Although they were all the rage a couple of centuries ago, you don't tend to see many orangeries around these days, especially not at private residences. The fact that there's one on the grounds of this stone home in the sleepy village of Alwinton is a welcome novelty in our books. 

Step inside and you'll find everything from a wood-burner and a dining table to a telescope with which to gaze up at the night sky – given that the home sits within a designated Dark Sky Park, there's plenty to look out for.

We're happy to say that there's a whole lot to like inside the main house, too. The design has a traditional feel with lounges filled with antique furnishings sitting alongside wood-burning stoves, a shaker-style kitchen complete with an oil-fired range cooker, and upstairs, a copper bathtub next to a window with a view of the garden.

The address lies within the Northumberland National Park, so you can be assured of  walking routes, historic attractions and quaint villages with which to fill your afternoons. We should also probably mention that there's a renowned pub all of a minute's walk from the front door, too.

You'll find this home amongst the rolling hills in the sleepy village of Redpath. This stone cottage is classic with contemporary touches – making it an ideal base for those exploring the area. Hidden away on a lovely farm estate, this stunning stone cottage offers all the charm of a country retreat combined with the convenience of all the mod cons. On cool nights, cosy up by the wood-burning stove and play board games by firelight or stream your favourite films as you sink into the sofa. The patio area of the private walled garden is the perfect place to sip coffee out of the wind in the morning and glasses of wine in the afternoon when the sun emerges from behind the building and warms the stones. Of course, you could spend all day wandering the moors around the home, and the coast is only a short drive away. Alternatively, you could drive thirty minutes to Whiteadder Watersports Centre for sailing, kayaking and SUP sessions, or visit the timeless city of Edinburgh, a forty-mile drive away.

Send the blues packing with a stay at this picturesque home at the tip of Bamburgh village. With pops of nautical blues and white wooden beams, this home perfectly fits its coastal location while maintaining the feel of a countryside cottage. The mix of modern and traditional features create a quintessential setting for any activity whether it be cosying up in the barbecue hut for an outdoor feast or inside for a formal dinner, enjoying a game of pool or sneaking away to read a good book on the sunny conservatory. 

The four lofty bedrooms feature plush carpet and sloped ceilings and there’s a warming log burner in the lounge for the dogs to doze off in front of. The garden is surrounded by leafy foliage, and although that might trick you into thinking that you’re miles inland, you’re actually only a few hundred yards from the sea. Go for a stroll along Budle Bay and you’ll find stretches of sandy beach and mudflats for a quiet morning of birdwatching. The impressive Bamburgh Castle is less than a five-minute drive away and is also home to a golf course with mighty impressive views overlooking the coast.

Dating back to 1823, this beautifully renovated fisherman’s cottage is the perfect base for exploring the rugged Northumberland Coast. Craster’s working harbour is pretty much at your front door, and most of the rooms have spectacular views across the sea and the charming village. Follow your nose to the local smokehouse and taste their famous kippers (reputedly a favourite of the Royal Family), explore the magnificent Dunstanburgh Castle, or just sit and watch the fishing boats lazily bobbing on the harbour. The Northumberland Coastal Path is easily accessed from the south of the village, for sweeping panoramas and secret beaches. Come back to your pretty cottage to watch the sun set from the terrace, where outdoor dining is set up. Snuggle down in front of the wood-burning stove, set in the original stone wall of the cottage lounge. Rustle up a meal in the cosy nook of a kitchen or head out to dine on fresh seafood.

Accents of racing green and antiqued brass bring flow and a dash of luxury throughout the space and guide you upstairs to an exquisite bedroom with a gleaming slipper bath at its heart. Part of an exclusive estate set within 1.5 acres of grounds, you could feel a million miles from anywhere here. But you're not as remote as you may think. The footpath from your door leads to the charming village of Talkin. Grab a shift pint and hearty meal in the village inn, or mosey down to The Boathouse Cafe for lunch al fresco overlooking the tarn. When it's time to embrace the great outdoors, hire a rowing boat, paddleboard, or kayak to launch off the tarn. Tee off from the local golf course - it overlooks the cottages. Then take a stroll around the 1.3-mile tarn through the mature woodland. Or, you could stay tucked up at home and soak up those views from the private patio or beside the fire – it's a scene you'll never tire of.

This rustic, 17th-century mill has been turned into a luxury nook in the Scottish Borders. You can see the old but still operating waterwheel, contrasted against the roses and flowering lavender on the old miller's house next door. A wood-burning stove sits are the heart of the home, keeping things cosy warm in winter (your host will leave detailed instructions on how to light it so you’ll become an expert). The classy, aubergine-purple kitchen is well stocked with artisan crockery and everything you need to cook up a holiday meal. The mill’s original mezzanine floor has been converted into a plush bedroom with a roll-top bath. Heading outside, you’ll find a small, private woodland garden with table and chairs. Exploring the rest of the old mill site you might spot owls and hedgehogs in the forest, heron and otters by the millpond and acquaint yourself with the friendly resident sheep. Heading into the small village of Lauder, three miles away, you’ll find a handful of craft shops, coffee shops and a local deli too.

When we say you’re footsteps from the beach here, we mean it. A stone staircase leads directly from this home to the soft sand of Smuggler’s Bay, so you’ve got beach days at your fingertips. Plus, you’re in the charming village of Beadnell, where there’s a convenience store, cosy pub and a bistro for a more formal dinner.

The home itself is like the beach houses of New England, with an atrium-style glass front showing off that direct sea view. The outdoors is set up to enjoy the sound of the waves with a hammock, outdoor dining and seating on the balcony too. There are two living areas to choose from inside – the light-filled lounge on the first floor leading to the balcony, or the leather seats in the open-plan living area downstairs. The dining area opens out onto the terrace and the kitchen has everything you need for self-catering. We love the decor inside, rich dark wood and blue to reflect your seaside locale.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic. Spend your days going for long country or coastal walks, visit the nearby town of Bamburgh for its famous castle, or simply sit back in front of the wood-burning stove, read a book and enjoy each other’s company. Weather permitting, we also highly recommend spending some time in the private decking area. Wake up and enjoy your coffee in the morning sun, for example, or end the day with a glass of wine after being out and about all day.

A perfect getaway for two, this cottage delivers on all fronts. It's bright and contemporary, but the vaulted ceilings and exposed beams add a rustic touch that suits the surrounding landscape. Inside, a light-filled living area opens onto a gorgeous patio. Sipping champagne as the sun goes down will become your evening ritual – keep an eye out for wild rabbits and rare birds flying overhead. The kitchen is on the smaller side, but it's well-stocked and well-suited to rustling up delicious breakfasts and other light meals. We also adore the sleigh bed – it's as comfortable as it looks, and nothing beats sinking into the plush sheets after a day of exploring. Speaking of exploring, you're only a five-minute drive from Alnwick, a charming market town with a famous castle. Drive ten minutes in the opposite direction and you'll hit the Northumberland coast – both Boulmer and Alnmouth are great options if you fancy a day by the seaside.
