addition of a telescope, which will allow you to explore the distant scenery. Budle Bay has built a reputation as a bird sanctuary, so you might just spot birds like wildfowl and waders flying past. The home itself oozes a connection to the sea and the sandy bays that surround it – from the lush blues of the furnishings to the decorative touches.

Being located on the edge of historic Bamburgh, in the small village of Waren Mill, means you can enjoy long, quiet walks and energetic hikes through the countryside and along the coast here. A trip to Bamburgh Castle followed by a stroll along Bamburgh's sandy shores is a must. It takes five-minutes to drive here and you can easily while away hours marveling at the scenery. Drive ten minutes in the opposite direction and you'll hit the Northumberland coast – both Boulmer and Alnmouth are great options if you fancy a day by the seaside.
