Although they were all the rage a couple of centuries ago, you don't tend to see many orangeries around these days, especially not at private residences. The fact that there's one on the grounds of this stone home in the sleepy village of Alwinton is a welcome novelty in our books. 

Step inside and you'll find everything from a wood-burner and a dining table to a telescope with which to gaze up at the night sky – given that the home sits within a designated Dark Sky Park, there's plenty to look out for.

We're happy to say that there's a whole lot to like inside the main house, too. The design has a traditional feel with lounges filled with antique furnishings sitting alongside wood-burning stoves, a shaker-style kitchen complete with an oil-fired range cooker, and upstairs, a copper bathtub next to a window with a view of the garden.

The address lies within the Northumberland National Park, so you can be assured of  walking routes, historic attractions and quaint villages with which to fill your afternoons. We should also probably mention that there's a renowned pub all of a minute's walk from the front door, too.

Dating back to 1823, this beautifully renovated fisherman’s cottage is the perfect base for exploring the rugged Northumberland Coast. Craster’s working harbour is pretty much at your front door, and most of the rooms have spectacular views across the sea and the charming village. Follow your nose to the local smokehouse and taste their famous kippers (reputedly a favourite of the Royal Family), explore the magnificent Dunstanburgh Castle, or just sit and watch the fishing boats lazily bobbing on the harbour. The Northumberland Coastal Path is easily accessed from the south of the village, for sweeping panoramas and secret beaches. Come back to your pretty cottage to watch the sun set from the terrace, where outdoor dining is set up. Snuggle down in front of the wood-burning stove, set in the original stone wall of the cottage lounge. Rustle up a meal in the cosy nook of a kitchen or head out to dine on fresh seafood.

A truly stunning rural retreat, this home is sat on a hill overlooking the beautiful South Tyne Valley – just five minutes from Hadrian's Wall. Away from it all, yet within walking distance of the village pub, this place really has to be one of our favourites in this neck of the woods. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Or on a chilly evening, it’s even better for stargazing with a hot toddy in hand. Inside, the living space is a welcoming mix of old and new. The stylish, light-grey kitchen is understated and modern. But we love the traditional countryside features such as flagstone flooring and a sandstone, inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove. You feel like you've gone back in time when you’re stoking the flames with the cast-iron tools, and adding fresh logs from the wicker basket. And there’s plenty of history to discover outside the home too – take a thirty-five-minute walk to the 2000-year-old Chesters Roman Fort and Museum on Hadrian’s Wall.

This former lifeboat house has a pioneering history – it owns the impressive title of being the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. And while it may no longer be used for life-saving missions, the owners have since restored it into a private seaside sanctuary – the perfect setting to relax and enjoy the adventurous spirit of the Northumberland coastline. 

Featuring a large enclosed garden with direct access to the beach alongside a range of personal touches, you’ll find everything you could need to settle in and make this space your own. From the large living room and snug bedrooms to the fully-equipped kitchen, there’s a wonderful sense of warmth and comfort throughout this home. Large windows allow natural daylight to permeate the house during the day, so you can wake up to scenic views right from the bedrooms, and open the window to let in the smell of the sea. You'll find plenty to do in Whitley Bay, including the two miles of golden sandy beaches, where you'll enjoy some incredible vistas from the St Mary's Island lighthouse. If you're hoping to find some great places to eat out during your trip, you’re in luck – Spanish City plays host to a Renaissance-style hall complete with a fish and chip restaurant, a bar and a traditional tearoom. What’s more, this abode is in close proximity to public transport, so you'll be able to hop on a bus to the city centre for some retail therapy.

Within an hours' drive of Edinburgh, this countryside cottage in the Scottish Borders town of Greenlaw enjoys the best of both worlds. While you have the option to head to the city for the day, you can also stay put, enjoying moorland views and hill walks — Berwick-upon-Tweed and its coastline is only half an hour's drive away, too. The recently refurbished interior is a lovely place to return to after time spent out in the elements, with comfy furnishings positioned around the log burner sure to have you feeling warm and toasty again. Hidden away on a lovely farm estate, this stunning stone cottage offers all the charm of a country retreat combined with the convenience of all the mod cons. On cool nights, cosy up by the wood-burning stove and play board games by firelight or stream your favourite films as you sink into the sofa. The patio area of the private walled garden is the perfect place to sip coffee out of the wind in the morning and glasses of wine in the afternoon when the sun emerges from behind the building and warms the stones. Of course, you could spend all day wandering the moors around the home, and the coast is only a short drive away. Alternatively, you could drive thirty minutes to Whiteadder Watersports Centre for sailing, kayaking and SUP sessions, or visit the timeless city of Edinburgh, a forty-mile drive away.

This rather serious-looking stone building in the centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed was built back in the middle of the nineteenth century and used to be a school. Today, however, it has been completely renovated to the point where you would have no idea that these were once classrooms. In the main living-come-dining area, big windows look out into the garden and the estuary in the distance, as well as bathing the space in natural light. A bio-ethanol fireplace sits at one side of the room and provides a more eco-friendly way of warming up cold hands. When the weather's more agreeable, the home has some private outdoor space, as well as access to a shared courtyard that backs onto the old town walls. The town's pier and lighthouse can be reached in less than fifteen minutes' walk, as can the beach. You can also cross over the Scottish Border in around ten minutes by car, too.
